laiwingnang 85
want to introduce some cantopop music, mainly from its golden era when it was popular in many places in Asia... Cantopop is cantonese pop, despite being in a regional dialect, Cantonese, it managed to spread to other parts of Asia and overseas Asian communities in the 80s/90s. Many cantopop artists, both their cantopop and mandarin pop hits are what most of today's big artists like Jay Chau, SHE, etc.. listened to in their younger days....It was diverse in music style, a mix of european, american, jpop and traditional chinese music..of course, ballad is always the big thing in Chinese pop and there are many hits in that genre...It's sad that there used to be alot of cantopop resources online in English 15 years ago and now most of it has disappeared. ...so here I am, with a cantopop thread/blog. I'm going to post some of it here, but I'll leave most of it on my blog http://cantopopmusic.blogspot.com I have no idea when onehallyu will change server again and I don't want my efforts to go down the drain.. if ppl are interested, I'll continue here, if not, I'll just continue on my own blog
laiwingnang 85
Beyond - 海闊天空 (Vast ocean and sky) 1993 Beyond is one of the most influential pop rock bands in Chinese history, and not just in cantopop. Many of their songs are still being heavily played today all over Chinese speaking nations. Vast ocean and sky's lyrics might sound a bit corny to the average listener and the lyrics seem to be a bit ambiguous, but knowing the background story explains everything. The song was written at a time when cantopop music is at its commercial peak, when the industry is flooded with pretty idols and newcomers with nothing more than a pretty face is popping up by the second, cantopop was becoming overly commercial and manufactured. Bands that were once relevant in the 80s have disappeared off the radar. The media at the early 90s was mainly focused on the 4 heavenly kings (which I will talk about later). Koma Wong at one point said "Hong Kong has no music industry, there is only an entertainment circle" . Beyond, feeling dishearted by the future prospects of the industry as well as their career, decided to focus on Japan, the lyrics describes their sentiments with reference to their situation at that time. I personally love Vast ocean and sky, the arrangement is perfect. The song started with a quiet piano verse, then comes beautiful string sections that builds up to an emotional soaring guitar solo. It's a beautiful rock ballad with a memorable melody and a raw heartfelt rendition. It's one of those songs that I cannot get tired of because it's so full of real emotion.Althought Vast ocean and sky was only a modest hit at the time of release, it soon became a huge smash due to the death of its lead, Koma Wong, who fell off a stage on their Japanese promo tour and sustained a fatal head injury. Ironically, the song was released not long before his accident, which coincidentally contain lyrics about "falling". The song has become the song to commerate his passing and has since become the ultimate Beyond classic as well as one of the biggest classics in cantopop.Beyond - 海闊天空 (Vast ocean and sky)From album: Rock & Roll (樂與怒) 1993 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GT_s-1A5kBE

laiwingnang 85
^ that was a late 80s song...and kind of an embarrassment on Anita mui's career because Priscilla Chan released her version of the song the same week and it ended up alot more popular...Priscilla's version is still seen as THE version in China...corporate events from all over china are still hiring her to sing that song Candy Lo's Kindly Break Up 好心分手 this song is like the last cantopop song to become relevant in the chinese pop industry..and the duet version with leehom wang helped make it a even bigger mega smash ...cantopop has since become irrelevant outside cantonese regions and candy lo became irrelevant in cantopop not long after. It was a compromise for her because she isn't a karaoke pop singer, but it paid off...she was not popular before this song.

laiwingnang 85
have to talk about faye wong, who is the definitive diva of 90s cantopop as well as cpop in general. You don't know shit about cpop if you haven't heard of her. She moved to Hong Kong in her teens from Beijing with her family. Back in China, she recorded some Teresa Teng cover version tapes, but nothing major. She started in 1989 and was moulded into a commercial pop singer and had a stage name...but after she started to get popular in the early 90s, she gained artistic control over her own music became a mega diva in chinese music...she is an icon, nowadays, she is still very popular although she hasn't released an album in like a decade..The Chinese market is really divided, there are a large large group of ppl who likes 80s/90s classics and don't care for any of the new music, large enough for those 80s/90s veteran singers to still have sold out tours all over china and still ranking high on streaming. Lightning 191
A lot of great songs here already. You have some good taste laiwingnang. Some older cantopop singers I really enjoy listening to are Cass Phang, Sammi Cheng and my favourite of all time, still going strong and looking great, Kelly Chen! laiwingnang 85
^ your taste is similar to mine, that's all. The majority of the songs I chose were top 10 hits anyways. I was planning on featuring Kelly Chen next. She's leaning more towards electronic and britpop music. I listen to more classic cantopop than anything else. To me, cantopop strikes a very good balance between substance and commercial factors. the music has style and the artists sells themselves on their stage presence, character, distinctive vocals with alot of emphasis on song interpretation. Good instrumentals and distinctive melody. The only thing missing was the flashy MVs which didn't really matter during that era, but the music and the charisma of the stars was enough to make itself popular. Cantopop nowadays is a completely different story. Totally amateurish.

