Would you classify obesity a disease?

Yesterday I heard on the news that American doctors were going to start calling obesity a disease, so that people would get help to fix their problem-and doctors can get paid for it.

Might as well throw in 'overweight' to the discussion too.   Although I'm aware some people are overweight because they have lower metabolism, other health issues...

There are several things about this issue... would you consider it a disability? Or is it just a combination of bad habits?

I'm not going to lie.  I know I'm going to get some shit for this, but I've always considered obesity a disease.  I know it's not contagious or infectious, but... it's a life-risking condition.  But at the same time, I think it's a choice.  A disease that people choose to have.

I think it may be considered a disease just because... Someone may be overweight and it's not a big deal, but when someone is obese there is something wrong with them, maybe they're considering that... Would I call it a disease? Yes... Because there's probably sort of a disorder with the person, to gain that much weight to the point of getting obese...

Saw that on the new yesterday as well.

And nope, I don't consider it a disease.

It can be a disease, or something caused by a disease, but it can also be utter disregard for your health, laziness or both. It depends on the person... it's just like anorexia: there are those who can't gain weight, but there also are those who deliberately starve themselves. If someone is underweight or overweight because of a disease, it's not their fault, but if someone puts his or hers own health in danger... well, I have nothing but contempt for them. I'm talking about extreme cases here, there's nothing wrong in being slightly underweight or overweight.
