[Asianjunkie] Korean music critic talks K-pop companies maintaining absolute control over idols/media, having to self-publish for being industry critical

I am watching this situation in real time with my Gfriend girls. The company trying to keep them from performing by trademarking the group name in the short lead up to the company disbanding them. We really don't know what is going to happen in the end. HYBE has a lot of money for lawyers.

read it. it is fascinating how often groups lose fans once they leave the company

jype aren't exactly a good company (there is no such thing in the industry) but they did the right thing and let got7 keep their name. i thought the group was done, unless there was going to be a special album for an anniversary, yet got7 pulled through. but even they lost a good chunk of fans after they left the company. it's weird

They were disbanded early, because 1 or 2 decided that they would not re-sign with Source Music. Source Music should have just kept them on without promotions for another 4 months instead of disbanding them early and copping all the blame for GFriend disbanding. But its Source Music and they are incompetent morons.

However Source Music lets Viviz sing GFriend's song. They are not the bad guy, they are just incompetent morons.

Show me any genuine legitimate source for this. Because none exists.

How would they stop them? You can cover songs, you just pay a license in some cases (also Source likely doesn't own the songwriting rights, just the masters and recordings, think of the example of Taylor Swift and her label, they own her old songs, but if she records new versions which she has the only people she has to pay are the songwriters). Source disbanded them early and copyrighted the names because they were afraid that all the members would go somewhere together and keep the group going (like Brown Eyed Girls did).

I don't remember anything about 1-2 members not re-sign cause it was never disclosed. Unless I'm deluded here, Source only announced that they "had discussion" and decided to end GFRIEND.

Having the former members singing their old songs aren't something new and not something that need permission from them. That's only a matter of paying copyrights. It's VIVIZ (or maybe BPM or Mnet, idk) that asked permission to take the unreleased song from Source Music for VIVIZ release, and I bet that is acceptable for Source but it comes with cost of course.

Indeed fascinating.

As for GOT7 part, I think they losses their fans which we labeled them as company-biased fans (or I kinda label that myself)

But Got7 is doing very well even after leaving. Their last album is their best selling, even their concert outsold. I guess it’s because their fans hated JYPE & that's a fact 🤣

Oh that's even better then! In honesty, I didn't really follow GOT7 so when someone said they losses fans after sent out from their label company, I could only conclude that. But Ahgasse being hateful towards JYPE is indeed not something unknown of for me since I have a few hardcore ahgasses hated the company and bash on daily basis, so nothing new on that 😂

they definitely lost company stans, but the core fandom is hanging in there. i'm pretty sure with their traction they could have been million sellers under jype by now, but they took that risk anyways

..

Read their handwritten goodbye letters that they wrote. One specifically had "I've decided to leave Source Music". That person ended GFriend, not Source Music. Nothing has stopped them from staying as 6 like Shinwa. They just cant use the GFriend name.

I mean, their industry is super small too. Agencies are related to production companies who own channels or programs that are tools of promotions or can produce other things like dramas to expand beyond music. idk where I saw a map of how every company is connected lol

Good read.

I never cared for this until 9/30, so yeah.

I'm sorry but why would you want to end gfriend when you worked hard and took pride of your own legacy, and when you want to stay as gfriend? It's not making sense to me-

But thanks for the reminder I'll re-read their handwritten letters.
