please read up on the Korean Democracy movement or the June Struggle or the Gwangju Uprising because it'll give you an understanding of why so many Koreans are angry about this drama. It happened not too long ago in the late 80s (in fact, it happened 3 years before I was born) and a lot of the victims from that time are still alive today. Also the NSA were brutal and during the democratic movement, they killed and murdered students who participated in the movement because they accused them of being communist spies...to have the male lead be a "secret spy" is a huge mockery towards the movement, especially when you consider that the whole reason the NSA tortured and killed all those protesters was because they accused them of being spies, and also the lead character's name is an ACTUAL NAME of one of the activists! Yeong-Cho, who Jisoo will be playing, was a known activist who empowered other female students to take action. Tae Kim of the blog Ask a Korean has covered why this is so problematic in his Twitter thread here, and Twitter user @gatamchun has also covered it on their Twitter as well. The Gwangju Uprising and Korean Democratic Movement was a heavily sensitive time period for them and they have a right to be upset about it.

Black comedy is also REALLY hard to pull off well, too. Also given that the writer herself was actually in university during that time period, many Koreans are saying that she should've known better.
