What's one ignorant thing you used to believe?

When I was a kid I didn't know Stevie Wonder was blind. I thought he just wore sunglasses everywhere because he was just a cool guy. I remember the moment I learned he was blind it felt like I just got hit in the head with the truth. It was a weird moment, made me question a lot of stuff.

What about you guys?

Homeopathy. If you still believe in that crap I suggest you read up on on just how big a crock of shit the entire industry and how they deceive people into believing their magic ointment will cure anything from aches to allergies. It's fucking quakery of the lowest order.

That I needed to be "normal". My mom would tell me I was acting crazy and that I had no common sense, my brother too a bit, so I'd try to act "normal" in public so that people would like me. Eventually I was found to have autism and social anxiety disorder. I wasn't very good at acting "normal" anyway though, and at some point I realized that if people only like me when I act a certain way then they're not really people who are worth my time.

I also thought that I couldn't be bi. My mom is homophobic, but at some point I realized that I don't need her approval on my sexuality. I realized a lot of faults in my mother that I think I ignored at first, simply because she was my mother. I was a bit too naive when I was young. Sometimes I have to think of what makes me happy, instead of how I can please others. -nods-

I remember being absolutely terrified as a child believing I automatically had AIDS for thinking the boys at school were cute. When I was an appropriate age and my mother and I finally talked about it, despite always being open and accepting (even nourishing in certain traits) she says one of her biggest regrets was not being more direct about the media's portrayal of sexuality. It's a double-edged sword, could have spared me a lot of trouble but at the same time she just didn't want me to get more hurt by WHY stereotypes were enforced, and not the stereotypes themselves.
