Rolling Stone: Blackpink’s Jennie has barely any airtime on HBO’s The Idol

Recommended Posts

Levinson then upped the cast’s star power even more throughout filming, with the additions of Bodies Bodies Bodies breakout Rachel Sennott, Dan Levy, Hank Azaria, Moses Sumney, and megaproducer Mike Dean. Casting K-pop superstar Jennie of Blackpink was the biggest get for Levinson. Under the show’s hashtag and teaser trailers, her stans steamrolled comment sections to cheer on the singer in her first acting role. But crew members claim Jennie has barely any air time and an inconsequential story arc. “It was like three or four lines per episode for her,” a production source says. “They didn’t let her talk that much. Her job was to sit there [and] look pretty, basically.”

That's not even the biggest thing. It was a rape fantasy for Sam Levison. I really hope this show doesn't air and, if it does, it should flop because Sam is a sick, perverted man.

Not only him but The Weeknd too. He was the reason the original was scrapped and that creep was let in.

i was just reading that RS article and those details along with this is definitely getting a big ol' YIKES from me:

Quote

A report from April blamed the show’s overhaul on Tesfaye, who was reportedly unhappy that the story was focusing too much on Depp’s character, according to Deadline. A source with knowledge seconds that Tesfaye was the reason behind the shakeup, wanting to tone down the cult aspect of the storyline and pivot into something else entirely, dropping the “feminist lens” through which the show was being told as a result. “It was like the Weeknd wanted one show that was all about him — Sam was on board with that,” another source explains to Rolling Stone

i've read on a lot of gossip forums online that the weeknd is a trash human and i guess he's about to confirm that in 4k

Jennie's fans for the next few months, after hyping the hell out of her big acting debut:

From what I've seen on Twitter, they're now on a mission to take down both Sam Levison and The Weeknd.

They’re happy that she doesn’t have any lines because of the story of Sam and The Weeknd being gross men is out.

Jennie still parties with that "gross man" who casted her in real life, so I wouldn't be too thrilled either way if I were them.

This show always gave me icky vibes from the first trailer. I'm still surprised that Jennie wanted to (or was allowed to) act on a show that presents the music industry in such a negative light. Even if it's just a small role, it's also very peculiar how a Kpop idol just happened to end up on an American show called The Idol. I mean we (Americans) don't even call singers "idols,"* so... that's weird. 🤷‍♂️

*American Idol was a British import.

Really? Where? What is it about him? 👀

to try to summarise:

- rumoured to have cheated on bella hadid with her ex bestie, simi of simihaze (them people jennie's always hanging with in LA)

- cokehead

- misogynistic, homophobic lyrics (check out lost in the fire controversy but big ol' trigger warning on that if you do, it's very unpleasant)

i don't have a source this is just what i see people saying about him in the comment sections on gossip forums. it's very consistent feedback lol

When I first saw the trailer I was thinking her role was going to be small as well. She's good promo for the show that's why she was included in the trailer.

Well, we know the powers that govern YGE approve of people treating women like they're subhuman. This is just another example of that.

Her role was always going to be small. As for the nature of the program, not up my alley at all but I don’t think trying to cancel it will bring anything to the table.

I always knew this show was going to be a hot mess but I'm amazed that Sam Levinson manages to prove himself as even more of a creep. That's almost an accomplishment.

The ratio on The Weeknd's tweet is funny though.

Lol it's not just a gossip that he's a cokehead. He openly confirmed Can't Feel My Face was about that white powder.

oh for real like if you look at the weeknd's lyrics you can pretty much see he's not a good person and sadly there doesn't seem to be much separation of the art and the artist with him, esp now i've just found out he started dating bella hadid when she was 18 and he was 25. ew.

i see across the internet a lot of people hand-wringing about jennie's involvement in this. i like jennie so this isn't hate but her mgmt have made it pretty clear in a lot of her career choices she's "not like other idols" by taking on quite edgy stuff for a woman idol. i'm a feminist so obvs i'm just "good for her" but seeing this in the light of kpop's purity culture and its expectations for woman, she's somewhat out the box. it's unfortunate her name will be tied to this but in her defence it seemed like it was a different show when she originally signed up for it.

what really needs a side-eye is her friendship with the weeknd and his associated circle imho.
