Not surprised. SM loves making remakes

F(x)'s Hot Summer

original: Monrose's Hot Summer

SHINee's Juliette

original : Corbin Bleu's Deal With It

SNSD's Dancing Queen

original: Duffy's Mercy

Wasn't Mirotic a remake of a song from a western female artist too?

one thing that’s annoying me is that people are suddenly saying aespa has no original songs… like… did you guys suddenly forget black mamba, their literal debut. they literally only have three songs in their catalog. and it’s the sm tradition for girl groups to remake a song for their second digital single.

it’s not really surprising. only new kpop fans are finding this absurd because they obviously weren’t here during ses, suju, tvxq, gg, shinee, f(x) remaking songs… and it’s not a bad thing either.

pretty sure buying a song costs more than having your in-house producers create one lol

Yep, since you still gotta pay producers to remix it to suit the group, as well.

Forever was their remake of a song. That's prob why they're all annoyed that this one is also a remake.

I wonder how the Aespa version is going to sound like, F(x) "Hot summer" had a completely different vibe from the original, I hope it's the same for this.

it did? it sounded like a straight up remake to me. Right down to the adlibs at the end, it's essentially beat for beat the same, the only difference being Amber's short rap. There's a direct comparison on Youtube.

Remake song for a remake group, perfect

That's a really stupid thing to say when knowing that BTS did make plenty of covers and remakes... 😑

I’m going to reserve my judgement until I hear their version but I’m not feeling the original. hopefully they’ve made changes to make it sound superior.

pretty sure their comeback before this one or whatever was a remake too. so technically this will be their second one. at this point, sm has only given them one original so I can understand where their fans/people are coming from tbh.

This song is not a remake tho. SM bought this song, therefore Aespa's version will be it's own song (lyrics won't be the same, probably will change the pitch and structure of the song). Forever and Be Natural, for example, were remakes, same lyrics/melody/structure etc etc just different singers, this song is technically not a remake.

I'll make a better example, Dancing Queen is not a remake of Duffy's song Mercy, they are considered 2 songs with the same instrumental.

There is a difference between buying a song and remaking a song.

my point still stands. we can argue about technical terms but the reality is still the same. the upset that this is receiving stems from the fact their last cb was a remake and its being followed up with a sample/remake. as of right now, the only song they have that is original is their debut song. you can argue about it but that’s the perception at the moment for most. it’s even on the very title of this post too.

like I said, I’m not fully invested in this and will reserve my judgement to what aespa puts out.

yeah! which was why i said it's sm's tradition to release remake songs for their girl group's second single (f(x).... has always been an exception), which was forever.

i get being annoyed, but i also don't get why people are acting like they don't have a single original song in their discography... when they only have three, when they've all been digital singles and not a mini-album of remakes, and when it's pretty normal of sm groups to buy out instrumental/sample songs and remake them. did people forget that snsd's tell me your wish was a single by nathalie makoma prior?

I... no your point doesn't stand lol, you can't call a remake a song that was bought and changed.

And at the moment I have seen only a couple of people have this perception of them, buying songs is very common in the music industry (moreso in SM), so I'm not sure why you're so disappointed.
