I'm going to preface this topic with the following:  this post is going to be more economics-centric than something I'd usually translate.  It deals with numbers relating to the Japanese music market as a whole rather than any specific release.  That said, if you're still interested, let's delve into things.

--

Today, Oricon revealed how the current year of music sales compares to the previous year.  On the whole (combining all sales categories), music sales in Japan are down 1.1% in comparison to the same period of time in 2013 (sales are down for the second year in a row).  The full breakdown is as follows:  Single sales are down 6.8%, Album sales are up 0.1%, DVD sales are down 12.2%, and Blu-ray sales are up 43.0% (combined, DVD and Blu-ray sales are up 1.1%).  Of note, this is the first time that Album sales have risen in the first half of the year since 2006 and the second year in a row that Single sales have fallen.  Oricon also suspects that the transition from DVD to Blu-ray sales will become far more pronounced in the coming years.  The amount of money earned by each segment of the Japanese music market will be laid out below.

Singles:  28.98 billion yen ($286,525,260.00)

Albums:  77.97 billion yen ($770,889,390.00)

DVDs:  25.09 billion yen ($248,064,830.00)

Blu-rays:  12.87 billion yen ($127,245,690.00)

___________________________________________

Total Sales:  144.91 billion yen ($1,432,725,170.00)

In addition, Oricon has also revealed the ranking of the record labels which have accrued the greatest amount of profit in the first half of 2014.  For the third year in a row, Avex Company tops the ranking with a commanding lead.  The only change to the makeup of the Top 10 this year is the entry of record label Toy's Factory at #10, thanks in large part to the strong performance of Bump of Chicken's new studio album "RAY" and the consistent releases by up-and-coming band SEKAI NO OWARI.  The full ranking, with earnings and percentages compared to the first half of 2013, can be found below.

get that money Avex  :datass:

wonder which were the Top 3 artists who made the biggest profit for them?

also does Johnny & Associate = J Storm?

The article names the Frozen Soundtrack, Kis-My-Ft2, Namie Amuro, and EXILE TRIBE as major pieces of Avex's success this year.  And yeah, J-Storm is the Johnny's label that handles Arashi, Hey! Say! JUMP, and TOKIO (and KAT-TUN under a sub-label).

I'm actually surprised albums sales are up. Not surprised about single sales being down though. Nobody really buys singles anymore besides idol fans.

It's only some of the JE acts. I know Arashi is on there but I forget who else. To be honest, Arashi would be enough to get in the top 10.

And Avex is probably EXILE, Namie, and TVXQ.
