Q: "Who is your most memorable fan?"

A: "There's one fan who I remember. My parents got divorced when I was one, and I have never seen my father or his pictures. I don't know his face at all. Our group had a hand shake event for the first time in Japan and a man came up to me and said 'I am cheering you on.' The moment we shook hands, I just felt 'this is my dad!' And then the person after him - I guess this would make her my grandmother? - said 'doesn't she remember you?' which could've meant anything but it made me even more sure that he was my father."

A: "I haven't."

I get this. I wouldn’t recognize my own father. Last time I saw him I was a teenager. He’s now trying to get into my life in my 30s. Too late.

Let her have this. Maybe she had wanted to meet her father her whole life, and was feeling strongly about that day. Hopefully she got some sort of closure and the hope that he's still cheering her on.

This sounds like a more extreme version of when Jiyeon's father paid to attend a fansign because she was so busy he could never meet her

I read that in Japan shared custody is much rarer, so if one parent gets custody the other parent might not see their children

Sometimes you just need that closure or feeling of one especially if it’s a parent that didn’t care about you at first.

She's 24 and an adult.  Nobody could legally stop him from reaching out to her.  He could've reached out to her before she was famous.

This event probably happened when she was in her mid teens assuming this was a handshake with HKT or AKB. She was already famous when she turned 18.

Other sources says it was during her first ever handshake event, when she was 14 (mid-2012).

I assumed Iz*one, since they said first handshake event in Japan as a group (as opposed to first handshake period).

And there are different levels of fame to be sure.

 

Edit: if you think Sakura's level of fame in HKT is the same as it is now, then you're the clown.

This translation leaves out that it was her first handshake specifically in her hometown (Kagoshima). So it was during her HKT48 days, in her hometown, and the Soompi translation says that the older woman directly asked her "Don't you remember us?", which lends credence to the possibility that it was her father or at the very least, someone significant from her past.
