OneHallyu Will Be Closing End Of 2023 ×
OneHallyu

A Korean group that debuted in 2007 which is known more for scandals than anything else in Korea (member DUI, gambling, spreading Covid, visiting adult parlors, wrecking a marriage, dating scandals, ...)

The group's name is Supernova and they were formed by Mnet in 2006, debuted in 2007.

The original group consisted of 6 members, leader and lead vocalist Yunhak, main vocalist Sungje, lead rapper and main dancer Kwangsoo, sub-vocalist and sub-rapper Jihyuk, lead vocalist Sungmo and cutie giant maknae and main rapper and lead dancer Geonil.

No, really, Geonil has always been too cute and pretty and with his 187 cm of height, he could've also been a model, in fact, he did model in the past, but now he's more focused in acting (and he's steadily been getting more and more roles).

Their debut song was named Hit and they performed it for the first time on Music Bank in September.

In the original group lineup, before the group was even called Supernova and was referred to as GM5, was former actor Han Ji Hoo, who was removed from the lineup.

(Han Ji Hoo)

He was then replaced by Yunhak and Kim Jinchul (Jinon of F.Cuz). Jinon was then removed and replaced by Sungmo (interestingly enough, Yunhak and Sungmo were the member with the most and worst scandals).

Each of the debuted members had a star-related nickname on top of their stage name. They were horrible. Spica Yunhak, Sirius Sungje, Becrux Kwangsoo, Acrux Jihyuk, Canopus Geonil, Vega Sungmo. Expectedly, nobody referred to them by using those names.

The group fell of pretty fast in Korea. As their debut didn't reach the top of their charts, their company Mnet Media was disappointed in their performance and put extreme pressure on them to succeed. Not even a duet with the hit girl group T-ara helped them establish themselves in their home country. They were sending them around other countries to promote, they were in Thailand, Japan and so on and they became completely forgotten in their own country. They guested at another artist's concert in Japan and got positive responses.

Their company had a new plan.

They debuted in Japan and topped the Oricon Daily Singles Chart and released many successful singles there. Universal Music Japan started managing their Japanese activities. They became one of the most popular K-pop groups in Japan. They performed there exclusively for three years, and became even more forgotten in Korea.

While in Japan, they were in their first scandal for answering a question in a Japanese show about plastic surgery. It was nothing scandalous, but their fellow Koreans attacked them for no reason. It was said that people were especially critical towards them because their 'scandal' happened really close to the KARA scandal and because they were promoting in Japan and "damaging the Hallyu image with such conversations."

The only thing they said was that basically, some idols do get surgeries and more and more people are becoming open about it and one member commented that plastic surgery is neither something that you need to be ashamed of, nor boast about. I know, so scandalous.

https://seoulbeats.com/2011/02/supernova-speaks-up-about-plastic-surgery-netizens-remain-pressed/

Each member had a lot of solo opportunities while they were promoting in Japan. From acting, hosting, solo songs, variety, the boys were booked and busy. They started getting more opportunities in Korea as well, but mostly solo work again.

During one of their promotions, Sungje suffered and ankle injury and kept performing under therapy and painkillers, which could've been so damaging to his injury.

At this time, they were managed by Maroo. Yunhak suddenly announced his enlistment in 2011 and people were curious as to why. He revealed that his original agency changed his birth year in his profile and that he wasn't actually born in 1984 but 1982, so he wanted to finish his military service as soon as possible.

From 2013 on, they continued releasing somewhat successful Japanese singles.

As they continued releasing music, they were hit by another scandal - the maknae Geonil was somehow blame for Jiyoung leaving Kara. Rumors said that they were dating and that he influenced her to continue her studies and go to school overseas because he, who is German-born, studied in England. Both refused to comment on those accusations (and so did their companies), but people who knew them said that they were close friends and nothing else.

In truth, Jiyoung's contract came to an end and she decided not to renew it and focus on her schooling.

