An observation about SM songs

1.) SM loves harmonies.

Good:  I think its really great because it adds to the intricacy of their productions. It also showcases the talents of their vocal line. I think oftentimes, this aspect of SM songs is quite overshadowed.

example:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmMjeI8SiY0

Notice how Luna (singlehandedly doing the harmony slay a lil bb gurl) sounds so glorious starting at 1:31 on the background

Mr.Mr. also has some nice harmonization during the chorus, SHINee's Lucifer has killer one towards the end of the song, Exo's Love Love Love is another example too (earth air water fire), TVXQ's Spellbound too

Bad: These intricate details do not translate to their actual performances.  There are some kpop groups who harmonize during their lives but with sm, they create such wonderfully intricate harmonies but they fall flat because they become backtrack.

2.) SM's choruses

SM songs (from what i've observed) always have the chorus presumably sung by everybody. it's always group singing when it hits the chorus.  I think it affects their line distribution. ex. MrMr's chorus couldve been handled by the vocal line and the rest of the easier parts can be given to the dance line or other sub-vocalists. Notice how MrMr pales to Goodbye in terms of line distribution - that is because the parts in the chorus are given to the vocals instead of everybody singing it.

I think the best example of almost perfect line distribution in a Kpop song is Nine Muses' Glue. Nobody in that song ended up with meager seconds or one-liners...and that's for a 3 minute song (as compared to MrMr which is 4mins long)

would love to hear your thoughts too. thanks :D

SM doesn't actually use harmonies that much though, which is kind of sad. If you listen to SNSD's first album, there's tons of stuff going on in the background -- layered vocals (usually by TaengSic) are all over the place. But apart from that/after, there's only a few songs here and there with any harmonies (like Luna and Seohyun doing it all, basically). I can only think of a handful of songs with harmonizing -- or am I overlooking something?

And yeah, the choruses tend to cut chunks out when you think about line distribution, but it's not like everyone actually sings them. If they do get sung live, it's only the main vocals doing it (see KyuWook basically everywhere while Yesung's adlibbing like crazy).

nope. they make it seem like everyone's singing but really, it's just the main and lead vocals

yup i agree with you on that, thanks :D

snsds rdr has a fair amount of line distribution too

uhuh but if you look at the chorus part, there are individual parts too. not just group singing. the boys has some fair distribution too, looking at how they work the chorus

Actually, I wish EXO would utilize harmonies more tbh, but yeah I think their last couple of title tracks felt like everyone was singing the chorus (at least to me)...

But f(x)'s harmonies own my soul - in both Red Light and RPPP they're FANTASTIC and they're ALL over both of their last albums, I absolutely adore them

This is a great post~

yup part of why i love rppp so much is that harmony and layering that they do before the first chorus...like props to their producer for that! :D

let me be honest with you, the harmony is just an illusion., its only one person signing but they use computer sound effects to make sound like that, at the end of redlight krystal and luna's high notes have a sound you can't reproduce in real ife, when you hear them do it life luna's note is hit right but it sounds nothing like the studio version, they use the same effect all over exo's songs to make their high notes sound better

i understand this but i guess my observation is more focused on the fact that sm songs use a lot of harmonies in their songs which i think adds more value to their production because some of them are really wonderful to listen to despite the fact that onnly one person from the group may be doing all those harmonies. thats why ita sad that they cant replicate it in lives because only one person can do it apparently. thanks tho

From the groups I know (GG and f(x)), I'm pretty sure Seohyun is the only one harmonizing live. She does it in most IGAB and The Boys performances, and she did it in at least one recent Gee performance.

yasss props to seobb for always exerting an effort to up soshis live performances with her harmonizing. ive noticed that since the boys. thats why shes one of my faves.

Yeah I'm pretty sure everyone can recognize that Seohyun is SNSD's harmonization queen. Literally she's always doing everything.

You know why SM songs have a lot of harmonization vocal?

Because sm buys songs from Western producers. English songs normally have good multi layered vocals. And western artists always have good harmonies in their songs. Lady gaga, rihanna, katy perry's songs all have multi layer of vocal, especially lady gaga's songs, they have a lot of hidden vocal underlying between main and sub vocal layer. Eg, bad romance chorus has 3 layers of vocals which you can hardly recognize each of them unless you filter them out using softwares.

For example, snsd's run devil run, i got a boy, hoot are all english songs translated into korean song
