Bang Shi Hyuk warns that K-Pop's growth is slowing

Article: Bang Shi Hyuk, "K-Pop's growth is slowing, this is the start of a crisis... won't be resolved even with BTS' return"

1. [+78, -5] Open up a composer/writer competition with a good prize. There's only so much advancement you can achieve with the same singing and dancing competitions all the time.

2. [+62, -8] He's right.. I've always wondered what's going to happen to K-Pop after BTS... Sorry to say but no group has risen to their level yet, and it feels like K-Pop has hit its peak already..

3. [+53, -12] I'm more worried about your health than the health of K-Pop!

4. [+28, -3] All the songs sound like the last song, that group looks like this group, there's nothing unique anymore... Maybe I'm just an old fart now but I can't tell anyone apart anymore.

5. [+22, -4] K-Pop's lack of foundation is showing. Genres like jazz, blues, and rock are the foundation of music, and yet all of that is missing from "Korean Pop".

6. [+7, -0] I do sense that Hallyu is slowing down, but that's how trends work, they all come and go. Nothing lasts forever, just like back when Hong Kong movies were all the rage.

7. [+8, -2] Idols of large groups needed to have ended with BTS' generation. Instead, we've had an influx of the same plastic faces coming out in hoards... how do you expect K-Pop to grow from that?

8. [+3, -1] I think the past 10 years of our culture and economy have been on the rise and we're now standing at its peak. Without BTS, there isn't really a group that defines K-Pop for us anymore, and we haven't had a movie make the rounds since 'Parasite' and 'Minari'... or 'Squid Game' in the drama industry.

9. [+3, -1] It was all just a flash in the pan, and we got what we wanted out of it. K-Pop's over unless we come up with something new. There was no way that groups of kids who can't sing or have any other form of talent other than slinking around on stage was going to last for so long anyway.

10. [+2, -0] He's right... BTS is a passing trend, and I don't think we should be expecting any explosive news to come from K-Pop for much longer.

11. [+2, -0] What lasts forever? Hallyu is a passing trend like anything else in the world. Look how bored we get of celebrities who don't change up their image every few months...

and yet HYBE debuted Newjeans and Le Sserafim, they are part of the problem themselves.

Slown down happens in every industry. They need to worry about whether K-pop has integrated into other countries' cultures enough to have staying power. Think of how anime and manga became a part of western culture. But the demand has to come from the public, not just the fans.

I think the only group with a sliver of a chance to get half of BTS' popularity is NewJeans.

Le Sserafim has some older members too tho. And I kinda like the maknae and unnies dynamic that they have.

But yeah I kinda agree with him (altho BTS's promotion wasn't that great either in 2021-2022). Kpop has always focused on visuals and trends, but these days its so oversaturated. Everyone tries to follow the same trends and styling. (like for example how New Jeans started doing this more chill y2k teenager concept, but then just barely a few month later TripleS released a track with a very similar styling, dance style and mv direction). I actually do like a lot of the newer music, but I find it harder to get into new groups because they barely have time to build their identity before moving on to the next trend. I think a lot of international fans are put off by that. I have noticed that int fans like groups like Dreamcatcher or Mamamoo, who tend to stick to their specific sound and styling.

true maybe that's why they're so successful but don't have huge fandom yet (which is awsome in my opinion)

tbh (other than cookie), newjeans's music fits their age and is GREAT! , also their whole concept respects their ages

seriously Hype boy is one of the best kpop songs in recent years and ditto grew on me  a lot

but still, I'm against debuting minors even if the music is great 😭

lessearfim are not that young tho? maybe the maknae is , but the rest are fine no?

which is why they stan groups like newjeans, ive, and inevitably babymonster 🤔

In reality, the ones complaining about the age of new groups are just a minority...even for the ones who do complain, most will still stan them and stream their music.

Do people not realize idols aren't actually getting younger, they're the ones getting older? 2008 liners are 15 this year, idols that age have been debuting ever since the idol industry became a thing in the 90s.. It's a whole other discussion whether or not they should be debuting, but acting like it's a new change in the industry is just silly lol

Exactly. I'm 35 now. When I first got in kpop,  I was 23. I remember very young idols debuting. This isn't some brand new thing. We are all just getting older. Does it make it right that they're still debuting children? But we have to realize at some point most of the new groups aren't in our age group.

Nick Carter literally debuted in BSB when he was a child. That was in the early 90s. It's all still wrong but, guys, we are just getting older.

Basically, and most of the groups people mention aren't even children.. People have brought up Newjeans, IVE and Le Sserafim in this thread alone, but most of the members in these groups are actually adults. The only member in IVE who isn't is Leeseo who is 16, Eunchae and Haerin are turning 17 and Danielle will turn 18 this year. Hyein is the only member I would call a child, and as I said, she isn't particularly young for idol standards either. Most of us who have been here for a while just aren't the target audience anymore and it's ok to admit that even if it sucks! I don't believe minors debuting is a good or a particularly healthy thing, but that's just how the industry has always been and will continue to be.. I would get the outrage if every new group that debuted was basically GP Basic all over again, but the average debut ages have really not changed that much over the years. People just look at years like 2006 or 2008 and go huh? without realizing they aren't 10 years old anymore

I've moved on to jpop groups with VERY few members (2 or 3). Groups with less members all have to be reasonably talented because any lack of talent will not be hidden by a huge amount of group members like in Kpop groups with 4-12 members. Huge kpop groups have so many filler members. It puts a burden on their music and sound. I don't like the choppiness that comes with hearing so many different vocals in one kpop song. I want more groups where there is a main vocal and the rest do the harmonies. It's that cohesiveness they are lacking. We also need more variety like we used to have in the early 2000's.

Kpop lacks groups that have cohesion and consistent image.

Future of kpop depends on Japan, Wich is still biggest market for Korean groups, aside from BTS and mb BP??. I doubt that Japan will close their scene for kpop idols in near future, until they find a way to localize production.

The first comment is a great idea, I'd watch the hell out of a composing competition. Something has to change, it's been the same formula over and over for the past decade. Kpop got boring years ago

this already exists, it was a mbc show called "god of creation" (창작의 신). But it flopped. I think I'm the only intl fan knowing its existence

there was also KBS' Listen Up Project last year which had different producers compete against each other and got idols/other singers/bands to sing the tracks. it was pretty successful! never got eng subbed though

when was exactly that? they were always on top of the charts but by no means where the only ones, even groups from less popular companies top the charts back then
