and since literally anyone can join for free, don't be surprised if non-fans start registering to use their space because lots of exo fans did that to other fandoms and some people are still pissed.

of course f(x) fans are (rightfully) the most upset, but when has that ever made a difference to SM.

educate yourselves:

What I wanna know is how the hell this turned into a whose sob story is better thread?
Context is important people.
The reason I wrote what Sarah has apparently decided to share with the very reasonable group of people that is a kpop forum has nothing to do with what ya'll are bitching about.
I live in Korea. So does the other girl those tweets belong to.
Every fucking day we try to attend an event it is literally hell for us because we are not official fans. We cant be. No one can because SHINee official fanclub membership has been closed after the 1st time it opened. There are a few hundred "active" official fans, fans who joined in ''08 and are still attending events. But everyone else who became a fan after that are unofficials. SHINee has gained a shit load of fans since 2008 obviously but all those fans get the shaft at every single event because they dont have the title "official fan".

I'm now going to attempt to explain to you how being a fan in Korea works if you're a fan of an SM group. For those of you with limited reading abilities or those who simply don't like to read lots of text despite being in a written online forum, you might skip these.

To attenda music show in Korea,

for SM groups,
1) you need to follow the official site every second
2) as soon as the notice for a music show goes up you need to jump on a train and go to the broadcasting station,
3) find a tree that has a piece of paper on it,
4) take a selfie with the damn paper,
5) send it to the number on the said paper and receive a number.
This usually takes place 3 days before a music show.

Then you need to go back to the same place for 2 days to "check-in" which is basically where the girls who do the paper thing have a list of everyone who sent their selfies and got a number. They read those names, you say "here" when you hear yours and then you go home come back the next day, do the same thing, if you're late or if you don't show up your name gets crossed off the list.

On the day of the show you go there at 4am depending on which music show it is, do another check-in, and wait outside until 10am. If the previous night had a check in and the early morning check in is before 5am when the public transport is not working, you usually need to stay outside the whole night waiting for the next mornings check-in.
So after all that you've waited until 10-11am or later depending on the show, they seperate the line into 2 groups.
Officials and non-officials.
And you receive a number on your wrist.

Now here's the fun part.
While you stayed outside for 15 hours in the freezing cold of November, an official fan can literally come 5mins before the recording and still get in line in front of you.
And here's an even better fun fact.
Music show studios are all different sizes. If on a particular day more than 300 officials show up, non officials cant go in because there isnt enough space. Officials get the 1st dibs on everything. So even if you spend 4days running from check-in to check-in, stay out in the freezing cold for 15 hours, an official who shows up right before the recording is gonna get in front of you and might be the reason you can't go in. Because she's an official.
It's really all sorts of exciting when after all the shit you had to do, right when they start allowing people in they count everyone and cut the line 2 people before you and you realize of the 300non-officials there only 6 have made it in after the official fans.

Now add to all this the fact that there are 4 "big" music shows a week. All have the same system. So during a promo period all the non-officials are running from one end of the city to another trying to make it to different checkins on time to see their idols.
Whereas offocials just have to show up on the day.

Now lets talk concerts. Fun things huh?

Tickets go on sale the day before the actual day they go on sale for officials.
Its so much fun when you stay awake at a PC-bang because they have fast internet and maybe at least there you might have the tiniest chance of getting a ticket, the site opens on the day and you see that all the tickets are already sold out because officials bought all of them so you never stood a chance to bein with. Fun.
Concert goods? Special "officials only" concert merch.

Music show live shows?

Not the pre-recording but lives? You know where they announce the winner and stuff?
Only for the official members. Because all fandoms are together for that one, there is limited space for each fandom and those go to the official fans. Non-officials never get to see live shows.

Joint promos with other groups? Shit gets even funnier.
Remember the key-woohyun subunit promos?

Well heres the funny thing. Only 300fans were allowed to the recordings for their promos. 300.
Of course the officials get the 1st dibs. Now here's the fun part.
Infinite is not an SM group. They open fanclub memberships every year. So every infinite fan is an official fan.
Even non-infinite fans who kinda maybe likes infinite a little bit have fanclub memberships because it makes it easier for events. Even my exo-fan roommmate who just thinks L is kinda cute got an infinite membership because she thought "it might come in handy one day" . Yeah. Every friggin inspirit is an official fan whereas SHINee hasnt had officials in 6 years.
So when they're doing joint promos and officials get 1st dibs, it was 80%infinite fans because SHINee had so little active officials and even less who could get in. Majority of the fandom are un-officials who couldn't get in and there were almost no shawols for the 1st week until the people responsible realized what was going on and seperated the 2 lines.

These are just small examples of WHY official fandoms are important and why people are so pissed at the fact that SM basically shits on and refuses to acknowledge any fan that became a fan of their groups after the 1st year they were formed.

For i-fans who cant partake in events it might not be a big deal but please dont even try to understand why people who are actually affected by official memberships are bitching so hard over this.
Any korean event has at least 40-50% Japanese fan attendance whose Japanese fanclub memberships are useless in Korea. Same goes for Taiwanese, Chinese fans and the small percentage of western foreigners who live in Korea and routinely attend events.
Not to mention the sheer majority of any fandom who became a fan after the 1st year of their debut.

It makes being a fan very very difficult which is why people are so pissed.
Its not some symbolic thing where people want to be able to whip out their card and scream look look at how official I am, cool huh?
Its something they desperately need, to be able to actually attend anything fandom related in Korea.

So please for the love on God get off your high horses because you don't even get why this is a big deal in the 1st place.
God just look at where you've dragged the whole conversation, shits embarassing.

For those who''ve actually read this, nice reading skills, gratz!

On mobile and I cant spoiler so save your curses plz I tried ã…  ã…

I'm confused as to how this is a problem... Everything is always a competition for SM fandoms.

I don't think you understand the perks of being an official fanclub member
