60% of Korean fans like only one group and 75% of global fans like more than one group

When asked about their reasons for becoming fans, 64% of Korean fans said stage videos and 76% of global fans said songs. 38% of Korean fans and 50% of global fans said they became fans through their idols’ own content

1. There are other idols that I like, but I only support one group

2. What is certain is that fans are not as loyal as fans of previous generations

3. I have never liked more than two idol groups

4. From the 1st to the 4th generation, I like one group per generation

5. I have my favorite group and I like female idols too

6. Singing and performing has a great influence abroad, over time, the members who sing well and perform well are becoming more and more popular than the members pushed by the company

7. I’ve only liked one group for 10 years

8. I’m only interested in my favorite group… I don’t have feelings for anything else…

9. 1 male idol group and 1 female idol group

10. I like all female idols

this is nothing new tbh, fandom culture in Korea and abroad has always been markedly different because Korean fans view liking more than one group as a betrayal of the other, while international fans don't. the reasoning actually makes sense imo because international fans are more focused on streaming in terms of how they consume music and have fewer opportunities to see idols perfm, while Korean fans are very used to stage videos and MVs as a means of consuming music. you still see idols to this day playing balance games about whether they'd prefer to see a fan carrying the lightstick of another group and such, so the mentality that you are a fan of only one group is still the same.

I’m glad I’m not a fan under the rigid self-imposed rules SK fans have, so that I can enjoy more than one group. Plus I think a lot of i-fans of K-pop being adults means we have the spending power to like/ support more than one group and not be limited.

When a local fan (either South Korean or expatriate) can attend multiple music show tapings during a promotional period, I guess it becomes sort of like when serious sports fans regularly attend games through a season?

I just wanna say... it was only in 2014 maybe? International fans started to really open up to the idea of liking more than one group...

Bitch throw back to the fucking times I had to be telling bitches on OH that it's okay to like more than one group 😭😭 like nah international fans really had that "only one" no BoA mindset and don't get me started on the Twitter stans honey...woo to the fucking weeeee you was a traitor whore if you were even caught liking a pic of another group 😭😭😭

And don't get me wrong there were some who liked more than one group (duh obviously) but girl today's kpop world

A brand new wooooooooorrrlllddddd in my jasmine voice. The girls are doing way better than the 2014 girlies and extremely better than the 2008 girlies (let me fucking tell ya insanity bitch...)

My money lining their pockets proves I'm loyal.

Never thought of it that way, but it makes sense.

I would guess part of it is that in Korea, Idol music is a subculture, like Trot, ballads and Indie are much more popular overall, it's also why on singing shows they always make a big deal of being surprised the idols can sing (well a few of them), because Idol groups are fanclubs/social groups first to the general public's mind. There are definitely stans internationally too where it's all about the parasocial relationship, but as K-pop has expanded, in a lot of places it's just another pop group, and so it gets treated as just another pop song, you throw it on your playlist after you hear it on TikTok, and if you like the next album you add it, maybe you don't. Like I would guess in Korea if you asked them if they liked more than one ballad singer or Trot singer... the numbers would be different.
