BORN's Spiral Lie PV Causes Controversy In International Media

Japanese Visual Kei band BORN released their "Spiral Lie" PV in February last year and it seems to be causing quite a stir now among numerous international media sites and centers.

The PV is being blamed as the cause of a rejuvenation of an eyeball licking trend known as 'worming' or by the scientific term, oculolinctus. In the latter part of the PV, BORN's vocalist, Ryoga, is strapped to a chair while a woman proceeds to lick his eye. Doctors warn against the practice saying the tongue has a multitude of bacteria and the act may cause infections in the eye, such as conjunctivitis and chlamydia. It also carries the risk of corneal abrasion and corneal ulcers.

News about the fetish and the PV that is believed to have brought it back went viral after the Chinese news site Shanghaiist reported that a number of Japanese students recently began showing up to school wearing eye patches because of eye infections.

Apparently, worming has a similar sensation to toe-sucking, because of the high number of nerve endings in the cornea, which make the eyeballs very sensitive. Dr Robert Cykiert, from the New York University Langone Medical Center told ABC News: ‘When you get licked on the eye, you’re transferring dangerous bacteria. It is a very dangerous trend to say the least.’

After hearing about the controversy, BORN's vocalist, Ryoga, wrote about the matter on his blog:

The PV of Spiral Lie seems to have become a hot topic in the world news lately. It's being reported on by a lot of news sites. Why at this point in time? People say the act of licking the eye is popular among the young people of Japan and the reason is the Spiral Lie PV. I laughed a bit, it was already around. I thought it was a sexual cult activity. Maybe In-store events will be eye-licking instead of handshaking. That's what I thought this afternoon. Ha-ha.

You can check out the PV below. The eyeball licking scene comes up around the 3:30 mark.

Shouldn't be surprised that Spiral Lie by Born has caught the attention of international media but it's one of the least problematic or troublesome videos this year. Was expecting everyone to focus and make a much bigger deal over Aien Kien by Kiryu because they essentially spent the majority of their video beheading Mahiro. Ryoga couldn't have handled the backlash or controversy any better then he did. His humor is spot on and got quite a laugh out of maybe in store events will be eye licking instead of hand shakes. Ryoga's response is quite brilliant and the visuals for Spiral Lie are spot on.
