That's an interesting list there, but my untrained ear will disagree with some of it. I only recognise 8/10 of those names, (I only don't know Fukuhara Miho and Fuse Akira)

I agree with you that Kubota and Superfly amazing vocalists. I would probably add MISIA, Yagami Junko, Ohashi Junko, Matsuyama Chiharu, Yamashita Tatsuro and a whole host of Enka singers e.g. Ishikawa Sayuri there. Special mention for Nana Mizuki because she was acutally trained in Enka is quite a capable vocalist in her own right.

Inoue Yosui is a strange one because I've never taken him as a power vocalist since his voice is quite airy thin, but his lives are always on point to his credit. Tamaki Koji's vocals are definitely powerful, but probably not enough to warrant #1.

Hikki's vocals are overrated, Kuu is the better vocalist if we're going to put a token J-Diva in there.

I feel like people think Utada has a great voice because they like her musical abilities and just want to include her.

Yeah I agree that Ishikawa Sayuri and MISIA should be on here. Fuse Akira (#10) used to appear on Kohaku and he was really good.

Yeah I was surprised about Utada. She has great songs but I didn't think she was famous for being a good singer.

It was uploaded to youtube recently but it seems like this is from a few years ago (2014) lol. But it probably wouldn't be too different now.

(Very) rough translations of  some of the reasons listed. I wasn't sure about some of the technical words so sorry if it sounds kind of strange:

1. Tamaki Koji: "His skills are above average and very touching", "His rhythm is precise and his songs have blank space so it is playful", "The outlook of the world expressed in his songs are fantastic", "His live performance and the CD is the same so there is no need for edits".

2. Kubota Toshinobu: "His groove is like authentic R&B", "His sense of rhythm is not common in Japan", "The way he catches each sound is amazing", "There is a deepness to his voice and it is glossy. His fake* is very sensitive and amazing" (* I don't know if it's the same in English but apparently it means like arranging? Like how a singer purposely changes the way he sings during lives).

3. Superfly: "Her powerfulness and stability doesn't lose to the (back-up) bands", "Her voice is carefree and goes forward, it's thick and has depth", "Overwhelming skills and her voice has power and core. Her high-tone voice really stands out from the crowd", "Her range is very wide and her volume is well balanced".

4. Natsukawa Rimi: "Her voice is clear. I couldn't help but be lost in her transparent voice", "Transparent, beautiful voice", "With her voice quality and her skills, it doesn't matter which microphone she uses", "No matter when you hear her, she is always good".

5. Yoshida Miwa: "She is just good", "She lets you hear various techniques in one song" "Her volume and pitch is stable and her performance is full of energy", "Her powerful voice during performances are no different from CDs. Whether it's a ballad or easygoing song, she sings without struggling".

6. Utada Hikaru: "She was born with a radiant voice and her voice has the heartrending sound that Japanese people love", "Her sense of rhythm is extraordinary", "Even without a microphone, her voice still goes through", "Her emotions go along with the melody".

7. Fukuhara Miho: "Her pitches are precise and her her beats are uncommon in Japan", "She has volume. With her skills, she can go overseas", "I heard her performance through PA (Public address system) even before her debut, but her skills are fantastic"

8. Inoue Yosui: "His voice lingers and soaks into your body", "(His singing) is powerful and erotic, and he really transcends the expression/description of 'good and bad'. Number one singer in Japan", "His acapellas are a masterpiece"

8. Exile Atsushi: "I've seen a lot of performances but the only person I was amazed by was him", "His vocal power and overwhelming stability is amazing as a pro", "No matter how many times he rehearses or moves around stage, his skills do not waver".

10. Fuse Akira: "He has a wide vocal range and the vibrato during his high notes really shakes me", "The way his voice spreads out amazing", "No need to explain how great he is"

I remember someone saying that Utada brought an urban, American voice to Japanese music, and I called bullshit on that. Nothing about her voice is really urban or American, and to be blunt, there are other Japanese singers who came out before her who sounded blacker.

