i disagree. idols already hide so much about themselves. some stuff they don't have to, but they do so due to fear of being seen as unperfect by fans or worse. so when they mention or have slip ups like this it gives more insight about them. being the #1 group doesn't change my opinion either. that just an exscuse some people like to use to silence them, in my opinion.

if anything, this is one of the few things they should probably just keep to themselves. unless they are outright condemning and reflecting on it because they realize it was not good. stuff like this promotes eating disorders. not only to fans but to other idols. as influential as he is, he must be careful about it.

while i personally don't care to hear about extreme  or crash diets either...i also don't think it's right for fans or non-fans to feel they have the right to control idols. to police what idols can say and do. it's this exact mindset why idols tend to keep their struggles to themselves. and then years later when they start revealing the darker sides of being in the industry suddenly everyone is so shock and wondering why idols never talked about these things earlier. the blame game starts all over again. also as i said earlier to that other user the amount of fame bts has doesn't change my opinion about them.

idols have talked about these things before yet the comments in this thread is all over the place o.o. often times people either sympathize with the idols, get mad at the industry and companies, or say uplifting things about why idols don't need to diet.

It is right when they could be doing harm. It's not like he's saying he was forced to do it. He very nonchalantly stated he starved himself for 5 whole days to look barely slimmer in the face. it sounds like something he chose to do on his own. typically it IS good when idols talk about all the horrible shit the COMPANY makes them do. that's not the case here.

it's not even about BTS being #1 necessarily because it applies to anyone with impressionable fans, but you're acting like it totally doesn't matter that this is coming from the same man who caused Downy FABRIC SOFTENER to sell out. like, we're saying idols should not be talking about this stuff as if it's just okay, because it promotes unhealthy behaviors.

for the last part, it's only half true. many of my fellow OH users have always been against idols promoting starvation. one thing I like about SHINee is that although of course they have talked about dieting, they have NEVER promoted starvation, and they never will, because they understand their responsibility to their fans. They always tell their fans that they do not need to be dieting. That's what needs to be done across the board.

While I think that celebrities are not responsible for the actions of their fans, I also agree that this was probably unecessary to say? But it seems to be not intention, more of a slip of the tongue. Sad this seems to be a common mindset for the K-audience that extreme dieting is ok.

On another note, I'm actually not surprised to hear he did this? As soon as I saw him in the music video, his face looked really slim/kinda sunken.. I knew he had to have done some type of restrictive diet for that.

If it's true im just sad that he feels the need to do that. He already looks so good! The pressure on celebrity to look a certain way and fit a certain visual standard is way too high!

He already has gorgeous body and he works out the most out of them all too. I doubt he does this routinely, probably only for the comeback mv(i do hope he eat plentiful afterwards) but it's such a dangerous and reckless thing to do.

Of course I don't work for Bighit, but I also don't think the company forces him. I've said since the beginning the blame is mostly due to the industry overall. There's a lot pressure to be perfect. Whether that's from direct or indirect forces.

If it's not about BTS being #1, then I don't see the point of even mentioning their fame tbh. People constantly bringing it up their popularity is becoming overplayed at this point, lets be real. BTS are just as vulnerable and victims to this dark industry like any other celebrity. Being popular don't make BTS super humans or something...

It's one thing being against  bad diets, it's another thing entirely claiming certain idols are "promoting starvation".  In most threads I've seen about idols bad diets on OH it's rare to see some of things being said with in the comments here. Idols talking about their diets or having slip up is not necessarily "promoting". And it's really weird that some of y'all continue to use that word. Ok, great for Shinee they've never spoken up about certain things. And??? ok... Of course,  do remember we don't know what struggles happens behind scenes and we don't know why certain idols are able to talk about things while others don't.

I'm all up for idols to share they experiences and denouncing their injutices and mistreatments. This in my opinion is one of them, the thing that people are most concern about is not that they cant share it is that they are approving of this behavior, making it a light comment when it can cause so much damage, specially when someone was such a big and young devoted fans. There is a channel called Angelina on youtube where she touches up in this topic more in depth.

People can be open about their secrets but you do have to be careful and mindful not to promote negative life styles or life choices another example is AoA Mina's sharing the excessive cutting and suicidal thoughts, this is something she should talk with a professional, not sharing it with a young immature fanbase.

What an amazing message he’s giving to his young fans.

This was definitely my initial reaction (in a "not this again" way) but sometimes I wonder if this shit is a cry for help

There will definitely be "Jungkook Butter Diet" videos on Youtube now of people not eating for 5 days and delightfully influence younger kids that they need to do that for some reason, like thx Jungkook, that's very hashtag pro-ana of you

But surely these adult men know better??? Is it a cry for help?? I seriously think it is

edit: when I say "surely these adult men know better", I mean to talk carelessly about starving yourself knowing that you have many young and impressionable fans to whom you are marketing a message of self-acceptance. I'm not saying "surely they know better than to starve themselves", obviously they are under external pressure to do so.

