His Man and Merry Queer, Korea's first LGBT dating/reality programs

Recommended Posts

Thank you for making the thread

First thing I want to say is how wholesome and real some of the moments are. Gay dating shows here could definitely learn from it.

For merry queer, it is also informative and teaches the viewer on how others are living.

What also fascinated me was how the style of clothes and manners are so idol like. So there is some inspiration coming from the gay world and dipping into idol world. I wonder which idol would watch this show 🤔

Probably key/Seungkwan for me

I haven't seen Merry Queer yet, but I thought one half of one of the couples was trans?

Yeah there a three couples. The lesbian couple , the young youtuber gay couple and my favourite, the trans and cis girl. The last feels the most authentic one and their story is just so sad sometimes. But atleast it showing the reality queer people face in SK.

I agree with @Shaandenigma this is really typical of gay dating life, especially if there is only one top masculine guy around.

As others have said, it's getting annoying that they are so focused on either changmin or Hyeokjun.

I genuinely thought I saw a connection between changyu and seonyul, but maybe the age difference is causing some issues. But the boy is soo adorable, I am just baffled that he is not getting noticed at all.

Now having seen the full episode, I have a lot more thoughts about the show and its players. The Hyeokjun fixation makes sense because he's been on the most dates with different guys. All the calls he's gotten have been from guys who went on dates with him. He and Changmin had that date before they got to the house which is why they called each other the first night. Eunchan had eyes on him from the beginning and then asked him on a date that went well from his vantage point so he's continuing to pursue the guy he likes who hasn't shot him down. Hyeon also went on the most spectacular date in terms of activity with Hyeokjun that went well and hasn't been given any indication that Hyeokjun doesn't like him. So those two consistently calling him is reasonable. And Hyeokjun deciding to call Changmin after evaluating his other connections is also reasonable. Considering how clean-cut and vanilla Hyeokjun is in his presentation and how he carries himself, I think aesthetic and personality-wise, Changmin would be the most compatible total package for what he's probably looking for.

Now when I look at who called Changmin, only one sticks out as being frustrating and that's Seonyul. Jeongho gets a pass because he just got there, spent the entire day with Eunchan which was awkward and has nothing else to go off of for the others except appearances. Hyeokjun did have meaningful interaction with him and did get a call from him. Jeonghyeon and him have the deepest connection so far built from being the pair that spends the most time together talking to each other. But what has happened between Seonyul and Changmin for the former to even think he has a shot at this stage? Changmin has never called him. They haven't been on a date. The one interaction he thinks they had was him trying to flirt with Changmin while they were in the kitchen, and Changmin brushing it off to focus on Jeonghyeon. He's thinking that if he has the chance to properly shoot his shot something can happen there. And what makes it more aggravating is that he's trying to ward off Changyu so that he looks available to Changmin, but is also still stringing him along to have as a fallback. He just really irks me now to the point that I want Changyu to just drop it and move on. I hope he and Jeongho bond over not getting calls and become a thing.

I also don't like the BL-fan segment of the audience trying to turn Changmin into a fuqboi now just because like 4 different guys are interested in and he doesn't know what to do about it. For one, it's literally only been 3 days in the show, no one is in love yet. Infatuated, yes, but not in love. Second, he can't help that other people find him attractive for being handsome, nice, and polite. He's not responsible for other people's choices. I also don't think he's conflicted as much as he feels super awkward having people really into him when he's into someone else. The way people think he could be questioning his connection to Jeonghyeon when he threw himself onto Jeonghyeon's spot on Jeonghyeon's bed for each call he answered while making the most confident call to Jeonghyeon is just mind-boggling.

I can't settle on what the producers' intentions were beyond just documenting how gay men date in reality because sometimes they are very hands-off where it feels like the guys are aimless and wasting time doing nothing. But then they do things to like the room swap next episode to stir things up like they really want couples to come out of the show. On the one hand as someone who watches a lot of other reality dating shows, it's refreshing to watch something that doesn't feel orchestrated to create the most drama and "storylines." But I also feel like at times no one is actually dating or trying to build a romantic connection with how they are able to retreat away and not interact with the people they like despite that they are all living under the same roof with a bunch of free time.

I get what you are saying and I hear you, but the show kind of puts Changmin as the protagonist and that makes me bored sometimes. It is absolutely not his fault that he is getting attention, but because of his shy/introvert personality he also doesn't know how to handle that level of direct attention. This is where I believe the producers should have stepped in and help him and move the story along. I look forward to the room swap, perhaps there will be more interaction between the others.

As for seonyul, I agree he is stringing changyu along and I hope that poor darling gets more attention from others. His personality is rare, direct and knows what he wants and how he wants it. Atleast they acknowledge his maturity.

Also love our resident gossip girl Jeongho, he is entertaining.

But the story is moving along in the direction of more conflict which ups the stakes and makes for better TV. Changmin, the most desirable man, chose to call Jeonghyeon who has not gotten a single other call up to this point. This gives Jeonghyeon a boost of confidence. Then after this, Changmin gets a call from Hyeokjun, the first guy he called who has called him twice. So now he conflicted because he has two guys he feels a connection to, and another guy he probably has no interest in (Seonyul) that his friend likes that he has to figure out how to turn down.

I saw this in the last episode, he is finally more confident and speaks up. But i still want more directing from the producers to move things along. We only have few more episodes due to those conservative assholes.

Have you seen the extra clips they release? Because there were a lot of other developments that happened during the last ep that they didn't include that suggest a major shift in the next couple of eps. Like in the one released today showed that the Changmin changed the sleeping arrangements in the quad room so that he and Jeonghyeon are sharing a bed and he said he did that because he has the highest affinity for Jeonghyeon out of the three. And since he kept throwing himself on Jeonghyeon's bed during the phone calls, that switch probably happened beforehand. But it’s in this trailer for the next ep so who knows. But it’s definitely spicing things up ahead of the room swap:

there is a translated transcript in the comments.

Editing to add I think something could develop with Jeongho and Changyu since they were in a promo photo together and have been hanging around each other, now sharing a bed for at least a night.

No I havent seen this, i saw you mentioned it in the another thread. Will definitely watch them tonight with the wine I just bought 😁

Happy to hear there is someone feeling changyu, if only he was few more years older I myself would have chatted him on his IG.

well damn...he may be kind of a dick for that but this guy is hotter than anyone on the show so idk who rlly won😭😭

Right!! I was going to say that as well.

Also, having finished the entire show now. I can't see the attraction from between Jeongho and Hyeokjun.

I am happy that Changmin and Jeonghyeon are together, but that was predictable. I am wondering about Eunchan/Seonyul/Changyu. I want a follow up of them.

Like I had to shake my head when he said he'd let a guy cheat on him once when he was in tears after Changmin didn't pick him to share a room and then had to spy on him and Hyeon like there was even a chance they'd do something. He fronts at being like a cool boy who is so understanding (but is really willing to just be a doormat) and I think Changmin sees through that and is trying to spare him. But it's failing. I'm just glad Jeonghyeon is fixated on a guy like Changmin rather than one of the plethora of other sleazebags who'd take advantage of his naivete without a second thought.

I felt the same and it brought back memories of when I was younger. Dating is hard on its own, but dating as a gay men even harder. JH will learn eventually to be less naive and be more careful with himself. I like your assessment of Changmin, he does seem like that person who is more considerate of the people around him. I am genuinely surprised about Hyeonkjun and what JH said about him not being nice in real life. He looked adorable albeit a but dim, but harmless. Suprised about that one.

Either way it was a great show and I liked that it was more realistic than western ones.
