ArticleChinese company Vivo caught trying to ride on BTS popularity

1. [+306] Why don't they use their beloved C-Pop artists instead, hmm?

2. [+249] Just China being China 😑

3. [+165] Looks like they'll start claiming BTS as theirs too...

4. [+73] It's fine if they're jealous but please don't cross the line ㅋㅋ If they think they're so much better than everyone else, why do they keep copying our culture? ㅋㅋ

5. [+35] Oh China..

6. [+17] China being China

7. [+15] Does it make them feel better if they act like this?

8. [+1] Why do they keep being like this...

Do these ppl know that before BTS's existence, ppl used widely BTS acronym as "behind the scenes" like behind the scenes footage and all that?

They know. It started off as banter among Army's but as BTS's popularity grew, Army's started flocking to every video that had "BTS" in the title. I remember watching Ariana Grande's BTS video for "No Tears Left To Cry" and all the top comments said that they thought Ariana was collabing with BTS. It became worse when Bighit announced that BTS's english acronym no longer stood for "Bulletproof Boy Scouts" but became "Beyond The Scene" instead.

BTS should be the ones changing their name. they should just be called Bangtan or whatever means their acronym now (i remember that they changed when they started to get popular in Western bc their previous name was ridiculous but i don't remember for what they changed it)

BTS is the acronym of "behind the scenes" and it is been used for way before bangtan was even dreaming to born. many videos of movies/series/music videos/etc use it in the title and i am sick of always seeing army commenting on those videos/posts (even if it as a joke) that the video is false advertising bc there is no BTS in it and they are using the group's fame for views :twitch:🤦‍♀️

what?! they changed their acronym to beyond the scene?! that is quite close to the actual meaning of bts (aka behind the scene).
wtf. their company is shady af

even more now I stand by what I said.  their should change their name to bangtan and leave the bts acronym alone bc it just confusing. people will not stop using bts as behind the scene even bc more people know bts as behind the scene than bts as the kpop group. it's just annoying at this point

Who would search an acronym for a phrase people commonly use even before your oppas were born so much for it to be on the top searches? But I guess congrats on beating out "behind the scenes" hope it makes you feel real good to have it on your record idk

Even as a fan I know that the acronym is still being used for “behind the scenes”. The amount of times I’ve seen people using it in the past week.

While this is 100% true, and Armys have been VERY silly about the casual use of "BTS" for "behind the scenes"...

even as a nonfan, I must admit, the usage has increased. It seems intentional to me. They realize that writing "BTS" instead of "behind the scenes" just magically generates 1.5x the clicks. It's weird.

It's literally just search engine algorithm guys. It's not that deep.

Army's need reality check that kpop is still and will forever be niche. Including bts. Fandom power may chart them but most people (idk other countries, but for US I know) really don't know them. Its so tiredt how army are always mad at someone for 'using bts for clout' it is not that deep 😭 no one gives a fuck really. And what does using bts really get them.. Fans interest for 2 seconds when the same fans will chew you out for the slightest indescretion... I really don't think celebrity or company care that much. Just let ur faves be famous without it getting to ur head. The spiral these bitches are gonna have when their favs peak and inevitably declines 😐

Oh, they know but they don't care.

Tho the color of the font...lol. I'm not surprised the one who did this is an army themselves.

Honestly, the usage of BTS for marketing purpose on this Vivo ad is conceivable. Using "BTS" acronym to spell out "Be there soon" isn't blatant ? lol
You don't need a PhD in marketing and business to grasp the idea of brands using the trendiest words, memes, artists, influencers etc... for business growth.

It does becuase I never thought a kpop group would be big enough to outweigh it in searches, for example, how most Golden Child searches pull up the Eddie movie becuase Golden Child arent successful enough to take up top searches

...uh what?

Terms like "BTS footage" has been used way more than "behind the scenes footage" long before BTS even debuted because it's shorter to write out. I rarely ever see "behind the scenes" spelled out in filmography.

I've certainly seen plenty videos titled "behind the scenes", so I don't know what to tell you. But more recently, perhaps within the last 10 months, I've seen "BTS" used more liberally than before.

I should have been more clear, it's not always in video titles, sometimes it's YouTube thumbnails and the like.

Either way, I know I'm not tripping balls about this. Even if companies or artists or media productions aren't explicitly aware that the algorithm does this thanks to the influence of "Bangtan Sonyeondan", I think there is at least partial awareness that "BTS videos" (behind the scenes videos) generate substantially more traffic than they used to.

It's not because "army are stupid and click on anything that says BTS", I don't know if that's what you guys think I'm implying. (although this probably does apply to YouTube thumbnails to some extent) I'm saying that search engine algorithms probably can't differentiate between "BTS, media content" and "BTS, media content".

If someone here wants a real answer: Not far in the countries where Hybe trademarked BTS as a brand name, which they probably did in US, Europe, Korea and Japan. Trademarking anything in China is basically impossible (very difficult) so. Also the company won't go after small brands because it doesn't pay off much, but they will go after big brands in the places where the brand name is trademarked

Example
people who use BTS in these listed product categories in USA can be sued and Hybe would win the lawsuit

idek how the topic diverted to how "bts" is supposed to be behind the scenes when it's obvious as fuck these brands are taking advantage of the BTS brand name and trying to misled their consumers. even in my country so many small f&b establishments are doing it despite BTS having trademarks registered here. the users here are a whole level of dumb and delusional. and i'm speaking as someone who actually has experience in branding so all yall dumbasses pls stfu and stop making yourselves look like clowns. it's ok to admit that brands are leeching off bts the group, so stop lying to yourself these brands are doing this while thinking of "behind the scenes" lmfao.  moreover the vivo ad didn't even use "behind the scenes" and did Be There Soon instead LMAO

onehallyu has truly reached its bottom. we used to have intelligent users but now it's been infiltrated by dumbass kpop fans who clearly need to go back to school and develop some critical thinking skills
