stab 4,072 Posted June 20, 2013 Share Posted June 20, 2013 Yesterday I heard on the news that American doctors were going to start calling obesity a disease, so that people would get help to fix their problem-and doctors can get paid for it. Might as well throw in 'overweight' to the discussion too. Although I'm aware some people are overweight because they have lower metabolism, other health issues... There are several things about this issue... would you consider it a disability? Or is it just a combination of bad habits? I'm not going to lie. I know I'm going to get some shit for this, but I've always considered obesity a disease. I know it's not contagious or infectious, but... it's a life-risking condition. Someone may be overweight and it's not a big deal, but when someone is obese there is something wrong with them, maybe they're considering that... Would I call it a disease? Yes... It depends on the person... it's just like anorexia: there are those who can't gain weight, but there also are those who deliberately starve themselves. If someone is underweight or overweight because of a disease, it's not their fault, but if someone puts his or hers own health in danger... well, I have nothing but contempt for them.
