What exactly is the story behind this?

They're a pair of characters that the two have played in an MV prior to this back in 2002 (which is also when the original demo of this song was recorded) that they've revived for this Tour since the demo version of this song was on the Limited Edition of their most recent album.  The song itself has parts where both a man and a woman are supposed to sing, so one is playing the man and the other the woman.  As to why they went with a karaoke style music video, no idea.

Have you heard of kasarinchu? I randomly downloaded their new single on jmp3 and it made me think of you so I came here to post even though I'm supposed to be on "hiatus." They kind of remind me of kobukuro, but they're under SMEJ so you cant see much of their vids unless you have a proxy/vpn. But here's one of their earlier vids.

No, I hadn't actually.  The vocalist reminds me of a mix of Kobukuro and Motohiro Hata, with music reminiscent of the latter plus Yoshida Yamada.  I think I'll take a download of their most recent single myself, since I've a feeling that I'll like it.  Thanks for the recommendation (and for taking the time out of your hiatus to make it)!

I went ahead and downloaded some of their older material and I swear in some songs it was like listening to the love child of Motoo and Noda.  I really want to find their older albums though before they signed to sony because apparently they released two 20 track albums. But I really like the sound, it's really laid back and kind of folksy with a slight reggae feel. They've also done music witht Kotaro Oshio, Kimaguren and Rake.

Do you know the kobukuro song that had a kind of Celtic sound? I remember really liking it but I never downloaded it. I know it was a recent too.

Ah, that's the lead (and final) track off their most recent album, "Ima, Sakihokoru Hana-tachi yo".  Album title was "One Song From Two Hearts", but they also had a single titled that, so you might want to check the file-size if you're looking to download the whole thing and not just the song's PV (which is also out there).

As to your earlier statement, that's a very intriguing comparison, one that I intend to spend some time exploring myself.  I'll see what I can do about finding the earlier albums (if you happen to have titles, that would help a lot) and if I do, I'll pass them your way.  :)

No problem. :) It really helps when people suggest artists rather than me having to go look for one every week.

Then I'll be sure to suggest artists when they have a release out during a week (actually might have one in mind for late August...).  Ah, but I did realize one thing that's off about the post - the last three single links ("Tsuki to Taiyou", "Californy", and "RHYTHM OF THE SUN") all link to "Tsuki to Taiyou", so stuff probably didn't copy properly for some reason.

which is your favourite Doctor, I was thinking of just starting with the first episode of the 2005 series, but that is probably my OCD talking since I'd feel like I'm missing something by not watching it from there

I'm a rather big fan of Patrick Troughton (the 2nd doctor), since while he was warm and welcoming at times, there was something uncannily alien about the Doctor he played.  Plus, "The Enemy of the World" is an utterly brilliant serial and still one of my favorites to this day.

OMG this person on Arama is convinced BABYMETAL is a band. Actually according to said person, anyone who has live instruments on stage is a band. So MISIA is a band as well...

I've been looking in on that conversation every so often and snickering to myself, especially since their entire argument falls apart when you look at actual dictionary definitions of words like "band" and "musician" and not their more colloquial meanings.  Still, I doubt anything you say will change their mind, given how they're acting.

I'M SO LOST!

I'm not sure if you mean with what to do with the guy or my explanation about why he's wrong.  xD  Regardless, I'd just let it be, since you two aren't going to convince each other, no matter who's right and who's wrong.  Sometimes, 'tis just better to walk away when the only other option is to just drag something out further than it needs to be.

Hmmmm.....

Takayoshi Ohmura , Leda, BOH, and Aoyama Hideki of Kami are definitely a band that is attached to Baby Metal (their backing band who performs all of the instrumentals and such). However, Su, Moa, and Yui of Baby Metal wouldn't be considered a band. They're definitely a group.

Yeah - that I agree with.  I'd never not call their backing band a 'band', because they are.  Babymetal themselves though (as in, the three members) don't fit the actual criteria of the definition.  They're a group, certainly, but not a band.

Agreed! Su, Yui, and Moa of Babymetal aren't a band because they don't play any instruments. They're essentially a group that performs over and include death/ thrash metal into their music. Takayoshi Ohmura , Leda, BOH, and Aoyama Hideki of Kami are definitely a band though. What argument is her making? Is he stating that Su, Yui, and Moa are a band???

Your interpretation is the way I view it.  This guy's PoV is rather ... strange though.  He's trying to say that Babymetal are in fact a metal band and that they should be treated in the same way as say, Maximum the Hormone are.  In addition, he's attempting to argue that every bit of music is composed of gimmickry, which just doesn't sit right with me.  I might not be doing the guy's argument total justice, but that's how I understand it.  I'll just link you to the post if you want to take a look at it yourself - it's the first really long comment chain:  http://aramajapan.com/aramaoriginal/editorial/why-are-japanese-idols-expanding-overseas/3141/

Hmmm.....

Su, Moa, and Yui are the only members of Babymetal. They're the only members of the act that have been promoted, marketed, and scene throughout most of their imagery. They're also the only members that show up to events outside of their live performance. Takayoshi Ohmura , Leda, BOH, and Aoyama Hideki aren't promoted alongside the group and aren't featured in any of their marketing or images outside of their live performance. They're a backing band and not associated fully with Babymetal. Had Takayoshi Ohmura , Leda, BOH, and Aoyama Hideki been featured as heavily as Yui, Su, and Moa then his argument makes a bit of sense but they aren't. Yui, Moa, and Su could function as the vocalist while Takayoshi Ohmura , Leda, BOH, and Aoyama Hideki pl;ay the instruments..... they would essentially be a Lacuna Coil or Within Temptations. However, Takayoshi Ohmura , Leda, BOH, and Aoyama Hideki aren't actually part of Babymetal because they're a back up band.

