Anyone ok with taking over updating the Oricon thread for me? Its ok if no one does, I'm sure whitedove's should be enough,

What the hell is this music video?

He's just walking around in some weird balloon monster costume  :omgwtf:

Why is this video showing up if it's his Sony channel?

Has anyone heard about this new girl on Sony, Yasuda Rei, who's releasing her debut single next week?

Her single has been on the blogs for a few days now. I guess it leaked early. I saw the PV on Tumblr just now and it's pretty good.

And previews of SKY-HI's new songs:

I'll be starting the J-Pop Weekly Ideal Pairing thing tomorrow. I just threw them all in a randomizer, but some of these pairings are just too perfect. :har:

If all goes well with this, I might do one with the C-Pop and K-Pop ones and then have them go up against the J-Pop winner.

What is this?

Everything else made no impressio on me / RIP BENI cuz her career sucks ass now

Also HAPPY CANADA DAY FELLOW CANUCKS

OMG you're alive!

gods....why is the oricon thread infested with annoying music snobs?

So because they don't like Kyary their music snobs?

Blocked. :._.:

They get better at it. I don't think either of them finished P3 (I think Vinny was the only one who actually played P3. Jeff really isn't an RPG guy from what I've seen...).

Flower and Happiness are on Twitter now! :ahmagah:

Jasmine needs to take a risk with her A-sides and really promote herself. I just hope the other B-side isn't another cover... :._.:

Well the album's out 8/28 so we shall see what becomes of her.

The new MAX single is titled "Tacata" and will be released on 8/7. :la:

I want this new album to be as good as Gold is, but the singles this era don't match up to the ones that were on her first album. Is there any sort of tracklist yet?

Canada Day? Is that like your Fourth of July? :O

Oooh, I like this. :D What is this from?

Not that I know of.

Don't be a hypocrite.

And ever consider changing your username? Because you're so not one (especially when you're the one who started it).

WTF is this Jamiroquai wannabe hell?

I actually like it. I was expecting him to rap.

That Kyary should not deserve #1 because Kyary hasn't been in the industry for 20 years makes them music snobs. They think B'z is better just because B'z have been around 25 years and has sold 80 million records, not because B'z makes better music than Kyary.

I started nothing. I expressed me being happy that there was no repeat of last year that a B'z or Mr. Children blocked Kyary from getting to #1. It was YOU who took that as me saying that Kyary was better than B'z, and I think you said I was delusional in there? I made a post replying to you, but you're too cowardly to even respond.

I don't have to change my username, I'm a gentleman to those who deserve me to be a gentleman. You however are a total bitch, and I shall treat you like a total bitch

But they are better. Kyary's kinda crap.

I stopped paying attention to Jewelry after Seo In Young left tbh

Their peak.

I liked Look At Me for a while, then I got bored of it. I got into Jewelry when they were releasing their album "Sophisticated", so I haven't known them for that long, but the releases after that album just haven't lived up to when I first listened to them. Nevertheless, I am a bit excited. Maybe this could be a good song. You never know.

Going to a friend's house on Thursday for a barbeque and I'll get to watch some then. :ahmagah:

Though my neighbors can't seem to read the calender because they're been doing fireworks at around 1-2am for about a week now.  :soul:

Sophisticated was a good album. You should try Kitchi Island, the one before that.

I don't think you can really say one year of music is better than others per say, every year has some amazing songs and MANY shit songs. But 2010-2012 was awful and should is an exception to this policy.

But yeah I enjoyed 2008 a lot but one year that really sticks out to me as I remembered I loved so many songs at once was 2007. Ivy, Seeya, SG Wannabe, Jang Yoonjung, it was all so perfect.

I actually feel bad for people who got into Kpop post-2009 because they missed some amazing material that they will never appreciate because it's not the style that is in now. Like late 90s to early 00s Korean Music might be my favorite period of music ever because there was a large variety of amazing songs being released and for some reason SO many of them just appealed to me. Like people really missed the wonder of the legends like Kim Hyun Jung, Kim Wan Sun, Uhm Jung Hwa, So Chan Hwee.

