and it'a fucking corny, unrealistic, and boring

I enjoyed the first 3 episodes so much but after that it went downhill, I predicted everything, I knew how it will end and who will won and who would face who

Spoiler

I fucking knew that the old man is the head! it was so obvious

I even predicted that the cop's brother would somehow reappear

my biggest issue is  that i couldn't stop feeling that this drama is trying to be more than it already is.

what with that fucking vip thing? so stupid

also many characters stand out as flat and forced

now don't get me wrong, my fav genre is fantasy so I'm always ready for something unrealistic . So, when i say that this drama is unrealistic, i don't meat that it wouldn't happen in real life. who cares about that. it is  just stupid?

like, for example ,

Spoiler

why would that girl sacrifice herself for the sake of the north Korean girl?

his drama is enjoyable to say the least but no more than that.

A story like this that tackles the issue of money and morality should be deeper. This drama  needed better dialogues, more depth of characters and storyline. it just brushed over this and that, and that's it

maybe because i'm used to read books that deal with such genres in a deeper way? I don't know

4/10

tbh, unless you speak korean, i don't think you can say much about the dialogue. but hey if you do, i would love to hear why because i find that interesting.

bad sub = usually on the translator but even then, these translator have so much limitations set by netflix such as "using 12 lines max" that it's hardly their fault now.

bad dub is bad dub

but i agree with you on the vip part.... that part was.... a choice

I loved those episodes but everything the vips spoke I wanted them to be the ones in the games. Least favorite parts of this series.

i had a lot of issues with it too. it has some great moments. but the ending was very disappointing. i thought the reason why the games were started would be more profound or interesting, a bigger reveal. it's something the show could've just told us in the beginning. front man and the detective could've been really interesting if it was explored more, i think they'll do more about front man on season 2 but

Spoiler

it would've been really fun to see the two of them actually talk and confront each other. they deserved more than just a 2 minute stand off. hopefully the detective is not actually dead!

It isn't anything new because there's alot of other shows and movies with this type of survival game plot like Alice in Borderland, Hunger Games, Battle Royale, As The Gods Will, The Hunt, etc. So I can see if some people find Squid Game boring and predictable. I about about the VIPs. They are obnoxious, annoying and their parts are boring too. But despite that, overall, I enjoy the drama more than I thought I would. It's kinda annoying though that suddenly everyone rn is trying to make Dalgona candy now due to Squid Game's hype and popularity atm.

I will defend my girlies bc they cwere my fav characters

Spoiler

Its fast paced and between meeting in 3rd game and just talking a lot during 4th game. They gotta show ilnam & gihun, Ali & sangwoo, deoksu Vs his right hand man? That's just during game, there's also the in-between games and a lot of this focused on minyeo, deoksu too. Plus junho story. But these girls were close ofc, and spend an hour? (I forgwt how long the marbles was) Talking, sharing intimate life detail really bonds you. And that's one of the few parts we got from them was jiyoung saying how she was in jail for killing her dad and when she got out no one was there for her, vs saebyeok who needs the money for her family, jiyoung has nothing out there essentially. So she gave up for her friend who did. I don't think that makes no sense. I'm sure ppl could think to be selfish but it's a diff mental state when you're alone, and it's either you die or your friend who is not alone. Even in the game she was alone, she hadn't been grouped with anyone until saebyeok. Like saebyeok found her just isolated sitting alone not like out in open of ppl looking for groups. It's easy imo to grow close easily to the one person in hundreds who approaches you when you were isolated. I guess it's a personal rationality than that it is lacking sense/character

I agree on some points tho. I hate vip too. And I can't say much ab the twists bc I spoiled myself on accident on a few twists of the last few. I'd say the twist with junho I knew, surprised me ngl and the scene was still effective to me. The ilnam twist, lukewarm in being surprised tbh, and the scene ngl I wasn't paying attn bc I was typing my letterboxd review when that scene was on hhhh. Idc ab it really. I've read some receptions of the vip now and I think everyone dislike them but some see some social commentary in them but eh still could Of done better.

I see the points ppl make ab it being about class but honestly. If that was point, it would be more transparent prolly. The main focus is death game by ppl who are poor/in serious debt. I think that was honestly just subtext. Idk what they'd do to explore it better but they could of for sure imo it's not a major story flaw per se they didn't, bc I don't see its goal as that. It's goal is really much simpler as just a death game, that happens to be involving ppl needing money. If I had to guess, lots of them were poor by circumstances, maybe most, but a lot like sangwoo, deoksu stole other ppl money, or gamblers like gihun, etc. Not fully correlating that its a class thing. Don't get me wrong.. Is mostly there but that wasn't main purpose imo. Would be cool if they expand on this s2
