[teens stories] ISN'T SNOW WHITE THAT IS ABOUT TO COME OUT WAY WORSE THAN LITTLE MERMAID?

I don't understand how there is an "agenda" with the casting of  this actress because she is a white women, she is in no way a person of color because she is partially Hispanic. These remakes are usually forgotten a year after they premiere anyway so the cruel racism that these actresses face isn't justifiable in the slightest. I do however wish that Disney would produce more content  instead of recycling old stories, and there have been so many, "Snow White" live action remakes so who really asked for this?

Yeah, let's just conveniently ignore the fact that the characters in this story (and the origin of the story itself) are emphatically EUROPEAN. If we ever invent time travel during our lifetimes, I want you to go back to 16th century Germany and try explaining to them what the hell a "BIPOC" is.

didn't know all europeans were white

the level of melatonin is irrelevant...but why bother using snow white when you're just gonna scrap everything...no dwarves, the prince becomes a guidance counselor, no kiss because sexual assault...

I don't know, did you lie? And by that I mean are you actually playing dumb or are you not playing? Because it's impossible for these particular characters to be anything other than white Europeans, and it doesn't take a genius to reach this conclusion.

I'm using the perfectly valid "it's Europe!!" argument because the story takes place in post-medieval Central Europe, which is not only extremely pertinent but also equally evident if you have ever actually SEEN Disney's animated version... or really any version. Snow White? Like it or not, but she was named that for an actual reason. Her skin being "white as snow" is literally a plot point. I'm sorry you think these are minor details, but they are not.

Would you have been fine with the live-action remake of Mulan starring a white woman? Maybe Scarlett Johansson? No? Didn't think so. Don't try to make me sound racist just because I don't want a nonsensically unfaithful adaptation due to something as basic as casting. You don't get to use the "she's a fish!!" excuse here.

I get that point, it's completely valid, but some comments here clearly aren't upset because of how much it changed.

Yup, what bothers me in these conversations is that people tend to forget that Europe exists. European countries have a diverse history and culture, you know...

But of course the male lead has to be your typical blue-eyed white guy. I can't be the only one who notice this double standard?

Outside of Iberia, there were a few hundred at best. How many of those do you think had local royalty as a love interest? 🙄

that's because for some time, there has been systematic effort from western media and politicians to erase white culture. racism against white race is real and it's to the point that people of other races are noticing it.

posting this video here is beyond cringe

Who clowned me, smh. I said what I said! It's literally not Snow White at this point. Like, they've changed too many things for it to still even resemble the original product.

And anyway, normally, idgaf about a white character being changed to a different skin color (bc why would I??), but the movie is literally called SNOW WHITE. They literally talk about how she has skin as WHITE as SNOW. This is one of the few cases where changing the character's race makes 0 sense.

As someone who has defended Halle Bailey repeatedly for The Little Mermaid, in Snow White's case, the character's fair skin is a crucial part of the character and a motif of the story. We can be flexible and put a fair skinned character that is not necessarily white (they can be pale East Asian), and even that would be stretching it bc "Snow WHITE", you know.

Overall, leave characters whose race is crucial to the story and historical characters untouched. Or... start making newer diverse work so actors are not subjected to racism.

These constant remakes are blatant cash grabs. If A24 didn't exist Hollywood would be shit.

Is Snow White's race crucial to the story? No, it's not. It's just the reason behind her name. It has no actual impact on the plot. The Evil Queen wants to kill SW because of her beauty. Her white skin just happens to be a part of that beauty, but it doesn't necessarily have to be. Skin white as snow, lips red as blood, hair black as ebony, it's just a cute little fairytale thing.

Just like Little Red Riding Hood. The name is only important because it makes the character recognizable and iconic.  But it has zero importance to the plot.

This is silly. Snow White takes place in a fictional kingdom. The name of this kingdom, this country, this region, was never mentioned in the story. Furthermore, what does the race or nationality matter to the plot of the story? A story like Disney's Pocahontas is one where the race of the characters matter.

With Snow White, it does not. The story could be told with a million different detail changes. Hell, Snow White could be a mermaid and the plot wouldn't suffer.

Naw, maybe @Zack Morris was right. Probably just good ol' unconscious bias (or conscious bias in disguise) happening here. Keep our European princesses European, please!

you know Disney is gonna do a live action Pocahontas and they're gonna cast a black actress again...and you'll have the same people defending the decision saying "who says Pocahontas can't be black?"
