Did any of you listen to JASMINE? I think she was the last singer I paid attention to before I completely forgot about j-pop.

sad to say is honestly too good and I liked most of the singles and B-sides she released, I ended up getting GOLD and after that I kind of forgot about her.

JASMINE was good, but then J-Urban died and so did her career.

I remember it premiered on BET (106 and park?) and was like wtf? lol Maybe they saw it there

Maybe.

  • 3 weeks later...

I've been so busy that I didn't really miss this place...

Also, while this place wasn't up, I found myself to be a bit more relaxed as far as being online. I focused on Arama more. I just feel that posting Japanese things here and on Arama to be a bit... redundant. Like I really am thinking of just dropping the digital daily chart. It's become more of a chore than something I really enjoy. I feel like a weekly chart really is enough. And with Arama, I just care less and less about posting about things I really don't care about. But this has been a thing for a while and everyone knows. Like I have zero desire to use my free time posting about LDH acts and YUI clones. If they're not posted by someone, they're just not posted. Similar to how a lot of idol groups aren't posted by anyone.

I also slept a lot more. And I heard basically nothing about KPop. I think the one time this site was down that I heard about KPop was Shinee and BoA on FNS. It like really put things into even more perspective in a strange way. As if I didn't already know how niche KPop is in reality.

Happy Birthday!

The problem with that statement is very major parts of the Japanese industry were founded on a love of mainstream foreign/Western music. If that "K-pop influence" applies to LDH, it applies to so many famous bands, soloists, rappers, etc. K-pop has those types of acts too.

But they're not aping it and trying to cash in on a trend.

About the LDH / KPop thing, either I'm really good at convincing people or LDH really is just KPop in Japanese.

I think the problem with the jpop recommendation threads is that they're expecting to find something like kpop, which doesn't really exist in jpop (aside for some EXILE & co tracks).

Exactly. They don't really want music, but the world of idol to go with that music.

There's no point in suggesting music to K-pop fans because that's not what they're looking for. They want to get invested in members of a group.

Are they capable of liking a music act without knowing what they look like or knowing anything about them? I don't think K-pop fans can handle that.

Very true. Thread idea!

Welcome!!!!

I think most of us (I know I did) have a Kpop phase. But like you, I was more invested in the music and not the "personalities". I like all the variety you get with J-music; which K-pop is severely lacking. And those fandoms are the worse.

I never carried about variety shows when I was into KPop.

Oh lots of bands! Do you like Sakanaction?

I had a kpop phase for sure, but it was always about the music. But maybe it was the era I started liking it in? There were definitely a lot less idols back then and less variety shows. i think that's a factor too.

Like now, for Arashi, i find myself watching their shows less and less. I honestly don't know much unless a friend on LINE posts it or if I bother to browse Twitter. Like i feel my love has died down a lot, but when it comes to their music it's still solid. Even for subbed videos, I find myself caring less now LOL.

Though I wanna learn Japanese so I can understand with my faves are talking bout so  :derp:

True.

Yes! Things were relatively quiet at that point. Then when everything started getting inflated and all these groups came out of no where it got so much worse.

I can't really watch many variety shows. I get so much second hand embarrassment from them and just can't stand them. The kpop ones are honestly the worst, 'cause of the overtly fakeness/we are family stuff they try to pull. I know some are friends but most I'm like just admit you guys are nothing but co-workers who are paid to hang out and move on.

The shows are quite cringe...

I'm glad one of my favorite Korean music veterans, Uhm Jung Hwa, just had a comeback. Her new song "Dreamer" sounds very reminiscent of older Korean pop songs. Her other new song "Watch Me Move" is good but not a favorite of mine.

With the exception of a few acts and a random song here and there, Korea's current pop mainstream sector just doesn't really do it for me. That being said I've always been a much bigger fan of Korea's underground R&B, Hip-hop and indie scene anyway.

These were on my YouTube feed and they're cute!

The urban scene has been pumping out some good stuff this year.

I wish K-electronica didn't... suck... there are very few worthwhile things.

I feel like so much stuff the urban scene puts out is repetitive... A bunch of bassy stuff verging on trap.

I'm surprised people aren't really feeling the current Korean pop scene. I've been enjoying the output lately so much more than I have in years past

I like "TT" but the rest of their material is bleak.

Why do I never have anything to download when JPS has freeleech?

I'm so glad I asked for your opinion.

Don't you have jerk off videos from D-list Korean celebrities to leak?

On another note could you argue Amuro Namie is a Western music copycat?

I mean when's the last time she used Japanese composers?

That reminds me:

Amuro’s grasp of English means she trips over her own consonants – I really thought she said she was “a leper, not a fighter†at one point. When I close my eyes and imagine she’s some Slovenian or Latvian girl singing for her life on the stage of Eurovision in the year 2006, I suddenly like it a lot more, because that’s exactly what it sounds like.

What kind of foolishness?

How much did yg pay for that award?

Exactly.

I don't know how to feel for the K-pop fans who think iKON is even remotely relevant in Japan or that the award holds any merit. I want them to live in their fairy tale, but I also want them to be smacked by reality.

So smack them.

actually it's not

What are you talking about?

I've never really been a fan of SES as a group, mostly because I can't stand Bada most of the time, but this song is nice.

But it will never make up for one of the worst Korean songs of all time:

I like them because of Bada. And I love "MAD"!

is he in big bang

STOP!!!

I don't know much about it cause I got into it a few days ago, BUT

Versailles is coming back, they even have an Europe Tour to make, and I saw a topic here on OH about someone asking for and someone recommending new visual kei bands

There's still people working with visual kei, and there's still people buying it and going to the shows, and there's also those like me that are becoming interested in it, SO, I can say for sure it's not a dead scene.

And it would be good to have a thread in here to talk about it.  (:

The reason there is no thread is because it's a dead scene. It was a trend that was hot in the 90s and 00s, but the world has moved on. When a lot of people in the West talk about JRock, they think of visual kei, but Japanese rock in Japan today is largely focused on older acts and indie bands. Visual kei is like in the basement. It's the equivalent of bringing up like Ami Suzuki now when everyone is talking about Utada and Namie and Kana.

So you're saying that instead of a visual kei thread, there is a Jrock thread?

you could've just said that, sweetie

I was explaining that visual kei is passe more than anything else. There is a JRock thread, but we don't really use it anymore. We just post stuff in the their own threads now instead of segregating it.
