Why are Namie, JUJU and Kana Nishino the only female soloists that can still sell well?

Granted, Namie does sell better, but she has been around longer and amassed a large following.

There are other female soloists that sell decently too like miwa, but not at the same level. It's like Namie>>>JUJU & Kana>>miwa & aiko>>everyone else.

Their sales have also gone down a little, but digitally they still are always selling well, and their physical sales are still not bad or massively dropping.

What is it about them that you think helps keep them successful and relevant? Their image, lyrics, marketing, dumb luck?

IMO Japanese female soloists are boring as fuck. Japan doesn't really boast any stellar Pop acts that stand out among the generic balled crap that usually comes out.

I would honestly rather listen to western top40 female singers than Japanese ones.

Umm you can't really include Kana in this..her last single sold about the same as Kuu and Ayu's last.

Darling or We Don't Stop?

WDS still sold around 30K so far in physical sales, and while it only got #2 digitally, it was her first one not to be #1 since Motto in 2009 I believe. Since Darling just came out, can't tell what it's sold, but it's doing well digitally (still #1 I think)

Her Best of albums from last year sold well too.

JUJU's last single peaked at #25 with 6,814 copies sold total and her album this year has sold 102,856. She's successful obviously but Namie and Kana are both going over Platinum with their albums so I don't consider Juju on their level.

Ehh I guess that's a good point. I guess it'd be more like Namie>>>Kana>>JUJU.

She did make the whole cover album thing really popular.

I don't get Kana's appeal..her songs and look are classic Ayu but without the risky/challenging parts that make it interesting.

You forgot Nana Mizuki.

It's more like Namie > Kana > JUJU / aiko / miwa / Nana Mizuki > everyone else

I think the thing is Japan isn't really here for female soloists who aren't doing more ballad-driven / AC music with a conservative image, outside of Nana Mizuki who does otaku music.

Can I just...

Tell me this ain't god tier aesthetics paired with the voice of an angel. Pretty simple why no one can compete.

WTF are you talking about?

But it went gold digitally while Kuu's and Ayu's didn't even get certified. And if she was to release an album now, it would probably at least double the total sales of Ayu's and Kuu's albums' in its first week.

But Hot Stuff was certified gold digitally a few months ago.

Is Ayu on the way to stealing Kana's Ringtone Queen crown?

Meh, ringtones are falling out of favor anyway as the Japanese ditch Japanese feature phones in favor of smartphones like the rest of the world (this is also why iTunes is now more important than Recochoku). The RIAJ doesn't even certify ringtones anymore since the start of this year. Most of the ringtones that were being certified last year were songs from 2008 or so.

Depending on what genres you're counting, Superfly should also probably be included, since I'd hedge a bet that the next album she releases will still go gold at minimum, probably close to 200k total (and her Best last year did do 325k+, if my memory is correct).

I was going to count her but didn't want to since she last released a studio album in 2012. Same thing goes for ayaka.

I guess that's why Recochoku combined their PC downloads with the singles charts earlier this year. I'm gonna miss seeing those flip phones, but I'm already seeing more smartphones in shows and stuff.

Ranking on any reochoku chart is nice, but now more so than before, the singles charts seems like it'll be more indicative of what Japan is listening to and buying.

oh yeah forgot about Nana.

I'd say your ranking is accurate. Dunno about aiko and miwa, only since I don't never hear about aiko's digital stuff.

Now if Utada returned. Well who knows at this point, I never thought Ayu would sell less than 100K of her albums and yet here we are.

WDS.

I don't get Kana's appeal..her songs and look are classic Ayu but without the risky/challenging parts that make it interesting.

I like a lot of Kana's songs, but I do agree. She's like Ayu with less variety. I don't think it's entirely her fault. When she does take risks, it never seems nearly as well received as it might have been for Ayu or Koda Kumi. Look at WDS.

Still, I'd applaud some more variety from her.

Forgot about Superfly honestly (I keep thinking she's still band), but yeah she's be there too. I didn't include ayaka for the same reason you said. Kana released a Best of album and singles, so that's why I included her. Plus, we all know she sells well.

I didn't even bother with Beni or May J. since they're best selling stuff are Cover albums. If only Beni could have pulled a JUJU and had her original material sell well. May J. might with her new album...but I doubt it.

I remember a couple years ago Ms. Ooja seemed popular. But I think that day is gone.

Ehh, but we all know Kana still sells (via digital singles and whatnot).

I think most of JUJU's singles for DOOR also ended up topping the digital chart (excluding the one out a month prior, though it did do pretty well digitally) and she still took a fairly big tumble in album sales from YOU to DOOR.  I don't think Kana will get hit that badly, to be fair, but it wouldn't surprise me if she opened below 140-150k for her next album (which IS still good).  Album sales have gotten a lot trickier to predict in recent years, so I try to be very conservative with my estimates on the whole.