Also in 2014, Sungje announced his military enlistment.

Supernova's 7th Japanese album "7iro" was released on September 9 and it placed first on Japan's Oricon Daily Chart, selling 21,909 copies within the first 24 hours of its release.

Soon after, the rappers of the group formed a sub-unit called Funky Galaxy and dropped an extended play, with the leading single featuring Avu-chan from the band Queen Bee.

More music releases continued, from solos to group songs.

In 2016, a lot of things happened for the group. Sungje came back from his military service, and the four youngest members followed in his footsteps and enlisted.

Sungje and Yunhak both released solo albums and a duo album while the others were on hiatus and both continued scoring roles.

But the most shocking news of everything was member Sungmo's DUI.

super.jpg

https://www.soompi.com/article/830563wpp/video-released-of-yoon-sungmos-drunk-driving-car-chase

Not just any kind of DUI, he made an illegal U-turn, ran from the police because he was under the influence until they cornered him in a blind alley. He also crashed into one police car, injuring an officer, and hit a telephone pole.

In 2018, their contracts with Maroo had come to an ended, and none of the members decided to renew. 5/6 members created SV ENT, which was to serve as their new office, while Sungmo signed with another company.

Each of the members got representation for other projects as well, for example their acting gigs and so on.

On January of 2019, member Sungmo announced his departure from the group. This came as shock to nobody, since it was suspected this would be the case since he didn't co-create their own company with the other five.

In April of 2020, Yunhak became the first celebrity to contract Covid 19. He had a short stint in the hospital and was discharged safely.

But this wasn't where this situation ended. No. He was discovered to be a superspreader. Not just that, it was discovered that the place he spread the virus at was an adult establishment and that the person who he was in contact with worked the oldest business.

When I say superspreader - I mean it.

https://www.asiaone.com/entertainment/k-pop-idol-yoon-hak-spreads-covid-19-woman-adult-entertainment-business-and-possibly

500 hundred people. That's how it went. He didn't quarantine at all when he came back from an overseas trip and he caused a chain reaction. He gave Covid to the woman, who gave it to her roommate, who spread it further, while Yunhak's adult entertainer friend went to work like normal and spread it among other customers and workers.

As it will turn out, this would not be his only 2020 scandal.

Yunhak and Sungje were among a hundred other people caught in a stint operation revolved around busting and online gambling ring.

https://koreajoongangdaily.joins.com/2020/09/15/entertainment/kpop/Supernova-gambling-Jung-Yoonhak/20200915165700396.html

The two members were charged with gambling overseas while on trips to the Philippines (between 2016 and 2018) and both of them claimed that they didn't visit with the purpose of gambling. 100 other people were caught gambling in this operation.

The situation doesn't end there.

https://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/art/2021/02/732_299964.html

One of the two has been accused of placing illegal bets on a site in Korea as well. I don't think it was ever revealed which one, but since his reputation has already been in shambles at the time, most people assumed it was Yunhak.

The scandals for the group don't end there - another shocker happened just recently.

Kwangsoo, a member without scandals known to be a hard worker who keeps a low profile, has been accused of wrecking a marriage of a famous Japanese actress, Shinohara Ryoko.

https://www.allkpop.com/article/2021/08/supernova-kwangsus-label-denies-extramarital-affair-with-japanese-actress-shinohara-ryoko

1628170271-20210805-affair.jpg

Shinohara Ryoko (48) divorced her husband of 16 years, actor Ichimura Masako (72), who is the father of her two underage children. The rumor mill claims that she left him due to an affair she had with a 14 years younger idol and actor who is also her neighbor. Netizens put two and two together and discovered it could be nobody else but Kwangsoo.

