The album i was looking forward to for this month hasn't been uploaded yet and probably won't be. She doesn't seem well known and i only found her myself very recently

Huh.  Musically that's actually super interesting; certainly not a smooth song, but I kind of like just how all of those moving parts come together.  When she strains her voice a little her tone reminds me somewhat of Kuroki Nagisa, whose voice I'm actually quite fond of, so there's another point to chalk up.  Hrm.  Lemme do some digging around and see what I can't find.

Well, success, in a sense - I found her new album on Spotify, so if you want to hear it, there is a means:

oh nice! I have no idea how much japanese music is on spotify so i didn't think to check. Thanks~

It's the entire reason that I keep an account there, since there'll be moments like this where albums from smaller Japanese acts will show up on Spotify and nowhere else.  And no problem!

Well, time to see if there's anything I'll like this anime season.  *cracks knuckles*  Oh, and as an aside, the lyrics for BUMP OF CHICKEN's "Ribbon" are quite pretty and overall well put together.

Edit:  Hadn't realized, but happy page 1000!

Still two of my favorite artists to this very day.  I really love this track, and have for quite some time now.

This has been popping up in my YouTube suggestions a lot.

Mine as well.  Noticed a fair amount of songs from that era cropping up in my recommended videos lately, some old friends, others new to me.

People are saying he sounds like Bump of Chicken.

Do you agree?

I'd concur with whitedove on this one.  Bit of both BUMP OF CHICKEN and RAD in there, which is honestly not a bad sound to go for, but I imagine his next release will be somewhat different as they work to figure out what exactly suits him best.

Been so out of the J-pop loop lately. There hasn't been many releases that impressed me (except Suchmos' 808) so I feel like I'm a bit of a musical rut.

But in light the recent developments there some stuff I'd like to comment on:

1. Looking forward to Shiina Ringo's tribute album. The list of artists contributing is quite interesting and diverse, I'm particularly anticipating's Inoue Yosui's cover of carnation.

2. There's been talk about Kuu's new album being bleh as usual, so I'm not really leaping myself to go listen to it after consecutive disappointments from her past few albums.

3. Yonezu Kenshi is really taking off right now, I heard Peace Sign and Hanabi Uchiage played quite frequently when I was in Japan. He's incredibly popular with the youth (under 25) from my observation. Personally, he's a hit and miss artist but Lemon is quite promising.

4. Kyary is finally doing away with her shtick but she's lost all the momentum to register on Japanese' cultural consensus. I don't think anyone is expecting a huge comeback since it's incredibly hard to regain lost momentum once you lose it.

5. Still waiting on that Sakanaction studio album. Kageroh is lovely, and I guess it'll hold me over for a while.

What's the consensus on Gen's Doraemon? I like it, but it feels like a bit of a rehash of Koi.

To comment on "Doraemon" first, it honestly feels like it's a combination of Gen's previous two single songs ("Koi" and "Family Song"), which... to be frank, strikes me as rather lazy.  It's not bad, certainly, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a bit bored of his current sound.  Wouldn't surprise me if he's in a bit of a creative rut.

Conversely, I do like Yonezu Kenshi's "Lemon", albeit I still recognize some sounds I've heard from him before in the track.  There's just enough new to keep me interested though (plus, I'm a bit of a sucker for the solemn atmosphere that the song tries to cultivate).  Curious to see how the rest of the single holds up; that's where Gen really fell apart in my eyes, since aside from liking the choice of instruments on "Koko ni Inai Anata e", there wasn't much else I found interesting on the rest of that CD.

If you believe the press releases, Sakanaction's new studio album should be coming at the start of the spring festival season, so I'd guess sometime in May if they're going to stick to that.  We'll see.