It's an argument of technicalities, aye.  Had they all been marketed and promoted together as a package, sure.  I'd still consider it a bit borderline, due to the weird bit about vocalists not being synonymous to musicians (effectively, in my experience, and to fit to the dictionary's definition of 'band', the vocalist of a band tends to do one of these four things in addition to singing:  1. Play an instrument themselves, 2. Be involved in writing lyrics, 3. Be involved in composition, or 4. Be involved in arrangement/production).  That's only if you really hard-line it though, and had they been promoted as a 7-member band, I'd probably have let it slide.  Still, we're discussing "What-if's" here.  They weren't promoted like that, so therefore the three members of Babymetal are not a band, but their backing musicians are.

I don't know where to sit with this song. I like some parts of it. For other parts, I wonder why they felt they needed them to exist.

Shonan no Kaze's arrangements tend to usually be a bit messy - it's part and parcel of the type of group that they are.  I like this song for the most part, but I can understand a lot of reasons why someone might have problems with it.

^ Glad you're feeling better

"Let's not even bring Ringo into this because bringing her up when talking about Namie is like bringing up lobster at a hot dog stand."

Kasarinchu is officially my new favorite duo.

Vaguely related to that, I've come across a band that you might like.  The vocalist sounds like a mix of Noda and someone who I can't quite place (it'll come to me eventually), though their music is a fair bit different:

Thanks! This is really really nice. I like the vocalist and he does remind me a bit of someone else and I'm not sure who. The second song does remind me a bit of Days by FLOW. I really like their sound though. It's a little unconventional, but it definitely works.

I went ahead and downloaded their album.

Yeah - it's vexing me that I can't remember who the other person in his voice is.  Since it's distinct, but a name is escaping me...  But yeah, their sounds a little off-kilter, but I like it, particularly the groovy bent that "Spider" takes.  Glad you like them.

So I'm having an issue...

I talked to my middleman in Japan about getting me Creephyp's new single. From what I read, Tower and TSUTAYA each have a bonus, which is a photobook. The books for both stores are different.

■先着特典
タワーレコードオリジナル特典:「エロ」本(八月号)
TSUTAYAオリジナル特典:「エロ」本(九月号)

She tells me that Tower has a photobook but TSUTAYA's bonus is toilet paper?

I can clearly see that Tower has the photobook included on their site: http://tower.jp/item/3582992?recommend=7

But there's nothing for TSUTAYA:

Is there a book for TSUTAYA? The band's site says so. The store's site says nothing. My middleman says toilet paper!

http://www.tsutaya.co.jp/tty_cate/music/tsutarock.html <- The Power Push section on Tsutaya's site says it exists, even if the page itself doesn't.  So I don't know what to tell you - it's possible that Tsutaya had a REALLY limited stock and already ran out of the intended bonus and are trying to cover it since they should have more.  Who knows.

Happy Birthday Owatari!

Ughh, my argumentative nature: http://onehallyu.com/index.php?/topic/90080-n9-snsd-ranks-1-on-oricon%E2%80%99s-chart-for-the-10th-day-in-a-row/

To be honest it doesn't really bother me, my argumentative nature. It's a benefit. But I couldn't resist calling this mediaplay out. Why are they bragging about being #1 on like the deadest week in ages? I guess a #1 is a #1?

Most likely.  Though honestly, there are several acts that easily could have snagged a #1 this week by either moving their date forward or back just a bit, so it should be taken with a grain of salt.

Thank you all!  :)

I can't believe its finally raining. I don't remeber the last time I've seen rain. It makes me so lazy and want to listen to music from the 90's for some reason.

A belated happy birthday!  That's been me with the 80s today - I've been flipping between Yamashita Tatsuro, Kazumasa Oda, Takeuchi Mariya and the like for most of the day.

Mmmm.  Tossing around the idea of applying to write at Arama, considering that I end up posting articles around here fairly recently anyway and it wouldn't be that hard to edit them and make them presentable enough to be posted (and considering they don't require that much time, it wouldn't be that bad).  Not sure if I will, but we shall see.

I was actually looking forward to this album. YG handled him so poorly with no album coming out at all. I mean BoA was a flop but I saw a commercial for it on MTV one time. Girls premiered on 106 n park which was weird, but it was something and they just when nowhere from there. Asian acts are so mishandled. Island had Utada at Sephora shops with come back to me playing at 2 am on the radio.

Do it!! Spread you wisdom and great taste.

DO IT! I'll push for you if you apply.

I went to the Utada/Sephora event in New York!

At the least I'll have plenty of references to past work thanks to all of the stuff I've written up from natalie.  Would you recommend I make a Disqus account prior to applying, since I actually don't have one.  xD

I'm so happy :rlytearpls: Yuzu will sound good on a ballad like Hanabi.

I'll keep any eye out for these performances, since I'm sure that they'll be great.

This is cute. Who is he?

Egashira Yuuya - as best as I can tell based on the limited information that I can find, he was the winner of a talent competition, which allowed him to get a record deal and release this mini-album.  I saw the release, "Umbrella", on one of my download sites and was intrigued when I saw "blues" and "jazz" listed next to "pop" and "pop-rock" on his genres, since that's not too typical a combination for a male solo artist in Japan.  So I gave it a shot and found it pretty darn enjoyable on the whole.