792ced3410e17ce69ffcf8621e963f3d-1628168

Kwangsoo and his agency denied these accusations, claiming that the two were just close junior and senior and nothing else, and of course they could be totally baseless and untrue. The rumor could just be based on the fact that a nosy neighbor saw them talking together, heard she was divorcing and decided to make a few extra bucks by tipping off a tabloid. At this point we don't know what's true or not, but I'm of the belief that it's better for everybody to end a loveless marriage than stay in it for any reason possible. Hopefully there was no cheating, but who knows.

Anyway, I'd like to end this by saying "STAN GEONIL"! His only 'scandals' have been allegedly telling somebody to continue their schooling and commenting that plastic surgery is nothing to be ashamed of, he's been unproblematic, he's been nothing but cute, tall and hot and is working his butt off starring in dramas, movies and shows.

I don't know what's happening in this gif but it's a scene from one of his dramas and he's basically acting for two people in this.

5%ED%9A%8C_6_1.GIF?type=w1200

He's steadily gaining more fans as well and I'm so happy that he's finally getting the recognition he deserves.

1. Why does it feel like this whole thread is a low-key stan Geonil campaign?

2. haven't read the name F.Cuz since 2010.

That was sort of my agenda, yes WHATEVER DO YOU MEAN, WHY, I'D NEVER (even though I've only learned of him last year and have just been following his career casually, I feel like he deserves the world).

Also it took me like 3 hours to find all this info and write this and I was so nervous nobody would read it so thank you so much for commenting. :lovestruck:

You're welcome! It was interesting cause I know Supernova only as the group that is solely known in Japan until the scandals.

This is the first tmie I've seen Geonil. Yeah, he deserves better but I'm glad he's at least working and his fandom is growing.

I don't think they've ever had an international fandom as we know it from what I can tell. Just a Japanese fandom, a small fandom in the Philippines and SK and that's it. I was looking them up last year when I posted that thread about 100 people being caught in a gambling operation and saw their profile and saw a really cute photo of Geonil and wanted to know more and the more I saw of him, the more likable he was. His acting is decent, he's funny and nice, he just didn't have the best luck in companies, group nor members. He's given me nothing but good vibes and if recent scandals had anything to show me is that my gut is more right than wrong about those things. I think he's a better fit for an actor than an idol at this point. I've wondered how he would've done if he debuted in another group, considering he had the looks, height and was a pretty good dancer.

Hm I don't think he was talking about himself and from what I can't tell he didn't change much about himself, but yeah he looks good! He definitely got the subtle actor combo when he made his transition, but even just a haircut was enough (though I miss his pretty long hair so much).

He would've fit well in KNK if they had debuted earlier. He does give off actor vibes though, especially in this hot pic:

Once upon a time they were only known for TTL and being active in Japan

Yep, and now they're the group with the massage parlor visiting Covid superspreading gambler, and there's another gambler, an alleged adulterer, Jihyuk's unfortunate second nosejob and Geonil. It's sad that this is what they're mostly known in their own country for.

TTL exists

Also I miss seeing Jiyoung and Geonil together

A bop! I hate that Japanese gossip sites ruined one of the nicest public celebrity friendships back then.

I remember seeing one of their songs charting a looooong time ago, otherwise I've only heard of them through the DUI and dating scandal.

Also, OT but you've been working very hard making all these threads for us, OP. The efforts didn't go unnoticed!

Thank you so much! I've been having some free time while sick at home so I'm reading about lots of things, kpop history included.

They're still a group as far as I know, but haven't had any releases in years, yes.

Who?

Is this trolling? This is literally a deep dive on the group, everything you need to know to know who the group is is written in the OP.

I always knew them for their one visual member Sungje lol

Geonil I saw playing the brother of a lead in the drama Red Shoes (he only appears in like one or two episodes). Never seen him play lead.

Didn't know the other members were THAT problematic. Also they were managed by MBK/CCM just like T-ara (mnet once had the company as a subsidiary) I believe which is likely why they were put in Maroo later on.

Kinda sucks that the group flopped in SK so bad they had to be sent to Japan.
