It always surprises me how many people know so little about foreign politics.

Say when I bring up the coup that happened against Aung Sung Suu Kyi in Myanmar, or Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev giving the military the right to shoot against protesters in his country, the people I've spoken to don't know a thing. Like they choose ignorance about the world we all inhabit. People everywhere need to be more educated so we can all live better. But that doesn't seem like it's going to happen. Sorry rant over.

yeah, a lot of people don't give a shit about stuff that doesn't directly affect them. It's really frustrating.

I don't even know about politics in my country much less to know about foreign politics 💀

Are these people from Asia or the countries you have mentioned?

I have friends that are super into politics but their interest don't go over the european politics (since we live here) or countries that have something to do with Europe

It's one of my American friends, which is ironic because Americans in my experience like to talk so much about other countries and their issues. Someone said it's a diversion tactic from the US news to stop Americans from realizing how shitty the US is.

It's not a diversion, all this information is out there, you have to seek it out it's not gonna be spoon fed to you. The current turmoil with Ukraine and Kazakhstan has been covered here...really depends on the each individual imo some are into politics and some just don't care. Your experience is anecdotal, not a generalization.

Americans talk about our own shit more than anyone else's.  In my experience everyone talks about our own shit more than their own.  24-hour news cycle, babe.

I used to be that way- but intentionally, because keeping up with global politics used to give me severe anxiety, I was constantly on edge. Then I started educating myself on local politics when I was old enough to vote and learning more about global politics followed. That being said, I think a lot of people would rather remain ignorant than actively seek out what's going on in the world (esp if it doesn't affect them directly)- because it can be super stressful to receive a constant cycle of news about how awful everything is. Idk.

It's worth knowing foreign politics because you'll know things, how other countries having crises and how they're handling them. However, I would probably go only as far as getting the gist of what's going on, and a little bit in-depth if the crises can be relate to the country or region I'm living in. Sometimes, it's just hard to get yourself out of the box to look at other countries when your own country is filled with so many worrying unsolved crises putting you living on the edge each day.

Although, I do think we could feed ourselves to be aware of foreign politics at the very least. It could be a living example, a learning experience in many ways, but it does take ones effort especially making this a productive habit.

Why people should?

They have to care a lot of things that directly affect them everyday already

Sure knowing a bit is a nice bonus but there's nothing surprising about not knowing what happening in a country that they probably never visit or sumn
