listen i don't know what education is like in South Korea, but would she truly not know about what a Swastika is? esp since the shirt seems to be her personal possession and not the fault of a stylist. i know it's a Sex Pistols shirt but......it's 2023 you can't be like "yeah I'm wearing a Swastika to be a punk"

I second this, in this day and age how can she not know. Especially since this isn’t the first time a Kpop idol has been in trouble over this.

It’s nice she apologized, but I’m still major side-eyeing her for buying that shirt herself and wearing it…

Also because I’m a punk and regularly listen to this music.

Sid was a terrible person. Most punks do NOT wear that symbol. Yes there are some that do but those are neo-nazi punks. Punks have been trying to kick that group to the group.

Punks hate neo-nazi punks. We feel that is not what punk is about. It’s not about hate. It’s just about being you. Neo-nazi punks are not welcomed to punk shows.

also idols that get into punk need to stop idolizing Sid. He murdered Nancy. Get into bands like Social Distortion. The lead singer fights Nazis!

like.....i'm from another Asian country and we absolutely learnt about Hitler and the Holocaust in our school curriculm as part of WW2 education so i find it very hard to believe at no point does South Korean education not at least touch upon the fact that Japan was allied with Nazi Germany and what that was about. South Korea is one of the most educated countries in the world, it's insulting to say "Koreans wouldn't know", it was goddamn WORLD WAR TWO not some random Western historical event that Asian people don't know about. and there's so many famous movies about the Holocaust that i find it hard to believe even if she never paid attention in school, she wouldn't have at least known.

i don't think she's a Neo-Nazi, but my guess is she probably thought she was being artsy and edgy and a "punk" by wearing the shirt, which isn't great and shows she's not terribly bright, but well. i suppose that's the silver lining.

lmao are you seriously clowning me for saying it was dumb of her to wear a swastika shirt

she probably didn't see it as a big deal which is deplorable and i genuinely hope chaeyoung (and just anyone) starts being more careful with fashion, like i get it, the shirt may look cute to you and fit whatever style you're going for but was it too hard to skip it? look for a similar shirt?

unfortunately I genuinely believe that a lot of koreans truly don't know, which is beyond awful because then stuff like this happens

there's no excuse though, this is disgusting and needs to stop

I really don't think they know either, the amount of stuff most countries don't know about know, what Americans would consider World History is interesting

i think her apology would have come across better if she simply said she wasn't sensitive enough to what that symbol stands for than to say she didn't know what the symbol means. girl it's 2023, documentaries on youtube are free.

Fans say that's her favorite shirt and has worn it before?? Wow. She doesn't care and will more than likely wear it again. She's a grown woman from South Korea(this is taught in their curriculum btw), how doesn't she know what that symbol means? There's no excuse for this. This is an ongoing cultural trend with idols wearing it 'hidden' on clothes to going as far as fantasizing about Nazi soldiers/or expressing Nazi sentiments themselves 'pretending' they didn't know. They just got comfortable.

There's a lot to unpack here.

For starters, she knows what a Nazi swastika is. Don't try telling me she doesn't. If that were actually true, then it would mean the South Korean education system is woefully inadequate, because yes, World War II is extremely relevant WORLD history. It directly affected Korea itself, which was oppressed by a Nazi ally. Do you think she would walk around Korea with an Imperial Japanese symbol on her shirt just to be "punk?" No? Me neither. But apparently the Nazis' victims are fair game.

It may also be worth noting that she was wearing this same exact shirt in an earlier IG post from her time in LA, except it was covered up by a short cardigan. Is that just a coincidence? Or did she know exactly what she was wearing, smartly covered it up, and then still made the mistake of exposing it on a more recent post? I know her fans will be quick to jump to her defense with "she didn't know," but I'm having trouble believing in coincidences with this happening only a few days after the Qanon shirt fiasco. You won't see me contesting that she's not the sharpest tool in the shed, but even if we accept the idea that she's just an innocent ignoramus who will wear anything without knowing what it symbolizes, you'd think she would at least exercise some caution immediately following a similar clothing-related controversy, but no, here we are again less than a week later, and this time it's her own personal wardrobe under scrutiny. Was she even oblivious to what the previous shirt represented, or did she purposely pick it out? Frankly I'm not even sure anymore. Especially with her never addressing it.

The fact that she's not even an actual anarchist "punk" ala the Sex Pistols (complete scumbags, btw), and probably has no idea what they even stood for, only makes this all the more cringe. She's really just a quirky Korean art girl who is using iconography that's out of her depth in an attempt to establish her own edgy persona or "concept" in a very phony, Kpop-esque manner (and one that's completely at odds with her group's image.) This may sound like gatekeeping, but the people who are actually into that kind of stuff for real would eat her alive. And on the off-chance that her beliefs genuinely align with those of someone whom you'd expect to run around wearing swastikas or right-wing extremist merchandise, that's all the worse. Either way, she needs to take several chill pills. It might be in Twice's best interests if she takes a hiatus at this point. Their upcoming tour is too important to have a bunch of bad press attached to it.

PS: That apology? Complete shit. JYP should've made her done better. I mean this is the same company that had Tzuyu film a hostage video for doing nothing wrong, but Chaeyoung fucks up for real and gets to make the most brief, effortless apology ever? 😬

idk who's trying to say the sex pistols are in any way representative of punk in this day and age but simply that is incorrect

definitely! i don't think she's really a punk but rather she thought she was being artsy and cool and "punk" by wearing a shirt with old bands on it, like people who buy thrifted band t-shirts to seem intellectual. it's not an excuse but i suspect that's how this happened in which case......she needs to maybe research a movement rather than trying to adopt it via consumerism (and isn't that just the issue with our culture nowadays huh.....)

The shirt is very rare and hard to find so I think she likes the punk aesthetics.

people need to stop idolizing them! Plus there’s better punk bands to idolize that don’t try to shock people like that.

Tbh I don't think this is about her not knowing about the swastika but she probably wore it because it was Sid.

There was a show about The Sex Pistols last year and Louis Patridge played Sid. It flopped but a lot of teenage girls were romanticizing the hell out of Sid because they were fans of Louis.

Glad she apologized but her apology was incredibly short and blunt. Like others said, WW2 was a WORLD WIDE issue that affected millions and millions of people, this isn't some niche topic that goes relatively undiscussed. Especially considering other idols have gotten in trouble / faced backlash for wearing swastikas and even wearing clothing that resembles nazi uniforms. I find it incredibly hard to believe she didn't recognize a swastika, like come on now. Use your fucking brain !!

I think the fact that both apologies specify 'tilted swastika' means that they're trying to imply she thought it was the buddhist swastika which is not tilted and still displayed in buddhist temples across Asia including SK. It's a big stretch of an explanation bc why would Chae think a british punk shirt had a buddhist symbol on it? I think she just assumed that since it was from a popular band whatever was on it couldn't be that offensive. Basically 'everyone else is doing it/no one around me said anything' mentality which is dumb.

Apparently it's rare on the english internet but easier to find knockoff versions in Asia, fans are guessing she got hers for like $20 bucks on a Japanese punk site that she's bought other clothes from. Not that it makes it better that she wore it but seems like she's less of a die-hard Sid fan than she would be if she bought it for whatever insane price it's at on ebay.

That shirt shouldn’t even be sold