laiwingnang 85
Kelly Chen - Part I Lightning 2 posts above mentioned Sammi Cheng, Cass Phang and Kelly Chen, who were known mainly for their middle of the road pop music...Kelly initially was a model for ads/commercials, then turned actress, sang on a movie soundtrack that became very popular and got into a singing career. Will start with Kelly's later half of her career, her most successful period where she makes the most commercial music on the market, beat oriented music (eurodance, r&b) with a catchy chorus and dramatic ballads... Kelly was popular in cantopop and in the entire cpop as well, she was active from the mid 90s to mid 00s... She started out as a brit-pop/rock, electro pop artist, at the turn of the century when cantopop was losing its market, she started going for very commercial pop..and this was her most successful era... her hits in reverse chronological order 毫無ä¿ç•™ No Reservation 2006 沙塵滾滾 (with Jordan Chan) 2005 PHONE殺令 Phone Kill Bill 2004 å°ä¸èµ·ä¸æ˜¯ä½ Sorry, not you 2004 å«å¦† Dowry 2004 Shake Shake 2003https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXGWr8MPwOY戀愛神經 love nerve 2002 有ç¦æ°£ blessed 2002https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0JVFrXvbso最愛演唱會 Favorite concert 2001https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZJgQT10SmsASK 2001https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjGbDEWJdEcé»žè§£ä½ ä¿‚å’ why are you like this 2001https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yLH9_KAkdMéš¨èº«è½ Portable Player 2001https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdbdhRCDrVoä½ é€™å€‹ç”·äºº 2001https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPSewCrcWdk大日å Big Day 2000 星期五檔案 Friday File 2000 失憶周末 Memory Loss Weekend 2000https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4Wffn7fjBQ花花宇宙 Paisley Galaxy 2000chttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g349fOGNoO4戀愛情色 Love Colours 1999https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBtlbKGO95g

laiwingnang 85
^ I personally don't really mind, I'm not a fan of cpop these days anyways... This time, I'm going to go with someone who is more old school/traditional in terms of music style. Sally Yeh, who is of Taiwanese origin. She released a few albums in the early 80s in Taiwan..and they were old school pop /folk music that was popular in Taiwan at the time. It wasn't that successful, so she decided to turn to hong kong for her career break and she succeeded and became an a-list singer in all of cpop. Her music is on the traditional side, a mix of western folk pop & ballad along with chinese traditional and folk music. She pretty much had the adult market cornered in the 80s/early 90s while not very popular with the younger demographic..By the mid 90s, her career is on the rocks and she took a more pop route and even tried to do covers of toni braxton songs, it didn't last long. She became irrelevant soon after.Although she was one of the best selling artist during the late 80s/early 90s, Because of her more mature target , she is now pretty much forgotten unlike most of 80s/90s cantopop divas who still has an active fanbase... I personally like some of her early 90s music, it's fully of emotions and quite pretty.零時å分 10 past midnight 1984https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWin8NY2kdM長夜 My Love Good Night 1985https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kCV-IyBcnYå¯’ç…™ç¿ 1986https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbyfuAz7Y0k甜言蜜語 sweet honeyed words 1987https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZSU6H66uog黎明ä¸è¦ä¾† Dawn, do not come 1987 ç¥ç¦ Blessings 1988https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_I0vg-WIfM最愛是我家 Love my home the most 1989https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=um30QIJ8BFMçé‡ take care 1990https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdI3hKR4iPg諾言 promise 1990https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKRUfl_u0E8ç„šå¿ƒä»¥ç« burn heart with fire 1990 秋去秋來 autumn goes and comes 1990https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kU0gZB3XpE尋覓 Search 1990https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fmSn0RYiHY瀟ç‘走一回 (mandarin) 1992https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbRUsYtZ2fs紅塵 Red Dust 1992https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2sNV0k-IJg情人知己 Lover, Confidant 1992https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDIYZsjNlVE愛到分離ä»æ˜¯æ„› (duet with George Lam) 1992https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndHirw838Xo曾經心痛 1993(mandarin)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxZRB7_kfr0女人的眼淚 Woman's Tears 1993 (mandarin)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IjQv0cAQZoä½ ä»Šå¤©è¦èµ° You must go today 1993https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRnAS1r_jBY and here goes sally yeh with her take on american pop https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PUyjLh0mQk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMccG4wILXY