There's so many "XYZ diets" on Youtube. I just went on youtube to search if anyone has followed a BTS diet and I saw a few.

I'm a fan and I don't think he should have said this unless it is a cry for help. Younger fans are more susceptible and easily influenced by what their faves do or say.

The Youtube videos are really bad. Every time an idol describes a diet, there are Youtubers who mimic it in videos, and there are kids and teenagers who watch these videos and are influenced by them. I find it exhausting to even talk about. I've just seen a lot of it with my own eyes. I don't blame the idols directly because it definitely speaks to a larger (and multicultural!) problem, but yeah. Every time an idol makes a remark about dieting like this, there's a direct snowball effect that leads to people starving themselves in imitation. It's really sad. Sometimes it's not directly stuff like "Wow I need to do exactly everything that Jungkook does" but more like "Wow I bet Jungkook would think I'm so fat since I can only go 2 days without eating"

It exhausts me to think about

Their message travels fast and wide, can't he just lie? Jimin too said some weird stuff on their VLive, and all I'm hoping is that I read a mistranslation.

My only guess -and it'd be ridiculous in for this MV- is for muscles to show more. Henry Cavill also goes on these kind of dehydration diets before shooting a scene without his shirt on. But I see no naked torso here to go with this theory

Spoiler

OOT I've wondered why idols can't just lie and say they've eaten all their meals, rested and took care of their body and diet with professionals. I'd rather find out that the idol lied to avoid promoting unhealthy stuff -probably k-nets would praise them- than have these horrible messages floating  on the internet.

Exactly. I don't blame the idols either. I blame the pressure that the companies put on the idols to be perfect. I blame the public for nitpicking EVERYTHING. This isn't healthy at all. Your body isn't meant for quick diets. They're very dangerous. I follow an actual dietician on social media and she says you can eat your favorite foods but be more active. Be mindful of your portions. All of that stuff.

Surprised? That is his world. What he has been doing since he was a teenager and what he saw every day... He was alone away from his home. He spoke to his parents on the phone 3 times a month "basic greetings" and  he went to his house 3 days a year. Once his family was not even there when he went to visit. He hardly went to school.

His world and influences is what he has around 24/7.

The first time I felt something strange was in this clip:

JM and JK both having breakfast from the same little bowl... jm hides his bared face when got surprised by the camera
So you see jm on that show all the time looking in the mirror worried about his weight (because of the filming he is forced to eat for the show)

If you watch the content footage from the early years, jm is always talking about his weight ... at one point, jk begins to do the same.

From an interview in 2014:

https://kimmy-trans.tumblr.com/post/105997465811/q-during-dark-wild-showcase-you-guys-mentioned/

'Q: You’ve all lost a lot of weight.

Jimin: We wanted to show a manly image.

Rap Monster: Jimin takes care of his body the most.

Jin: He only eats one meal a day.

Jimin: It was only in the past. Now I’m taking a good control.

Jin: When he was eating one meal a day, I really worried about his health and told him that he would get ill. And then he started to eat regularly so I didn’t need to worry. Then afterwards, Jungkook copied him and started to eat one meal a day. Then Jimin told Jungkook that if he continues to be on diet like that he would get ill. Haha.

Q: What one meal a day?!

Jungkook: Lunch.

Jimin: I ate between breakfast and lunch time.

Jin: From 10 months before our debut, I only ate two pieces of chicken breast a day. I tried and I was starving. So I tried to stop the dongsaengs, but they didn’t listen. I think they have to experience it themselves to understand.

V: Before debut, we all had to be on diet. When we made sandwiches to eat, we had to get rid off the all the fat/ oil, even on the tuna. (Rap Monster: It tasted so bad.) Rap Monster hyung and I were like what should we do to get out of this?

Rap Monster: How can we go to the convenience store without getting caught? Hahaha. But Jimin didn’t cheat. Because he was concerned that he looked chubby on the camera. Everyone has their own priorities, right. V and I control what we eat, but these members are doing it too much, we are like “ah… we need to eat to live so eat a little bit more.” In fact, the amount of exercise is seriously a lot even if we’re only practicing the dance choreography, so even if we eat a little bit more, we won’t put on weight.

Q: Jimin seems like the type that would to be very harsh on himself.

Rap Monster: He’s strict with himself.

Jimin: But compared to Jungkook… haha

Rap Monster: Jungkook is an alien.

Jimin: I take good control of my meals, but Jungkook is the type that thinks ‘ah, do I need to lose weight today?’ and then he wouldn’t even eat one meal.'

In the 130112 vlog, Jin says that his boss always tells him that he gained weight when he sees him but he doesn't thinks like that and he doesn't feel a difference.

