South Korean Society and their self-loathing.

I'm Always Right.

Recommended Posts

Are South Korea one of the most self-loathing Nations in the World? I believe so, or at least they are getting there.

Why else do a huge majority of Korean people get PS to the point of becoming completely unrecognisable?

The Beauty Standard in Korea is extremely limited to the point that contestants for Miss Korea are barely distinguishable. There is no uniqueness that is appreciated in South Korea. I've even heard that many Korean Women burn all their photos after getting Plastic Surgery...that kind of freaked me out.

Yes, it is true that Surgery is very common in the Western world too, but it's not near enough on the scale as South Korea. People in the West often get Boob Jobs/ Lip Fillers and not Jaw Reshaping, Eyelid Surgery, and even Forehead Implants. Their Plastic Surgery choices often do NOT make them look like they have completely changed their race.

I have no problem with Plastic Surgery but in this case, it's becoming an addictive curse, how else are Koreans going to explain themselves to their Children when they realise that they look nothing like their parents?

Furthermore, in so many cases they simply don't need Plastic Surgery but get it anyways to please everyone. Not getting PS means you constantly are insulted and compared to other beautiful people who, having had Plastic Surgery are considered 'prettier' or more 'handsome' because they fit the Societal Beauty Standard.

I'm in no way an expert on Korean Culture, nor am I a Korean but I have observed this for a few years and it honestly upsets me.

The reason I made this thread is because I've heard a ton of International KPOP fans Online and in person tell me how they aren't pretty because they don't fit the Korean Beauty Standard, like wtf? You're beautiful and unique as you are and you, as an outsider shouldn't have to deal with this messed up envision of beauty. Just enjoy the Entertainment.  :raep:

Many nations are self-loathing to their physical appearances and themselves, whether it's extreme or mild.

Especially those that live in first world countries. They have more time to care about their outer appearances, rather than survival since pretty much is given to them, and they have nothing to do but loathe themselves. It's saddening when I see people like this, and they're unhappy..

Actually, I used to be like that, but after starting foruming, I started to like myself and my culture. I'm happy as of now. Beauty doesn't give you happiness mates; you have to think happily. :3

I don't have much to add, but I agree. It's getting to the point where people outside of Korea have a warped image of what Koreans really look like. I live in Toronto, and our large Korean population look nothing like Korean celebs, but they aren't ridiculed for not getting PS. There's no reason for them to get PS because they don't need to look a certain way to get a job, or to be accepted. They do tend to wear a lot of makeup and eyelid glue to emulate exotic features, but PS doesn't seem to be a big thing amongst them.

I would say even beyond Korea, a lot of Asian societies are self-loathing but a lot of that is also due to the culture. It's not uncommon for parents and friends to point out all the physical flaws they find in you, and I imagine people eventually get sick of it enough to have procedures such as PS done to shut people up

What's scary is that beauty is even considered in the work world. You have to attach a picture to your resume. I don't know if this is common in many places but not accepting someone based on how they look is insane.

yeah i agree, attaching a picture to your resume is the first ive heard! your already competing with others due to how good your resume is and the fact that you even have to attach a photo of yourself

gheez, no pressure eh

I just wanna add that I just came back from Seoul a couple of day ago, and there are tons of people WITHOUT plastic surgery. As much as there are people who got things done, there are as many without it.

But Koreans (according to my observations), definitely do care a lot about the way they look. All of them dress really nicely all the time, and ALL the women, wear THICK makeup and lipstick from highschool age or so, all the way up to 70+ year old grandmas. Even tons of middle schoolers wear makeup and lipstick.

idk if this is off topic, but yeah

I think it has more to do with the competitiveness of the society, not self-loathing.

They openly recognize that being attractive and conforming gives very clear benefits.

I'm afraid it's beyond competitiveness.

People bring it here, too. Being attractive is one thing BUT: What other nation values the beauty ideals OPPOSITE of their natural ethnic type, so much?    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2610231/Plastic-surgery-South-Korea-good-people-travelling-home-surgery-need-CERTIFICATES-prove-are.html   article-2610231-1D421C1000000578-11_634x   To be just, SK

To be just, SK has the BEST freaking plastic surgeons, so, oftentimes, if someone (especially an idol) was born good-looking, they only slightly enhance their features while keeping them unique.

Many Koreans have big faces and flat cheekbones - their ideal beauty is strictly a small face only with no prominent cheekbones.

A big number of Koreans tend to have a square-ish jaw - they thnk that only a "V-line" is truly beautiful.

Koreans, as Asian people, tend to have single eyelids and a somewhat flat nose - and they think double eyelids and high nose is the ideal.

Heck, it's becoming common for Korean moms to recommend plastic surgery to their kids, especially girls.

Koreans can have skin ranging from white to dark-ish, and white is favored.

Even guys!!! TVXQ's Chgangmin, the runway-model-looking guy! once told he's kinda dark, and Taemin got his skin bleached, and EXO keeps making fun of Kai's dark complection, idiots.

The fully "natural"-looking celebrities would be e.g. AkMu and CL (the lady is bashed so much for being "ugly")

Or, Lydia Paek, amazing voice, and what I see is unique Asian beauty - not really popular:   tumblr_meuo9cmxj41rhz3hco1_500.gif

I do agree with what you are saying.  But is it unique to Korea?  The beauty standards in the Western world isn't even vaguely close to the average American.

Unfortunately, I think the problem is actually business and money.  The beauty&health industry is worth so much and the companies will do anything to make people think they need their products.  That's why the beauty standard is so absurd and unattainable.  More insecure people means more money for them.

I honestly feel for you.

I like that they are having self-confidence and living their lives better because of PS.

But, I'm afraid that one day, everyone in SK will just look-alike.

They should not just drown in that ideals, SK must embrace all kinds of other beauty.

Living in SK, I can definitely say the number of people with ps is far less than those without it. Looking good has more to do with Korea's competitive nature and long history of valuing beauty than it does with self-loathing. Heck, SK is one of the most nationalistic nations on Earth, and still strongly believes in 민족.
