physical sales have been on a downward spiral since the past decade and a half. the fact that only adele, taylor swift, and maybe another artist i'm missing can consistently sell over 500k pure physical copies is... amazing. we also don't have incentives to buy the albums for western artists. like, do i really want a photocard of adele in her backyard. or maybe i do, idk.

Kpop album sales are not a good indication of the South Korean music market as a large proportion is bought outside of South Korea. There are several bigger music markets including the US, Japan and China.

The South Korea music industry might be among the biggest in the world by now but I doubt it's close to the US music industry and it might also be smaller than the Chinese and Japanese industries.

It's not really, having huge physical sales doesn't impact how much streaming overpowers the physical market...

Still though SK has been rising since the last 10 years due to importing their music globally, it's just outside top 5 music markets in the world

I would buy Adele's physical album if she did a Peppa Pig collab. I want a peppa pig photocard, also Peppa with Adele... iconic duo

i think even other artists who dont have big pure sales (which in west, big pure sales is prolly from vinyl) , popular acts, will have that much, and way more in pure sales + streaming equivalent album. kpop maybe influencing mass buying albums (that just becomes trash, and creating issues for donation center that get dumped with 1000 albums) unfortunate bc i think kpop has to do away with that nonsense knowing how much it inconveniences others but they are making massive bank without trying so never gonna happen. so fked up.. but anyway yeah sk far from comparing to US other huge markets

This. Alot of Kpop groups' album sales seem to be majorly contributed by and depended on international fans.

Meanwhile, if you take a look at Japan, the group Snowman, the best-selling and most popular group in Japan atm for example, able to sell 800k per day (along with another group called Sixtones), sold 1M+ copies at least per release since 2020 but 99% of their sales are reportedly domestic because unlike Kpop groups, they're not widely known or as popular outside Japan (I'm sure majority of people in this forum don't care about them and never listened to their music), so the strong support and sales mostly came from inside the country therefore I believe Japan still holds the position of being bigger and higher ranking music industry than Korea. Plus, Japan is very loyal to their homegrown music acts despite Kpop'/BTS's popularity and still is one of those countries where big percentage of its people still buy physical albums with streaming and online digital music platforms are on the rise. In 2020, for streaming category only, they're the fifth largest in the world and Japan's online music market has been gaining alot of traction and rising exponentially eversince.
