South Korea has the lowest fertility rate in the world for the second consecutive year. The country has now entered a crisis as there has been a severe decline in birth rates over the years.

According to the 2021 World Population Status Report released by the United Nations Population Fund on April 14th, Korea's total fertility rate came in last out of the 198 countries measured.

The total fertility rate refers to the average number of births a woman is expected to have during childbearing.

South Korea's fertility rate in 2021 stood at 1.1 children, which is less than half of the world average of 2.4 children.

As a result, South Korea has ranked last for two consecutive years. The last time South Korea didn't rank last was in 2019, when it ranked 192nd with a fertility rate of 1.3.

The percentage of the total population under the age of 14 was also the lowest with 12.3% of the population. This is also less than half of the world's average of 25.3%.

On the other hand, 16.6% of the population are aged 65 or older, an increase of 0.8% from last year, coming in at 42nd place among the 198 countries.

The average life expectancy in South Korea was 86 years for women and 80 years for men, ranking 4th and 19th place, respectively, in the world. The world average is 75 years for women and 71 years for men.

koreans aren't the type to have kids unless they know their financial situation is straight. which is the responsible thing to do. and with the way things are going with corona, its not an ideal atm.

meanwhile some irresponsible people from the Philippines and Indonesia can't control themselves when it comes to having kids. even during the pandemic and financial crisis 😒

“Can’t control themseleves” whitewashes the situation.

There is a lot of spousal rape going on, more commonly caused from emotional manipulation rather than physical violence, though that can happen too. A lot of wives concede to sex with their hasbands even when they make it clear they don’t want to because they see it as a duty to a relationship or because they just don’t want to start arguments. This is not a healthy relationship, but studies have shown this is a common factor in families with many children.

Also the reason they are not educated about protection is the same as the one as why they are not educated on spousal rape: poor people get poor education in general, and without good education they can’t get out of it. Poverty is a cycle.

why is it a crisis? first Japan now Korea like bruh who cares if they don't have kids lol

In older populated countries it's expected to have too few young workers to financially support too many dependent elders. So it might be a serious problem in the future.

koreans have way too many older citizens, it will pose a problem in a few decades. lack of manpower which will eventually affect their economy as well

Okay, look at my original comment and find where i blamed a specific gender. My comment still stands true. THEY cant control themselves.

Also You have other poor SEA countries where people have way less kids. Its not an excuse. You want paint a false narrative of rape but i guarantee you that is not what represents the majority of the cases just like "thyroid issues" does not represent the majority of the cases of obesity in america. So bringing that up is irrelevant. Its so easy to blame something else than to accept there are people geniunely fucking up and being selfish. Most of those people see those kids as their retirement plan .

We have the same issue here (Italy) and I don't think it's that big of an issue, even though it has to be managed well - there's far too many people, and not enough resources for them all to live a decent life.
