"Chinese" R&B

Wow! I don't even know what to say, but I know that his voice is....I don't even know the word for it, but his voice is incredible! I haven't seen the likes and dislikes yet, but unless this song is actually not of your taste, for someone to dislike the song just because a black man is singing in Chinese, you have to have nothing but pure hate in your heart. This sound is amazing.

Some of those Chinese probably don't like their language being reappropriated for singing by someone who isn't ethnically Chinese. They might feel very proud of their ancient archaic language.

lol..where did you come up with that silly thought?  The chinese love seeing foreigners speak / sing in chinese...it's a novelty...

I think the problem here is ppl are probably looking up the original and they stumbled upon this totally different version with so much r&b stylings and ad-lib, plus some rather stiff & awkward mandarin enunciation..they are probably thinking WTF is this and thumbed it down...

Yes, they might like it as a novelty. But apparently when someone is trying to be serious, put their own spin on things, and make a name for himself or herself they might not like it too much.

well, just imagine a chinese guy with a nice voice turning a classic r&b song into a traditional cpop song with a heavy chinese accent...see how you'd like it..

Being a variety show act is one thing, but if you can't even pronounce the words properly, why would people take you seriously as a singer...

Lets not kid ourselves, there is still a big problem with racism in china, and i have seen coments on weibo before about people who dont look chinese and how they shouldnt be speaking the language, regardless of pronunciation. Also, it happens more with black people than other races so I would not be surprised if some of the dislikes were due to this, but not all of them of course.

I do not like to say it but it is my opinion based on what I have seen online and in real life. Its not everyone and generally its not in your face but for a country that only opened up to the world relatively recently it may be understandable but not acceptable.

Wow his voice is nice and Cpop could always use more r&b songs. He should go to Taiwan to do promotions. Of course racism is still there, but I think entertainment shows would be enamored with a foreigner being able to sing in fluent mandarin.

then why are some Japanese artists popular in china, foreigners might get a few racial slurs on weibo just like how PSY is getting dragged for speaking english with an accent on twitter, but

the Japs are hated by the Chinese in general...and they are not just vocal about it, they beat them up

why is MJ and Whitney Houston popular in china? Xscape was the #2 selling album the week it was released in china...and whitney's greatest hits was one of the biggest seller the year she passed away...

America is a  racist country, and it didn't stop many black artists from making it... even in the 50s

I think it's really sad some ppl love to blame everything on racism as if the public owes any minority race artist their superstardom and the 99%  likes ratio on their youtube video..what a joke...

you know what, I just realised something, CHINA is blocked from youtube,.....so now is it must be racist FOBs or whites who stumbled upon this video and give this black man a dislike?  Good lord,

Did I blame everything on racism? I specifically said I thought some of the dislikes were related to it, not all.

Your original post acted like it wasn't a factor at all, and that it was silly to think so, which I dont agree with based on past events from what I've seen online and heard irl. You said yourself foreigners can get racial slurs on weibo, so why cant those same people dislike a video for the same reason? Plenty of people in china have access to youtube btw, whether its offically banned or not.

Indeed, plenty of black artists are popular in china (even though I never saw any official sales because music sales are almost non existent in mainland) and like you say there are racists in america and every country too. It doesnt stop other races being successful and if this guy is good enough I'm sure he can find success in china too. I never disputed that.

The funny thing is, while ppl here jumping to the conclusion that racism is clicking on the dislike button,

his other videos on youtube has a huge like ratio...I guess the racists aren't visiting these videos? Or you're gonna tell me there are still a few dislikes on these, they are all from racists..

No, I don't think it's a significant factor at all, significant enough to cause that big dislike bar......

there are so many reasons why ppl clicked dislike on that video..

so I really wonder why so many people here love zoom in on racism as the factor...

gosh, could it be that his mandarin pronounciation is awkward

or nigerian saw him singing a chinese song in china and they feel betrayed.....

or a random racist white/asian/indian man clicked on that video and clicked dislike..

so to you, a racist chinese netizen getting VPN service to bypass the youtube block and dislike his video is the most likely story?

...ooookay

the funny thing is on China's own video site, QQ video, his most visited video has ZERO dislikes...i wonder if racists in China only watches videos on youtube through VPN services

http://v.qq.com/cover/8/86tmvrz5qwyq98h.html?vid=j0013pyd0cd

and on youku..ALL the comments are positive..

ppl are always looking baseless explanation that would satisfy your own worldview

and mandarin is only 400 years old (which isn't that old and is actually considered pretty new)

i've lived in china for five years and i've never seen, heard, or read anything about that...

the elderly might feel a certain way about japanese but the younger generation do not harbor any ill feelings towards them

And you refusing to acknowledge any chance of racism being involved doesnt satisfy your own world view? You dont know my world view, I'm actually have quite a moderate view towards racist things that I've witnessed in china because I give people the benefit of the doubt and some leeway due to the culture differences, education and the lack of interaction many people have had with other races.

