(G)I-DLE’s Soyeon Calls Out “My Teenage Girl” Audience Members For Failing To Do Their Part

MBC‘s highly anticipated survival program, My Teenage Girl premiered its first episode and it’s off to a big bang. The final 83 contestants that were chosen for the program gave it their all, as they prepared and performed their evaluation stages for the mentors. And while the show alone has been making headlines due to the ongoing hype, (G)I-DLE‘s Soyeon has started to make headlines for her brutally honest evaluation.

During the premiere episode, contestants Kim Ye Seo and Kang Seo Jinperformed “Nonstop” by OH MY GIRL in matching yellow outfits. Using traditional Korean fans as introductory props, the duo gave it their all for their 3 minute long performance.

Following the conclusion of their stage, it was time for the mentors to judge the performance. (G)I-DLE’s Soyeon was the first mentor to share her thoughts on what she witnessed—and she did not hold back

The talented girl group member started off her evaluation by wondering if the “blind” round audience evaluators were able to hear the duo’s singing abilities clearly.

When the door opened, I wondered, ‘were the ‘blind’ round audition members unable to hear you guys?’

— (G)I-DLE’s Soyeon

In the first episode, there were multiple rounds that the contestants had to pass. In order to be judged by the celebrity mentors, contestants had to pass the first round that was strictly voted for by the audience. This is a “blind” audition round, which means that it’s strictly based on their abilities. If the contestants successfully received more than 75% of audience votes, the door between them and the mentors would be opened—leading to the second round of evaluations from the mentors.

This is important to note given that Kim Ye Seo and Kang Seo Jin performed in front of the mentors, meaning that the duo passed the first blind audition round. This is what (G)I-DLE’s Soyeon was referring to when she asked, “were the ‘blind’ round audition members unable to hear [them]?”

Soyeon continued her direct evaluation by revealing that the duo’s “Nonstop” performance was by far the “worst performance” she had seen and it was so bad, she “didn’t even get mad.”

Of all the stages that I’ve watched today, it was the worst performance I saw. It was so bad, I didn’t even get mad.

— (G)I-DLE’s Soyeon

The (G)I-DLE member continued by revealing the exact reason behind her previous statement and her overall disappointment. She shared that there were numerous other talented contestants before the “Nonstop” duo that the mentors were unable to meet—which Girls’ Generation‘s Yuriagreed with.

There were so many talented contestants that we were unable to meet because the door was not opened for them

— (G)I-DLE’s Soyeon

However, this was not the end of Soyeon’s brutally honest evaluation. The girl group member called out the audience members in charge of the “blind” round auditions for not doing their part correctly.

Of all the stages that I’ve watched today, it was the worst performance I saw. It was so bad, I didn’t even get mad.

— (G)I-DLE’s Soyeon

She concluded her evaluation with just 5 words to sum up the entire situation.

Honestly, I’m a bit angry.

— (G)I-DLE’s Soyeon

  • My Everything changed the title to (G)I-DLE’s Soyeon Calls Out “My Teenage Girl” Audience Members For Failing To Do Their Part

the format is so weird - to call it a blind audition is a lie, the “blind” voters we’re definitely watching the performances through a screen as well so they were not voting solely on abilities like any other voting show.

also, some people are not aware that they can still be eliminated even if they reach the 75% and in this case both girls got 0 out of the 4 judges and left the show anyways.

the performances are bad, c class at most if they were in other shows but they showed the auditions of some of the most popular contestants so i’m hoping it picks up in the next episode. kinda bummed that they didn’t let yuyeon pass, she had the potential to get better and could’ve been a perfect idol center for the show.

idk if you're being generous, but this perf is a straight up f class in produce 101 💀

i’m saying in general, even the “best” performances were forgettable. like the super hyped former yg trainee wouldn’t have even made if it wasn’t for the rap part, the autotune is saving most girls too.

soyeon did the right thing. im glad she didn't put up with all this bs. that performance was atrocious. tf is wrong with the audience. the fact that they got 75% of audience vote and ZERO votes from the judges show that this system is so flawed

I don’t know why they let these girls through. They were awful and need a lot more training. Whoever sent them to this show in the first place was setting them up for embarrassment. Not cool because these are young kids and could face taunting and bullying at school. Especially since this has gone viral.

That was clearly bad. These girls are underaged and they're clearly not ready although their confidence is something else but I wonder about the responsible adults who thought it was good idea of sending them there. It's like they're setting these girls up for embarrassment. MBC is also becoming like Mnet here. They knew what they're doing and they're airing this on national tv  to get attention and bring publicity to the show and it's disgusting they're using underaged girls whow clearly can't sing for this. I mean the whole premise of the show with how it's called "My Teenage Girl" is creepy and sending redflags because I'm sure most of the contestants are underaged and the show is using these girls for everyone's entertainment.

Don't count me in on ridiculing these girls. I much rather criticize the show and the adults who were behind this.

Understandable why Soyeon said and acted that way by calling out the audience. I would react the same way tbh.

She has all the right to call out the audience for their BS..I'm still confused how these so called "blind auditions" work, because they seem like not blind to me but solely on looks otherwise there is no sensible explanation for the high votes..

anyways, the girls were awful but i kind of feel bad for them..that was embarrassing.

I love what she did but tbh most of the idols who are currently debuting can't hold a note live to save themselves. Especially the 4th generation idols are praised if they even manage to sing live no matter how horrible they sound. These programs atleast evaluate on how mediocre the live singing is and the idols need to be atleast decent in singing/dancing/performing. In actual idol groups you can easily debut if you are just a dancer or a visual while dancing to prerecorded vocals 90% of the time.

the girl with her hair down miiiiight have some potential, the one with the ponytail is actually tone-deaf and needs to not sing again, ever. She didn't even get the timing right.

to be fair the producers should be called cause they 100% set them up to drum up some publicity for the show, this was clearly meant to go viral.

Wow. They are mediocre, at best, singers, and that might be giving them too much credit. They made it through a first round with that kind of singing? It does sound like they were nervous but still. That was not good.

I definitely feel sorry for the girls. They should never have been put in that position. It seems as though they were set up to fail to drum up interest, etc. in the show. Someone told them they were good singers, should try out, etc. and now they were completely embarrassed on TV because of their performance.

These two topped Idol schools Rookie. It had to take serious courage to go that far. 😂

But kudos to Soyeon to actually say truth to them like this. Hopwfully they will take it to heart and work much harder on their future performances if they really wish to pursue this career.
