Bunshun Online Publishes Scoop on AKB48’s Okada Nana, Okada Responds

In an era where very few members of AKB48 are known to the public, Team A‘s Okada Nana is one of the few exceptions. A person who has largely grown up under the harsh lens of the public eye, she is known for her straightforward character and deeply personal connection with her fans.

It was therefore very shocking to many that the girl, characterized by an “honor student” personality and exploring her sexuality both on and off camera, would be caught in a scandal with actor Ino Hiroki in public.

Much of what was reported in Bunshun Online was extremely tame, with the report being that after her birthday livestream the two went out on a date looking at apartments with Okada‘s father joining the duo.

That being said, the harsh public reaction reflects much of the issues that come with being queer or an idol in the age of social media.

Many were quick to accuse Okada of violating the so called Love-ban rule despite multiple affirmations that it no longer applies to AKB48. Others quickly pointed out that this was a direct contradiction to statements she made in an earlier election years ago. In addition, despite never having said that she is only attracted to women and publicly stating that she does not see gender in romantic relationships, Okada was quickly accused of “queerbaiting”, a term used to accuse some of acting “gay for pay”.

In a private message to fans on her Mobame, Okada apologized for the scandal and asked that fans wait until she is ready to speak publicly both about the event and her sexuality.