That's why I really appreciate shows like Immortal Song and I Am A Singer, it helps expose today's Korean music listeners to some of the greatest songs ever in my opinion.

Now enough of that tangent, all of a sudden I feel like a huge hipster because I'm being like "TODAY'S MAINSTREAM SUCKS!!!!!!"

Most mainstream music now does suck. I feel as if Japan was the last refuge but that's gone to shit in the past few years.

Kashiyuka continues to surprise me with her taste in music. She has recently released a list of record that she has recently purchased and couldn't be anymore surprised with her purchases. She has bought Mosquito by Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Bankrupt by Phoenix, Obsidian by Baths, Woman by Rhye, Half of Where You Live by Gold Panda, Modern Vampires of The City by Vampire Weekend, Avalanche by Quadron and a few others. She has phenomenal taste in music! These are all a few of my favorite record this year but I'm curious as to what Nochi and A-Chan listen to. Here!

I'm gagging again.

This makes me want a solo single just to see what it would be like.

Shouldn't have been so surprised because she listens to quite a bit of independent material but wasn't expecting her to like Gold Panda, Rhye or Yeah Yeah Yeahs but her taste in music remains excellent. Curious as to what Nochi and A-Chan listen to because we've been getting a much deeper look into Kashiyuka and all of the music that she likes. Would love to see her release a solo single alongside Madegg because she has spoken about liking his material quite a bit.

Yeah, I remember one of the other girls saying she liked The Arctic Monkeys but then Kashiyuka gave a list of 20 people and now this.

I figured I'd post this even though we already know most of it:

To reiterate, this '90s craze isn't restricted to cinemas. The two most popular albums of last year in Japan were best-of compilations from the rock group Mr. Children, a '90s phenomenon who also captured the No. 7 bestseller spot with an original disc. Also enjoying a renaissance--albeit on a slightly smaller scale--is Visual kei, a style of music defined by the over-the-top clothes and backstories. Its heyday was in the '90s, but recently more of these groups have launched reunion tours while pop acts like Golden Bomber have topped the music charts using Visual kei's aesthetic.

Even Japan's most popular contemporary musical groups owe a debt to the 1990s. AKB48, who recently beat '90s heavyweight Ayumi Hamasaki to become the best-selling female singles artist ever, have dominated the nation's music charts since 2009. Yet they are practically a reboot themselves--they started in 2005, but borrow many ideas from '80s outfit Onyanko Club and, especially, '90s group Morning Musume. Those two groups approach to pop--dozens of members who constantly changed, an emphasis on cuteness--went out of style in the mid '90s in favor of Mariah-Carey-esque belters like Hamasaki or Namie Amuro. Yet now AKB towers over the J-Pop industry using by bringing those practices back.

..................

But in the '90s, just after the crash, the situation wasn't as dire, and the economy was coming down from a height it'd been climbing to for decades. That meant that in the '80s and much of the '90s, Japan's middle class could "experiment on 'weirder' products," in Marx's words. To the result was a vibrant pop-culture marketplace producing the phenomena that still defines Japan in much of the world's eyes--think Harajuku fashion, or Pokémon.

Yet as the recession wore on and disposable income shrunk, Japanese consumers' daring purchasing habits and corporations willingness to invest in risky, new creations lessened too. When folks did decide to spend on something fun, they were less likely to try out unknown entities--and labels weren't going to push new artists when fewer people wanted them.

........................................

How long will this revival last? Most likely as long as it remains profitable ... which could be a while, based on Japan's current economic path. Ethan Devinerecently wrote in The Atlantic about the country's continued struggles, in particular the ones younger Japanese people face in finding regular employment. The forecast doesn't look promising, and as long as incomes stay the same (or shrink further), time-tested entertainment will be pushed in the marketplace--and the time they were tested in, by and large, will have been the '90s.

Hopefully we get to the part of the 90s trend were soloists are big again soon.
