The 2000s trend of celebrities adopting foreign children.

As I stated in my previous Pitt vs Jolie thread, I could do a thread on Angelina Jolie. Well, this thread does not entirely surround her but she is involved. I also have another thread coming about conspiracy theories, I know many people don't like conspiracy theories. I like them but I don’t believe in most of them, I just follow them because I'm bored. But this one in particular involves one of my favourite actor, and it honestly hurts me.

Anyway....

If y'all remember that 2000s trend of celebrities adopting foreign children. I remember it quite well, I remember my entire country took it as joke. We don't really take anything serious. Even my cousins and I joke about it; "MaYbE 1 daY 1 Of ThOsE rIcH cElEbRitiES WiLL adOpT YoU".

I don't have a problem with Celebrities & rich people adopting but in the 2000s it was so big I question(ed) if it was genuine or was it just seem "woke" or that they "cared". Honestly believe SOME of them cared, and SOME didn't. I can't exactly say who cared or who didn't. People adopt for multiple reasons: health issues, publicity, loneliness, etc.

This trend was very popular starting with Angelina Jolie & Madonna.

What are your opinions on this trend?

When I was a kid I knew a fair number of transracial adoptees so it wasn't weird to me

But as adult, I find it weird...

It just seems like an unnecessary amount of stress to put on the child. Especially when white people adopt a child of color. How are you supposed to support them with any racism they might encounter?

I feel like a lot of white adoptee parents would just brush it under the rug like "nono, it's not a race thing sweetie, the world is just cruel to people who are adopted. it's because you're adopted. your struggles are a reflection of my kindheartedness, because I adopted you. Instead of giving birth to you, you know. You're not being subjected to racism, we're BOTH struggling because you're adopted."

Idk maybe I'm projecting

Also literally every time, these white adoptee parents have biological children too and THAT makes me uncomfortable.

I think the best dynamic I've seen was two transracial adoptees (Chinese girls) from the same country, not raised with any biological kids or siblings. Those sisters have a very close bond, and I get an overwhelming sense that it was really important, identity-wise, for them to have eachother.

yeah i've seen this firsthand. my home country is predominantly white and there's white couples who will adopt poc children, who later on have a really hard time dealing with identity issues around their race, teasing from people at school and in public in general etc.. it really is stressful for the child. i don't doubt a parent can love their child no matter the race of either party but you know.. it's an unfortunate situation. you kinda put your child in a position where they have no one who understands their struggles and can offer them support in a way that actually sticks i guess

I honestly feel like celebrities do it thinking to themselves that this is some humanitarian act that they're giving to these under privileged kids so in my mind, I find it quite selfish on the celebrities part. Obviously, some or maybe even all of them truly care..but from the outside looking in, it just seems that way
