why do boygroups sell more than girl groups

Probably because traditionally, majority of idol fans have always been straight young women and they're usually more attracted towards bgs. However nowadays there's many ggs that are starting to sell as much or more than many bgs (Twice, Izone, Blackpink sell 500k-1M, RV/Mamamoo/G-idle/Itzy sell 150-200k, and even some mid tier ggs like Loona, WJSN, Dreamcatcher etc sell over 100k despite not having hit songs) so things are changing.

Also ggs have much more casual listeners and GP attention, which leads to more digital hits, CF deals, variety shows, etc so at the end it's balanced.

1. female fans in almost every music industry around the world tend to be more loyal and dedicated to the artists they follow.

2. boy groups tend to have more female fans.

In fact the ggs that last longer and/or sell better are precisely the ones with more female fans, like SNSD, A Pink, Twice, BP, RV, etc.

yep, if a gg is selling well (in general doing well with the public too) most likely it's due to having more female fans then their peers.

Sexism. Gender Roles. Male Privilege.

Men are able to build a dedicated fanbase of "girlfriends".

Women can't do this with the opposite sex quite as well.

SK is a male-dominated society, where many women are socialized to aspire to be a wife and a mother, and they wait to be "picked" by a man. In the relationship, the man leads, and the woman follows. This creates a culture where it is more expected for a young girl to be obsessive with a male celebrity, and not so much for a young boy and a female celebrity. Because the boy is supposed to have the power, obsessing over one girl is seen as uncool. Furthermore, women are objectified more and so their individualism is taken less seriously. When you fail to capture someone on a deeper level, it's less likely they will become a dedicated fan. So most of the men in Korea see girl groups are something to be enjoyed casually, not obsessively. They often do not engage with them further than "a pretty girl" or "a talented girl". Boy groups, on the other hand, often joke that they are dating their fans, and more often cultivate very loving, caring, protective fans. Due to misogyny, a girl group trying have a fandom of "boyfriends" would be criticized. Female idols are supposed to be waiting to be picked, not doing the picking.

I think this generation, girl groups are trying to appeal more to girls, but obviously most women are straight, and platonic interest is not as strong as romantic interest. And I suspect this is why we are seeing more queerbaiting amongst girl groups lately as well.

literally this

I disagree girlfriend comments, fans who believe girlfriend idea, are usually not allowed to spend more than what their parents give, you wouldnt get high sales with those alone lol but females are usually more loyal, both in real life and fandom life. This applies to western groups as well.

Pretty much. Girl groups have bigger success. Boy groups have longer success.

I'm sure if you did a video on SINGLE/SONG sales, girl groups would dominate that list.

It's just that the stuff boy groups excel in (album sales, concerts) are what give an artist more money and longevity.

the only places of which you could find loyal male fans are in genres like Rock/Metal of which you could see a boy band followed by an ocean of male fans don't know why that doesn't happen with idol boy groups! but I guess it's as simple as idol bgs just don't target same sex fans

Agree. The whole idea that female fans only stan because they see male idols as "boyfriends" is...the generalization is problematic in so many ways. And quite honestly sounds like something men tell themselves to justify why boy groups are so popular in Korea. I do agree to capture someone on a deeper level is important. However certain people seem to think girls/women can't like a boy group for deeper reasons other then wanting to be their "girlfriend".

Pretty much this. But nowadays more ggs are being able to last pretty long as well. I mean, many ggs are surpassing 5, 7 and even 10 years when before they lasted around 5 years at most.

Idk why people are bringing "male privilege" and "girlfriend fans" when both bgs and ggs have privilege in certain areas. Bgs are still more likely to have bigger fandoms and dedicated fans but ggs get MUCH more public attention. Just look at the amount of mid-tier ggs that have at least 1-2 hit songs while most bgs rely completely in their fanbase because they GP just don't bother to check them out.

not only idol boygroups, it applies normal boygroups as well, even if they never aim for females, its usually not their concious effort to get female fans for many of the groups, its just what happens in my view. Then they just act according to their fandom, so it always gives an image like they aim for female fans, girlfriend fans.

For metal rock etc, they have huge male base, but their fans are usually alot more mature at least most are from what i saw age wise. If we consider age wise, boygroups too interestingly have quite older male fans as well, usually around 50s to 60s in Korea, depending on their concept, I believe i saw them with Seventeen and Astro especially. So for me, its maturity level of fans, concept AND what other males sees boygroups, too many varying situations and not as simple as girlfriend idea.