Again, I never talked about a big dislike bar. I was referring to some of the dislikes. Where did I say every dislike is from a racist netizen? Please show me.

Also, I'm willing to admit it's unfair to suggest there is definitely a racist factor in any dislike but I dont think its silly to suggest the possibility.

Sorry but that's simply not true. While it doesnt pertain to everyone, Chinese dislike towards Japanese is obvious and widespread, even among the younger generation.

there is a chance for ANYTHING, the large dislike bar could be due to sexism...ageism, ppl who thinks he's overweight, autoracist blacks, racist whites, yes, racist chinese or from a group of people who got drunk and hit the dislike button on their cellphones...so there is a 0.01% possibilty that it could be any of the above...what's the point in having me acknowledge that?

.Anything is possible, but not necessarily probable...in this case, it's unlikely...

my beef is why are ppl here so focused on racism when there are so many possibilities...is it because ppl here have their own racist/autoracist or at least bigoted believes that ppl from China can't judge music on its own merit and must resort to racial discrimination? There was even a suggestion that they are done by chinese netizens who bypass the youtube block...ppl are so adamant about proving that it's done by racists..I see more racism/autoracism in these suggestions than what I see in that dislike bar.

Why do you keep saying people, if you are referencing me then please do it directly.

You said youtube is blocked in china, to which I replied plenty of people access it from china still via vpns and other software. That is true.

We cant prove what is done either way, so I am not adamant about proving anything. You keep ignoring my whole post and repeating your accusations.

Im not saying anything is automatically racist nor to I believe everyone in china is racist as I outlined in my last post. I am just pointing out the possibility that it could be.

My original comment about racism that you seem to have taken issue with had the line "so I would not be surprised if some of the dislikes were due to this, but not all of them of course." Note I said, I would not be surprised, that doesn't mean the same as I believe, and I said some of the dislikes, not all. I dont even see how this can be turned into a debate, it wasn't a hard line stance by any means. In fact I tried to be as clear and rational as possible considering I know how delicate the issue is.

In the bigger picture I dont really care why people disliked this guy's music, but since we are on the subject, I do think there is a issue with racism within china that needs to be acknowledged and addressed, as in other countries too, whether it is happening in this situation or not.

I am addressing more than just you because obviously there are quite a few members here complaining about racism.

Discrimination exists everywhere and the sun rises in the east. It's common knowledge.  It's not something that needs to come to light and wait for acknwoledgement. ..but We're talking about R&B in China & Hao Ge.

In this context,  It's so farfetched to single out racism, out of 100 other possible reasons..and that suggestion is based on basically one video dislike bar.  It's obvious some ppl here have negative preconceived notions on China that leads them to single out this as the explanation

ok fine, you aren't adamant about proving anything ...

Racism exists in China, but it isn't an issue there, let alone a big issue.. because ppl aren't in your face racists.and.it's 99.999% chinese in China.

The fact its 99.9% Chinese is what makes it worse for minorities in china, because they stand out more and are easier targets for discrimination, whether its in your face or not. Its even harder for their voices to be heard and for people to acknowledge what is offensive to others.

If you're not Chinese, it's almost impossible to become a citizen there...you are to go there, do your business, make your money and leave.  The Chinese government obviously isn't interested in any type of racial integration.  Basically you're there as a tourist or someone who is on a foreign assignment.  You are not going to lose your job or any rights because of your race.  The avearge person in China might not be crazy about foreigners, but they aren't going to get aggressive and attack you for no reason.  You're not going to get pulled over and get anal searched by the cops because you're not Chinese.  Basically the most disgusting racial shit you get in America won't happen in China...

The worst is probably some ppl don't want to deal with you.   They are probably the same ppl who will ignore you if you are fat or poor, etc..

It's not nice nor civilized behaviour, but you're not going to get more shit than someone who is fat, ugly, old, dressed poorly, etc...

On the bright side, there are ppl who are interested in anything foreign in China..

Everyone wants the world to be perfect and people want to be liked, but 99% of people get snubbed for one thing or another...

racism seems like be a huge issue for ppl from America because of the shit that happens in the country due to the size of the minority population and the nature of some americans who seems to have mental issues and love to start shit for no reason whatsoever.

I wouldn't consider racism a huge ISSUE in China...more like annoying racial insensitivity / ignorance...the average person in China doesn't even get to meet a single foreigner in his entire life..