That's always been my gripe with Hikki fans. They overhype her because she sang a couple of songs for their favourite childhood game franchise. Which leads us to this rabbit hole of them praising her to high heavens without taking any consideration of the other artists in the scene :/.

It's like the in the west where they praise Adele even though soul singers have always existed.

I would agree, but the Japanese industry praises her to death as well.

Accidental dislike, sorry.

Just to stay on the topic, there still people who claim "jrock > jpop", but I'm curious what exactly has left? In a comparison to something like ten years, when the fandom was pretty active.

Basically visual kei is dead, and when people say "JRock" now, some people (mainly international fans) think of hard rock acts like ONE OK ROCK and MY FIRST STORY. It's similar in that there is a lot of fawning over the band members due to their looks and less of a focus on the actual music.

But then there are some people (mainly people who know what is actaully selling and getting attention in Japan currently) who think of JRock as bands like Sakanaction, Ame no Parade, Kyuso Nekokami, and KANA-BOON, meaning the indie wave that really has become the face of Japanese rock this decade.

But I should make a thread about this...

i think of RADWIMPS (what would fans qualify them as?) mostly right now, also Sakanaction, but i'm sooo out of the jrock loop. i'd love for that to be a thread! i always discover something new that surprises me from jrock fans.

There were genre threads on here, but people just decided to post everywhere instead of just keeping things in the genre threads. It was a good thing though to break things out of the thread.

But my thread was going to be more along the lines of "What do you think of when you think of 'JRock'?"

So I've been planning a trip to Japan around December for a good while now with some bands I want to see in mind. It just so happens B'z will be holding a concert tour around the turn of the year along with Kuwata Keisuke around the same time so trying to get a foothold for those concerts were a no-brainer for me.

I've applied for some B'z tickets a month prior and now I've just got the news that I'll be seeing them in Fukuoka on the 23rd so I'm absolutely over the moon about this! The paperwork and lottery mechanics involved was painful and arduous but it was absolutely worth it rlytearpls.png .

Now, I'm awaiting results for the Kuwata Keisuke lottery application...

On top of that since my sister is a UVERWorld fan, she's looking into purchasing some tickets for their December tour as well. So it's starting to shape up well laugh.png .

Congratulations!

I'm thinking of doing an Oricon Flashback type of deal like the one DocumentaLy does, except over in the Korean section. Korea never had multiple charts, so maybe I'll just do the top three songs of that week. I'll have a harder time with albums, though... Thoughts?

Girl, I suggested someone do this like 2 years ago...

Is this the most universally like Japanese song among people on this forum?

What makes you say that?

Seconded. For whatever it's worth I'd read through it since I'm quite ignorant of what the scene is like 20 years ago. My knowledge of kpop goes as far back as 2005ish.

Off Topic Rant/Rambling: Retrospectively, Japan should've hopped on the House bandwagon in the late 1980s, otherwise we could've had more gems like this:

It should be done.

And you just made me think of:

I'm not sure what you're referring to but I'll assume its the Music Station-Twice thing.

But people were specifically making points about the validity of music station rankings, which is directly related to Japanese entertainment and would appropriately go in this thread. It's not really "ranting"

I'm just really over people acting like they know what they're talking about when they haven't the faintest clue. I mean, if you can't even get the ranking's title right...

wow... the RIAJ thread still going on and on....0u0plz.png

the arguments... I'm actually feeling it.

Well when one side changes their position like they change their underwear and assumes that the other side is doing things to make their faves (which don't do well digitally) look better...

On the other hand, expanding on the topic a bit, I'm actually thinking of starting a thread inquiring about which current popular songs become a hit organically/naturally without over-push from fan campaigns and the likes. I know that Jpop still has it. Some American songs too, not sure about Kpop. Maybe it's worth a shot.

Interesting!

So, I tried going on to some of the old websites I used to frequent to get some Japanese music, but I can't find them anymore. I don't know what happened, but if anyone would be kind enough, could you please PM me with some links to website you download Japanese music from, please?
