Almost all kpop fans make baseless assumptions, some boasting about a company's success without analyzing their income statements. I would like to take the opportunity to debunk a few common ideas.

Im too lazy to do more research prior to 2010.

What is revenue?

A firm's revenue is the total amount received for selling all goods or services. Also called gross income, it is the total amount of money a company generates in a time period. Public kpop companies also raise funds through stocks.

Net Profit in 2010

SM: 17, 117 (16, 603, 490 USD)

YG: 9, 631  (9, 315,488 USD)

Net Profit in 2011

SM: 22, 768 (22,084,960 USD)

YG: 12,934 (12,545,980 USD)

Net Profit in 2012

SM: 39, 909 (38,599,585 USD)

YG: 15,426 (14,923,575 USD)

It is important to not confuse revenue with profits:

A firm's net profit is basically the difference betweens its revenue and its costs. Costs include both operating expenses and costs, interest, taxes and dividends.

Operating profit is the difference total revenue and costs. However, operating profit does not subtract taxes.

A company's growth depends on its profits, not its total revenue.

Revenue is not a real measurement of a company's earnings. Their success is measured by profits. In the kpop world, revenue includes all consolidated sales from tours, CF deals, comebacks, musicals, movies, etc. Having multiple tours and comebacks in a year doesn't necessarily translate to more profit for music companies. Why? We are looking at the bigger picture here by taking into consideration costs as well as taxes that cut back on final earnings.

The government takes a huge chunk out of gross revenue through taxes. I'm sure you all remember that SM recently getting a corporate tax fee of 10 million for evading taxes. lol

If a company cannot manage to increase their sales while minimizing overall costs, then that can reflect a negative value of their net profit margin. Net profit margin is company's ability to convert revenue into profits. Its also an indication of a company's efficiency and control over costs.

For example:

Despite boasting exponential gross sales, SM reported a net loss of 27.9% from 2012 to 2013 due to increase overall expenses and decrease in exports.

Since then, SM has been relying on Exo for additional revenue streams. SM’s saviors indeed. However, net losses are not necessarily detrimental to a company.

Now we will compare YG and SM through a margin analysis. Margin analysis is a formula used to compare the performances between companies within the same industry:

Net Profit Margin in 2010

SM: ~17.6%

YG: ~16.7%

Net Profit Margin 2011

SM: ~15.9%

YG: ~16.5%

Net Profit Margin 2012

SM: ~16.5%

YG: ~17.6%

Net Profit Margin 2013

SM: ~6.9%

YG: ~13.3%

Net Profit Margin 2014 Q1

SM: ~5.1%

YG: ~13.4%

I didnt convert wons into USD to compute the net profit margin.

So AKMU and 2NE1 brought more profits than SNSD and TVXQ this year?

Not necessarily. SM generated a total revenue of $60 million compared to YG's $40 million. Total revenue consists of all consolidated sales meaning yes, what SNSD and TVXQ brought in was most likely a great portion of SM's total revenue which was greater than YG's $40 million during the first quarter, but costs cut back SM's profits to $2.6 million.

Net Profit 2014 Q1

SM: 3, 391 (3,280,555 USD)

YG: 5, 900 (5,723,000 USD)

You can't use net profit to compare how much groups generated for their company because profit subtracts costs.

You would have to look at both groups combined contributed to their respective company's gross sales and then compare.

So basically YG is getting closer to SM, is that what I'm reading?

Due to increasing costs for SM and other things, yes. But if SM's management improves their control costs, they could easily surpass YG by a landslide.

do things like this just include the korean market...or does it add in others like japanese, chinese, etc?

Yes, total revenue includes everything.

A companies' costs includes a number of things, not just their operating costs and expenses which is what the type of cost you are talking about.
