4th gen arguably started in 2018-19

3rd gen arguably started in 2012

2nd gen around 2003

I think it should be 2018 but I see some Korean articles referring to groups from 2017 like ONF and The Boyz as 4th gen, so I'm not sure anyone really knows either. I think you can safely say 2012-2016 were 3rd gen at least.

For the most part it’s 2018, I can’t speak for ONF but I know the only reason The Boyz is considered 4th Gen is because they debuted in December 2017 which was close enough to 2018 for them to be considered 4th Gen.

I think ever since Kingdom I’ve seen people consider The Boyz as the start/the first of the 4th boy group generation.

I do sometimes see people talk about a grey area of a 3.5 generation though? Usually with groups like NCT/NCT 127 or G-idle (Though I think G-Idle should be considered 4th gen??)

I consider the start of 1st gen H.O.T debut

2nd gen TVXQ debut

3rd gen EXO debut

4th gen Aespa debut

yeah, I agree with this one the most

2018-2019 didn't feel like a change in the kpop industry, but 2020 did

I'd say 2018 for 4th gen. The Boyz are counted as 4th generation due to late 2017 debut (december), even ONF (August 2017) is sometimes considered 4th gen, but comparing TBZ and ONF debuts and early songs to representative 4th gen bgs like SKZ or Ateez, I wouldn't put them as 4th gen, but rather 3.5, same as Golcha too. Things did start changing, but too early to call 4th gen yet

After seeing all your answer, my conclusion is that for BG the 4 gen start around 2018.....BUT i see only BG as example ...where are the GG? And i only get answer for 4 GEN , what are the year for 3 gen, 2gen and 1 gen?.....i guess most K-pop stan don't know much about that era? My assumption that is for GG third gen start around 2014 and end at 2020....while second  en start around 2007 and end at 2013....but there are an unpopular opinion that for GG 2gen start around 2005...

2nd gen starting in 2005 for GGs is not surprising. CJSH The Grace debuted that year and were considered at the time as being the sister group of TVXQ! who is considered a 2nd gen BG. Other girl groups like Brown Eyed Girls and SeeYa came out in 2006, and they are considered 2nd gen, so...

To be honest, I don't know exactly when the generations really started and/or ended. But all I can say is:

  • Groups like Big Bang, Sistar and 2NE1 were really successful in 2012 during the summer. You could argue that the success also brought an end for 2nd gen but a new start for 3rd gen? AoA debuted in August 2012 and if they are considered as a 3rd gen GG, then it makes sense for 2nd gen to end sometime in 2012 or to have started earlier (before summer)?
  • And for 3rd gen, it ended in 2020? During the summer when How You Like That and Dynamite were released? Weeekly also debuted in June, and they are considered as a 4th gen GG. Also, aespa debuted in November but their debut was said to be delayed.

I don't know. Maybe I'm not making much sense at all.

Which mean third gen got a really short period of time? Since if second gen really start around 2005 then second gen is almost 9 years while third gen only around 7 years which kinda logical since most kpop contract last around 7 years only before they need to renew their contract. is second gen around 9 years and not 7 years like third gen then what about the first gen??? how long the era last???

1st gen should have started sometime in the 90s. Other acts were promoting actively at the time like Seo Taiji and the Boys (1992), Deux (1995), H.O.T. (1996). So I think it would be longer than the other gens - maybe 10 years?

I don't know about years, tbh. But yeah, I don't think the lengths of the generations are the same.

Second generation could've started earlier, like in 2004 since TVXQ! started promoting at the beginning of the year. 9 years sounds about right since that's almost 10 years anyway.

Which still showing that third gen have the less amount of time which only 7 years...or is it?? Maybe second gen start around 2004 and end up at 2010? Third gen start around 2011 and end up around 2017 and 4 gen start around 2018 and will end up around 2024??? Maybe?? Maybe??

Or maybe is first gen almost 10 years, while second gen almost 9 years maybe third gen also an almost 9 years??? Starting around 2014 up till 2022?

Or starting around 2011 and end up around 2019??  wait is this for bg or gg?? or they era are the same? :wut:

I don't think third gen started in 2011. It seems too early for a generation to transition into the third generation for both BGs and GGs. Apink are considered a Gen 2.5 group because they debuted in 2011. They are also included alongside Girl's Day and Sistar who debuted in 2010. But I won't lie to you if I say that Apink feel more to me like a 3rd gen group than other groups that started from 2nd gen. I also think they adapted really well to performing with the 3rd gen since their debut in 2011 would mean they would have another years worth of experience in performing.

Wikipedia says 3rd gen for GGs started in 2012. I used to think it started in 2013/2014 because that was when I felt the transition. But now I believe it could have actually started much earlier in 2012. Just not 2011.

i still would say it's 2018 for ggs, not 2020. while aespa and stayc did debut in 2020, other groups considered 4th gen like gidle, loona or fromis 9 have been around since 2018. izone debuted in 2018 as well, and as far as i know they're included in 4th gen too. making its start as 2020 would also leave itzy out of the bracket, and for a while they were the most successful 4th gen gg, even if their latest releases aren't doing as well

me too i thought for GG their third gen start around 2014 because red velvet gap with fx....

well...if wiki say that so be it....i guess third gen for gg start in 2012 then......it goes will well with the BG as well , with all that exo and bts era ....

and it also goes well with that 7 years contract soo...we will end up getting 4 gen GG around 2019 ....so it kinda understandable when some say gidle and everglow is 4 gen thou since they debut around 2018 ...while itzy for surely a 4 gen gg and some say 2020 is the years for 4 gen as well...have you notice?? most 2 gen idol are born on average in the year 1989 to 1994

while third gen gg born in 1995 to 1999 while 4 gen gg born in 2000 to 20004 with few little exceptions  that goes way beyond year 2004 example idol that born 2008...etc....

Yeah, the members in 3rd gen BGs and GGs are mostly born between 1991 and 2000. For 4th gen, they tend be born between 2001 and 2009...

It all becomes very subjective when we assign certain groups who debuted during the transition years as belonging to only one gen. I usually think those groups who debuted during the years of transition as being in their own category? It's not mutually exclusive to know that a group like IZ ONE can compete with groups in the 3rd gen but also have members like Yujin and Wonyoung in IVE, a 4th gen group...

I don't even know what I'm saying anymore lol...
