The 2021 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) has officially announced this year’s nominees!

On November 3, the 2021 MAMA revealed its nominations for the upcoming award ceremony, which is scheduled to take place on December 11 at 6 p.m. KST.

Several changes have been made to the criteria for determining the awards this year. Unlike in previous years, fan votes will not be one of the criteria for determining the Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, and Album of the Year awards. However, the Worldwide Icon of the Year and Worldwide Fans’ Choice Top 10 awards will be determined entirely through fan votes, with no other criteria.

The criteria for the final winners are as follows:

  • Artist of the Year and Artist Category Awards– 40% judges’ evaluations, 20% digital performance, 20% physical album sales, 10% music video, 10% global music platform
  • Song of the Year and Song Genre Category Awards– 40% judges’ evaluations, 30% digital performance, 10% physical album sales, 10% music video, 10% global music platform
  • Album of the Year – 40% judges’ evaluations, 10% digital performance, 40% physical album sales, 10% global music platform
  • Worldwide Icon of the Year, Worldwide Fans’ Choice Top 10 – 100% official votes

I'm kinda proud of NCT Dream and TXT being nominated for Best Male Group for the first time and I'd like to see Hyuna wins Best Dance Solo. Baekhyun, Rosé and Taeyeon are main vocalists while Dumb Dumb and Lalisa choreos are underwhelming considering Somi and Lisa's skills. I know I'm biased but it would be a bummer to not see her win in this context. Though if it's entirely fan voted, I guess she doesn't stand much chance.

Also, it's odd that Purple Kiss aren't nominated for GG ROTY. I thought their last comeback made some waves. At least more than Lightsum did.

Dance performance aren't really base on the hardest dance but more for the most popular. I think DD has a choice to win since it well viral. But if we are talking about excellent performance with popularity it would be Hyuna's INC, great & popular choreography.

ok looking at past ceremonies it looks like Best New Artists nominees can't get nominated on the Best Male/Female Groups categories which is weird because Best New Artists can ALSO win Daesangs the same year like Miss A and 2NE1 won both Best New Female Arist and SOTY Daesangs in 2009/10 despite not being nominated in the Best Female Group category the same year(s),

The only exception was Wanna One who won both the Best New Male Aritst and Best Male Group the same year.

Anyways I feel like Kai, Taemin and Chungha could've easily taken Baekhyun, Rose and Taeyon's spots on the Best Dance category

like don't get me wrong I enjoy their songs but when I listen to them i think more about the vocals and the songs themselves but definitely not the dancing

I didn't even remember if Rosé danced in her music video (I checked and she didn't)

itzy had a pretty good year (but honestly, nothing can live up to dalla dalla, that was amazing to see lmao) but stayc is currently out charting both mafia and loco with asap alone, but also with stereotype. asap is currently #53 on melon and it was released earlier than mafia, which is currently at #201 on melon. loco is #53 and stereotype is just a rank above it at #52.

and we all know brave girls' story. rollin' continues to be huge, but chi mat ba ram and after we ride aren't major successes. but aside from rollin', asap is also out charting these songs as well.

same with gidle, but to be fair, they had a comeback in january and haven't released anything since, lol. doesn't seem fair to compare.

with that being said,  all of these girl groups had an amazing year and idol songs have done a lot better this year compared to last year. last year was so dry.

Some of the nominations don't make sense.

This award show is getting more messy and sus as years go by. This year they abolished the voting system for every category: artists, genres, etc. except for the "fan's choice" but what is sus is the "40% from  jury" aka "internal data" imo bc this means it's anyone's game. MAMA never mention who are/were part of the jury nor the criteria of their winners pick, hence this has been their way of rigging and 40% is alot. Let's say even if artists A and B obviously dominate the points for digitals, physicals, etc. aka stable in everything else but the "40% jury's choice" could be shady and turn the tables with their preference towards C, hence C could end up winning instead. If they had voting thing still going on at least we could see the clear progress of the people's choice eventhough that might just show popularity/which fandoms is the biggest.

Also, knowing that CJ acquired SM (who knows whatever deal they made), some of the results could probably end up be biased towards some/certain SM acts. I said "some/certain" and obviously not all bc definitely SM wouldn't want to be that obvious.