In the vlog130214 Jimin says that he is going to lose weight because he is a pig and he is not cute and he is going to follow Jin's example. JK says that he will do the same.

In TakeCareofMyFridge 170730 Jin says that he only ate 2 packages of boiled breast for almost 1 year and that he suffered from malnutrition.
Jimin says that in order to climb the attractiveness ranking, he stopped eating for BST promotions.

In  Rookie King ep4 Jin says that a manager keeps calling him a pig and telling him to stop eating.

Interview with Jin 2015:

https://kimmy-trans.tumblr.com/post/112318305646/aj-x-the-star-vol-1-bts-jins-part/
Dieting was so  so that he started to cook for himself. He says that being on diet was the most difficult time after debut. They live with their manager and were strictly monitored. One day when their manager wasn’t at home, the members couldn’t endure the hungriness any more so they secretly ordered fried chicken to eat. They were so excited and was about to eat the chicken, the entry phone at the front door started ringing. Jin panicked so he hid the chicken, but while he was doing that, the members all ran away. He says that day was seriously a bad day. And when the door opened, it wasn’t the manager but it was one of the members. It was a lucky misfortune but he felt sad. It was in a rush when he was putting away the chicken and it got ruined, so he had to throw it away. “Because this kind of incident destroys our friendship, I hope this won’t happen again.” It was a funny episode from the dieting period. Now, the members are taking care of their diet themselves. Perhaps you can say that it has become a habit of their daily lives to eat small portions every day and exercise every night.

Q: Have you ever ran away from the dormitory?

A: All → NO

JUNGKOOK: 「It’s not only because our manager lives with us but there was nothing we could do if we ran away. All of my friends are in their own provinces. And nowadays, since our schedules are packed, my whole body is feeling the wonderfulness of sleeping (laughs). All of us, when we fall into a deep sleep, we will sleep for 14 – 15 hours.」

https://kimmy-trans.tumblr.com/post/120471476516/2014-april-issue-high-cut-japan-bts-trans-q/

JIMIN 「When I was exercising (my muscles) in the kitchen, I heard someone sobbing inside the room. So I asked as a joke『Jungkook ah, why are you crying?』but he was actually crying.」

JUNG KOOK 「Jimin, you also cried when you wanted to see your parents, right.」

JIMIN 「Eh? Me?」

JUNG KOOK 「You cried~. You were crying really loudly in bed like『wa~ang~』Don’t pretend that it didn’t happen.」

JIMIN 「I don’t remember~! Anyways, the crybaby among us is Jungkook.」

All this Idols starving themselves to reach an unrealistic type of beauty. Every time there is a comeback all groups only talk about either diet,"becoming prettier", or how little they sleep. I think is better to ask why the company or the people like this certain image instead of blaming one person for trying to please their fans/company.

It's body dismorphia, because I genuinely don't think anyone in BTS is overweight or needs to diet. Same goes for all the idols. It's unrealistic but their society praises itself to be tiny. I don't see many idols/actor's saying encouraging words about their body. Being body positive is not a thing in their world I guess.

I was going to comment earlier but I had to gather my thoughts. I truly believe that idols are put into this pressure of being so perfect that they do develop body dysmorphia. Even G-Dragon has acknowledged that he was too skinny during his MOTTE tour due to the pressures of touring and to appear as GD. He put on a little weight (still was skinny) and his fans were like "he has a tummy now!"

yea kpop industry is crazy with the Korean standard of skinny

"The 26-year-old South Korean singer, actor, fashion designer and television presenter joined the recording for MBC's Radio Star in light of SHINee’s 10th-anniversary comeback. Key (Kim Ki-bum) then revealed that he had to go through a strict diet to maintain their title of “Skinny Idols.” [...] "I was called fat for the first time in my life after joining SM [Entertainment],“ Key said. The SHINee singer then shared the techniques that he tried in shedding off the pounds. (source)

key is  not the only one. many idols go through their life healthy at a normal weight growing up but as soon as they join the industry it all goes down hill due to the pressure place on them by staff, fans and industry in general at such a crucial age.

I feel so bad for them. Even TOP suffers from it. He was overweight growing up and in order to join YG he had to lose the weight. Now he gets really  skinny possibly due to body dysmorphia.

I wish someone was there for them all and tell them they don't need to lose weight.

Okay this is just fucked up. How do the parents not get sad hearing this from their kids.

When I was growing up I did ballet, we had to train for hours and hours and be on diet. But my body is different and I was taller than most of them, so I looked really skinny. My parents looked at the diet the teachers gave us and went off on them. Even when I was training in the middle of night in the hallways, my parents checked in if I wasn't overdoing it and made me go to bed. Even now after 15 years if they hear me talking about my training days, my mom gets cold shivers. How do these parent allow their kids to go through this? That is really were the responsibility lies. Companies will always take advantage of young impressionable children, but their parents should be the ones making sure that their kids are healthy and safe.