It was always like this, god knows how many unintentionally belittling ideas women have without even intending. Like you said, males themselves dont like boygroups, solely because they are popular men that people support at times. The idea you mention at the end, i see it alot with other women themselves on twitter, that stan ggs, people seem to be unable to grasp that you can like a male idol without wanting to fck him. Sorry for being crude, but seeing everyone's effort just getting credited as they are fooling girls!! is just, sad. It would piss me off honestly.

idk if that's just Korean male thing but in other places what's hilarious is when you have girls only listen to female artists and men only listen to male artist so I can't tell you how many times men will ask why am I listening to a female artist as lmao or like some feel too shy to admit that they're listening to an artist from the apposite sex

but even then a guy listening to female artists is not that much of a problem but if a girl listens to male artist then people will start questioning her "oh she must like that type of men Haha" type thing

The only bgs that seem to have more male fans are those that have a more "artistic" or "self producing" image because guys take them more seriously as musicians. For example YG bgs (except treasure that's more teen-oriented) have a ton of male listeners, especially Big Bang at their peak. Beast/Highlight, Block B, SHINee, BTOB, EXO, BTS have plenty of male fans too.

idk if that's aKorean thing or its happens in certain places! I mean speaking for myself i have been a rock/metal fan since I was like 15 but the only western idol boy group I ever followed was Backstreet Boys and for Kpop it was 2pm

tbh I don't even bother looking up bg songs cause i just feel like it's much safer to just check out ggs releases for kpop almost like I am forcing myself to stay loyal to ggs for no real reason

The funny thing is that many gg stans in stan twitter (regardless if they're male or female) are the first ones that sexualize female idols so coming for bg stans and calling them "stupid h*rny fangirls" is really ironic. I get that girlfriend fans can be cringey but the same can be said of girlfriend/boyfriend gg stans.

Another thing I've observed is that gay male gg stans are applauded while lesbian bg stans are constantly questioned, called fake lesbians, etc. It's like they indeed inherently assume that every female bg stan only like bgs because they see them in a romantic/sexual way and not because they appreciate their music, talent, personalities, etc

lol do check out bg songs, i know there is alot of negative feelings about them at most times (like ll times honestly) but some do have great songs, I personally listen alot of ggs but I can never remove bg songs from my playlist as there is so many that i utterly love

That happens almost too many times, some fans even have girlfriends that go to concerts etc with them and they are still asked why they stan a bg. I also saw idea of fake lesbian from twitter gg stans for the first time? Its not accusing someone of being fake but acting like they are lesbian for clout, which is goddamn weird why would you do that?? About sexualisation, honestly I saw Yuna for example get sexualised as a joke so much, I never saw it with bgs in all these years honestly. Overall like always, its women judging other women for male ideas and opinions. Its sad.

male [macho] insecurities. popular boy groups add to their insecurities.

yea it's annoying.

true, it depends on the artists. men listening to some female artists can be seen as odd to their peers. e.g. it's not everyday you see straight american guys bragging about stanning taylor swift, destiny child, etc.

socially when it comes to music female fans have more freedom to listen to whoever they want [no matter the gender] with out being overly judged. however like you said some people will still question if they like that type of guy tho.

I mean, it's true that some people in stan twitter have faked their race or sexuality for clout or "to be accepted" but it's usually a minority from what I've seen? The thing is that gay male fans are almost never questioned why they mostly stan ggs while lesbian bg stans always get negative comments from both male and female gg stans. I've seen too many people telling lesbian fans things like "if you're a lesbian why don't you stan ggs instead"? which it's pretty shitty because...why tf are you assuming that people only stan based on romantic/sexual attraction?

As for sexualization, both male and female idols are constantly sexualized (for example Enhypen members are barely 15-19 and they get sexualized a lot lately in stan twitter) but my point is that it's ironic they label all the bg stans as "horny fangirls" when gg stans aren't necessarily better in that aspect.

I didnt saw enhypen members get sexualised, its very fkced up if its true honestly, only reason I remember Yuna is because i literally saw it yesterday tbh, there must be tons. What I tried to say is gg fans tend to act like morality in human form, when infact both sides are well, fandom, they do weird stuff, they do delulu stuff, there is absolutely no reason to assume bg fans stan for romantic ideas. Otherwise faking sexuality is something i see alot on stan twitter, like its some type of trend to be LGBT+, im glad you didnt saw because they are pure stupid, no one should. Otherwise, idk why they question lesbian fans, do they want them to have the delulu ideas they claim bg stans have and hate? idk the aim.

I saw the enhypen thing because I follow a few engenes and they're always reporting sexual comments towards the members, and it's really disgusting because it's usually +20 y/o fans calling the younger members like Ni-ki, Sunoo, etc "hot", "sexy", etc. But gg stans do exactly the same with underaged or barely legal gg members so idk why they act so high and mighty as if only bg stans could be messy. Many kpop stans in general are fcked up, not only bg stans.

Also yeah, they come for lesbian fans and call them "fake lesbians" probably to have a excuse and lump them with the fans they call "horny straight fangirls". It's like people can't accept the idea that bg stans without romantic/sexual attraction can exist.

Women not supporting other women is nothing new.

Um majority of girl group fandoms are women too. Most of all kpop fandom are women.

Why does everything NEED to have some sort of malicious intent or overly problematic element behind it?

Sometimes things are just the way they are for a good reason. In this case, it’s how most men and women just simply think differently, and how they both choose to spend their money.
