I've ranted about this in a couple places now, but just so more people know:

Never buy a music video from iTunes or Recochoku unless you want ass-quality videos.

Having done some research, apparently iTunes doesn't sell HD music videos at all. I've seen a bunch of posts that go back years, of people complaining about how iTunes doesn't have HD music videos, and having just bought one for myself recently, I can confirm, it's 480p.

For testing purposes, I also bought the same MV on Recochoku, which was much more expensive, I might add. The video was 480p.

I spent 5 USD on a 480p music video

in 2018.

Just double check that it wasn't just a special case, I bought a different music video from a different artist. It was also 480p.

So not only do Japanese companies have the audacity to try and convince people to buy their MVs, they don't even have the decency to sell you the HD version.

It's slightly ironic coming from Recochoku considering they sell FLAC.

I honestly don't know how Japanese people put up with this. This is seriously some ISP/net neutrality level of shitty business practices.

Who buys music videos?

Japan clearly is, otherwise this problem wouldn't exist.

iTunes, at least, is somewhat reasonable to understand since, internationally, most music videos are available on Youtube anyways, so why bother dealing with something that probably no one buys.

But Recochoku at the very least should offer an HD version if Japanese companies are going to have a stick up their ass about having MVs on youtube. It honestly doesn't make any sense why they don't.

What blows my mind, though, is that people are buying music videos that are available on Youtube, for free, in full, and in HD.

Half of this ranking is available on Youtube in full and those uploads are superior in almost every way compared to what you can buy on Recochoku.

I DON'T GET IT

Do you know how little these sell though? They probably don't even crack 5k.

Avex added Ayu to Apple Music and someone there made a questionable playlist with a questionable description.

Pop stars don't come bigger than Ayumi Hamasaki, an artist with such a wide reach that many call her the “Empress of J-popâ€. The Fukuoka-born belter became one of the most celebrated singers in all of Asia, thanks to her R&B-tinged pop songs and especially her soaring ballads. Her forceful voice takes slow-building, string-swept numbers to gripping crescendos that make listeners feel like they can achieve any dream. She's dabbled in a variety of styles over the course of her successful career, but it all comes back to that impossible-to-ignore voice.

How Utada.

Great taste! Are you a fan as well? Honestly her 80s material is near perfect!

Fun Fact: BLONDE was composed and arranged by BIDDU who was famous for producing Ku-Fu Fighting.

I think a lot of it was a posturing exercise by the k-pop industry. I still remember an article about 2PM having some "sakuras" to fill in the empty seats to give off the impression that they're popular in Japan than they actually are.

Anecdotally, I actually went to a Big Bang concert in Kyocera Dome Osaka back in December last year which happens to be one of the biggest venues in Japan. The venue was only half-full with only the arena and 1st level being relatively filled out. The second level and balcony seats were unused and covered. Which leaves me thinking why they couldn't have gone for a smaller venue if they knew they didn't have the demand to fill the venue.

In the same month, I went to a Kuwata Keisuke's tour in the same venue and the whole dome was filled to capacity. Concert attendance is a pretty good proxy for measuring an artist's popularity in Japan. It goes without saying that Kuwata-san has a significantly bigger pulling power than Big Bang.

Exactly.

I'm curious if MK is secretly a hate site for JE, people act there as if they were personally victimized by those celebrities. Some of those comments are really disgusting, I'm not even talking about translated comments, but comments from MK users.

A lot of people think Johnny's are crap.

I can understand why this song becomes MISIA's new (moderate) hit.

I'm considering seeing MISIA, but the setlist for her current tour is not wowing me.

This sounds more like a GreeeN song than a MISIA song which explains the featuring. GreeeeN tends to have a habit of writing dorama fodder which I'm usually lukewarm to at best, but I can see why Japan would eat it up. I know R&B is dead in Japan but I hope MISIA revisits it someday.

Chihiro is also known for her dorama theme songs so her new track sticks with what she does best. I'm a sucker for her music so this is definitely a welcome comeback from her.

In other news Pocket Biscuits had a one-night reunion yesterday. If anyone is not familiar with them they're a trio of comedians-turned-rock band with a strange blend of music. I think pop rock with electronica/industrial music probably best describes them. They were really popular in the late 1990s as well.

GReeeeN wrote and composed the song, with Kameda Seiji arranging it.

Someone on Hoshino Gen's staff seems to have finally realized they can crowd source subtitles from fans. The MV has subtitles in 8 languages now.

Looks like you can add translations for all the MVs on his channel. Some Korean fan went through the trouble of making Korean subs for basically all of them lol.

Everyone needs to do this.

I'll be in Japan 10/31 - 11/15. I finally bought my ticket. Seeing Sakanaction on 11/13 for sure, got that ticket a while ago. Trying to see Ringo 11/3. Looking to see who else is around and playing...

It's funny because there's proof that people have been fudging with streams and not just with that group. It's just weird because wouldn't you want people to actually be listening to their music than for them to have a fudged top 10 hit.

All that matters is the chart position!

I still love this song tbh

But I really wonder if Ayu is sick of it or not considering she has probably performed it over 200 times at least

edit:

someone uploaded the 1981 Kouhaku onto YouTube. How interesting

Ooooh...

Setlist: https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%AC%AC32%E5%9B%9ENHK%E7%B4%85%E7%99%BD%E6%AD%8C%E5%90%88%E6%88%A6#%E5%87%BA%E5%A0%B4%E6%AD%8C%E6%89%8B

Seiko did "Natsu no Tobira." And Tahara Toshihiko!