To give a few recommendations for things that I've enjoyed thus far this year though, give Nothing's Carved In Stone's "

" (my favorite album so far), Ling Tosite Sigure's "#5", Ohashi Trio's "
", Schroeder-Headz' "HALSHURA", and goodbye holiday's "
" a try album-wise.  Haven't managed to track down AL's "
" yet, but based on the
, it also seems like it'll be a pretty worthwhile listen.  JUJU's "I" was an alright, if rather predictable record, and if you were looking for something a bit more old-school, Maeda Nobuteru's (TUBE's vocalist) "My Legends I" is probably up your alley.  In terms of stuff coming in the next couple of weeks (of which there's a ton), I'd personally recommend androp's "
", THE BACK HORN's "Joukei Dorobou", Saito Kazuyoshi's "Toys Blood Music", Sukima Switch's "Shinkuukan Algorithm", FLOWER FLOWER's "Spotlight", and Ame no Parade's "Reason of Black Color".

As far as individual songs go, I've found myself spinning Mr.Children's "

", Kuroki Nagisa's "Suna no Shiro", Yuzu's "
", Lamp's "
", PAELLAS' "
", and JYOCHO's "
".  Oh, and just came across arko lemming's "
" last night.  Other than those... would probably be listening to Quruli's "
" more frequently if it wasn't Youtube Red-blocked in the US, and have been returning to Fukuyama Masaharu's "
", which I kind of overlooked last year (my dissatisfaction with "Doraemon" sent me looking for other male soloist material).  Suppose there's also the new TRICERATOPS single that was just announced, "
", to look forward to.

Think that's a pretty comprehensive list of where I am musically right now!  Hope it leads you to some things that you like.

sakanaction and REOL are no longer region blocked on Youtube! Ohara Sakurako too. Who else is under Victor Entertainment, because I think they might have lifted it for everyone.

Just double-checked Southern All Stars and Ame no Parade and everything seems to be there.  Victor's finally on-board it seems.

On another note, need to put the new Mr.Children album on my listening backlog. Does anyone have commentary on it?

I can comment on it a bit (shockingly) if you'd like an idea of what you're getting into.  To give some context, I would say that this is probably their most guitar-forward album since 2000's "Q"; the band set is front and center in just about every song, though they haven't eschewed everything they've learned about arrangement in the years since.  Atmospherically, "Juuryoku to Kokyuu" is probably closer to "Versus" than "Q" or "DISCOVERY" though, as it's not as dark as either of the latter two can get at moments (especially "DISCOVERY").  However, that doesn't mean it lacks weight, since I think there is a very distinct narrative arc to the release, despite Sakurai talking about how they focused more on the sounds than the lyrics this go-round.  On that note, they also seem to take a bit of outside influence, both from British rock and from younger Japanese bands as well.  Still very distinctly them overall, but it's obvious that they're trying something a little bit different (there are three songs on the album that run 3:30 or less timewise, which is definitely not typical for Mr.Children).

Based on interviews, the band are treating this record as a kind of interest check to see what direction their fans would like them to move in going forward.  As such, it's definitely a bit more divisive among the fanbase than "REFLECTION" was, as the latter had something for just about everyone that liked them.  Personally, I like it though.  Not exactly sure where I rank it in the canon yet, but I've come to really appreciate it for what it is.  As a note, however, "Juuryoku to Kokyuu" is definitely a grower - you will like it more on repeated listens than you do on your first (as a bit of advice, try listening to the first song right after the last one at some point).  Fortunately, the record's only 48 minutes long, so it's probably the easiest of Mr.Children's recent albums to spin.

That's what I'd call my general primer on the album, though if you have any more specific questions, I'd be happy to have a go at those as well.

I didn't expect Mr.Children to be on streaming services

Yeah - they put all of their material (up to, but not including "here comes my love," which was their most recent release at the time) up on digital download and streaming services on their 26th Anniversary date (May 10th).  A lot of their fans, myself included, thought that those limited-run digital best albums they released last year were a test run to see if there was interest/profit to them releasing their discography on the modern services.  Considering those managed to move around 370k copies combined, I'd guess they determined that there was.

Does anyone here listen to base ball bear? They are probably my favourite discoveries this year. Their standouts songs like yoakemae and Sorette for Dare? Part 1 are just the type of pick-me-up whenever I'm in a sour/bad mood. It's a shame they are on hiatus, they're a really high-calibre band.

Base Ball Bear actually have a new EP coming in January:  https://rockinon.com/news/detail/181536

Plus their singer released his first solo album a couple of weeks back - found the lead song to be pretty enjoyable.
