The J-Music Lovers' International Assembly

I'm back from Japan and Korea!

Overall a terrific experience and managed to operate within the country decently despite my horrendously rudimentary Japanese. Did a lot of touristy stuff you'd expect from a tourist.

In terms of the J-pop side of things, I've engaged with it from various channels including hearing various forms of Japanese music depending on the area you're at, participating in karaoke and not managing to embarrass in front of locals when they pick their typical karaoke favourites. Of course, 9 concerts later I'm really grateful to have attended them. Every single one of them a great experience and markedly different in terms of fan-culture such as the fan choreography during a particular song are quite elaborate.

It's interesting to witness what you've been hearing about on the internet in terms ofwhat constitutes as popular in Japan. Let's just say there is an evident fragmentation of Jpop into two distinct markets; the one that caters to a dedicated fandom and another that appeals to the general public.

Dancing Hero by Oginome Yoko in particular was played very frequently in most of the places I've been.

Little cultural tid-bits like visiting an EXILE professional gym in Nagoya, the various ad-buses featuring whatever local act ,the local 48G theatres and visiting the gigantic Tower Records in Shibuya were highlights.

Will definitely go back for a second bout in the future.

^Haha, IKR?  I feel this would be OK if they were selling it as a mini album!

I'm looking forward to it as it's the first "new" DAI album I'm buying but was hoping it would be 14 tracks.

Especially when you consider when they released BRAND NEW DAYS 3 years ago it had 10 new songs.

The only thing that I'm looking forward to with this album is the live dvd since it has robot, d/n/a, and wadachi.

Kpop Twitter is so annoying though. They're still sending Cupcakke death threats. How lame and obsessive can you be?

Stuff like that makes me glad as hell that J-Music twitter is'nt that annoying, I can stan my japanese faves in peace and everything over on j-music twitter (if it exists).

-------

Kpop twitter fandom got a huge inflow of what i'd like to called the annoying stan twitter styled western stans it's no coincidence that modern day kpop twitter ifans act exactly like those people.

That Cupcakke thing was so shitty of those people to do. Those fangirls thing that their faves are theirs and baby the heck out of em and it's so annoying.

One of my biggest pet peeves is during awards seasons and there's fan votings involved. I get so annoyed every time I see Kpop fans tweeting and retweeting the same things, and begging the big accounts to RT their tweets for votes! God knows how many accounts I've muted or blocked because of that. Some of these people even make tons of socks just so they can RT votes, like, how much time do these people have in their hands? Don't they need to sleep? There are some Jpop fans on twitter who are like this too but they're more polite about it, like they'll tell you the time/period they'd RT stuff so that we can be prepared.

western kpop fandom is a beast that'll eat itself i swear to god. those fans ruined the whole genre and it has 1% with anything remotely related to music, 99% to do with very young, very entitled people who crave validation and the way kpop is built, with the many competitions and rankings and titles, it makes perfect for that. it's like Dota 2 but with vlives and without the peeing in monster cans (i'm ASSUMING)

tbh that's why i get so sour when certain kpop fandoms ride off of certain jpop groups. i'm being unfair of course because it's perfectly possible they all enjoy the music, but some of them are so ignorant (also not their fault) and i can't help but feel like they're using it as yet another measuring stick.

I don't like bandwagon Kpop fans either and sometimes the majority don't give 2 effs about JP/entertainment unless their faves are there.

*waste swathes* ROFL

Btw, Koreaboo writes about Sexy Zone's Sato Shori. Bandwagon or not? Or was it simply because SZ are in Fuller House? (Though the 'star' in the show is Marius, not Shori).

The song where Ayu first SNAPPED

So, so, so lush and its a song that I think sounds better with her more mature voice especially when she really tries to slay in the chorus after the guitar solo.

God, stan twitter is the absolute worst. I know with Kpop fans people always say it cause they're young, but it's been going on for years and some people never seem to grow out of it.

I think the most annoying thing is when people try to point to sales or YouTube views as a be all end all, but quality is so much more important than random figures. Just because something sells well or gets a lot of views doesn't mean it's good.

-----

I really can't wait for March to come. Yakuza 6 and Ni no Kuni II come out the same week and they have a high chance of being my games of the year

A big part of it is them being young. The KPop fans of 5 years ago are largely gone, replaced by another young group that will be gone in a few years, leading to the cycle repeating.

Agreed. Kpop is a revolving door where masses of fans come and leave in a moments notice hence the constant bragging and quarrels online. The high turnover rate of idol groups also plays a role.

Yes. Everything is new to them because they're pretty much always new.

I know a lot of them are young, but I've definitely seen some questionable 20 plus year old sticking around when new fans pop up.
