[theqoo] JTBC CLARIFIES PLOT FOR SNOWDROP + NATIONAL PETITION TO STOP THE DRAMA SURFACES

The following is the full text of JTBC's official position.

JTBC reveals its position on the controversy related to the drama 'Snowdrop'.

“Snowdrop”, which is scheduled to be broadcast in the second half of this year, is by no means a drama that undermines the democratization movement and glorifies the National Security Agency and spies.

'Snowdrop' is a black comedy that satirizes the presidential election in a confrontation between the two Koreas in the background of the military regime in the 1980s. It is also a melodrama of young men and women who are sacrificed in that incident.

As part of the unfinished synopsis was leaked online, various criticisms continued to arise based on specific sentences without context, but these are only speculations.

In particular, claims such as 'spies (from the North) sent to the South lead the democratization movement', 'the character reflects a specific person who led the student movement', 'beautification of the National Security Agency', etc. are not only completely different from the contents of 'Snowdrop', but also irrelevant to the intention of the production.

JTBC clarifies that the current controversy has nothing to do with the content and production team's intention for 'Snowdrop'. In addition, please refrain from making reckless criticism of the unreleased drama.

1. Black comedy? What kind of bullsh*t

2. Black comedy ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

3. You guys should know about what happened to Joseon Exorcist and act accordingly

4. National Security Agency f*ckers. What the f*ck is all this bullsh*t?

5. ?...... okok, let's make another Joseon Exorcist

6. But if that's really not the context, then just say clearly that there are no spies and no National Security in your plot?? What misunderstanding?? What kind of clarification is this??

7. Are they crazy calling this black comedy? F*ck

8. Please, stop bullsh*tting... seriously, this is even worse than Joseon Exorcist..

9. They already filmed the drama with the male lead as a spy so they can't deny the fact that he's a spy.

10. Calling that period of time "black comedy"? Are they insane?

People were killed after being labeled as spies and their families are still alive,
JTBC never said that the male lead was not a spy nor that they will change the name of the female lead, while claiming that the work is "black comedy"

[theqoo] [EXCLUSIVE] THERE WILL BE NO PPL FOR THE DRAMA 'SNOWDROP'

(T/N: There was a recent huge controversy surrounding another drama called 'Joseon Exorcist' due to the fact that the drama was distorting Korean history. The same thing is happening with Snow Drop. The story is set in 1987 and Jung Hae-in is playing a protestor (who later turns out to be a spy) while Jisoo is a nursing student. Netizens were saying how their characters' names were actual student protestors who were fighting for democracy at that time. A lot of students were killed and tortured by the authorities. So netizens were mostly furious because the drama was romanticizing that period, because of the male lead's back story, etc.)

While the SBS drama “Joseon Exorcist” ended early due to controversy over history distortion, the JTBC drama “Snowdrop,” scheduled to be broadcast in June, also has been embroiled in a history distortion controversy, and the advertising industry has been nervous.

As a result of interviewing Sports Kunghyang on the 26th, 'Snowdrop' is only recruiting production support and virtual advertisements without PPL (indirect advertisement). An official in charge of the advertisement for 'Snowdrop' who requested anonymity in this regard said, “Usually, advertisements are determined by the actors and the buzzworthy-ness of the work. In the case of a historical drama, it is difficult to mesh the product's brand (in the work), so it is difficult to sponsor.”

He said, "It is common for advertisements to be confirmed until two weeks before the broadcast, but the lineup of actors for 'Snowdrop' is so good, so I think there will be a lot of (ads)."

source: http://naver.me/GLK8E4v9

original post: here

1. They really think that this lineup is good...?

2. The PPL wasn't the issue here though...

3. So what? Just stop this drama

4. It's not just about PPL. As soon as an advertisement will be used, it will turn out in the same way as Joseon Exorcist. You advertisers better think about this well

5. PPL is not the issue here. The scenario as a whole is the problem...

6. Ok, so what?ㅋㅋ

7. But they don't need any Korean advertisers anyways. They are just trying to rationalize the Chinese oppression. They are framing a pro-Democracy protestors = spy. So once this drama gets exported to China, they will show them that Chinese people who are pro-Democracy = spy f*ckers.

8. Wow... crazy bast*rds.... once they get their China money, they can't see anything anymore

9. Wow just how much money have they received...

10. The lineup is good??????????????????????????????? But is the plot good though?

11. Why are they so slow? PPL isn't the issue here....🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

12. Ah... they make me want to barf

13. Yah JTBC, get wrecked

14. 🤮

15. Looks like China has spent a lot sponsoring this drama. CR.

I hope Blackpink's Jisoo would leave the cast of Snowdrop

I just hope Jisoo would leave the currently controversial drama, Snowdrop

I may not be a fan, but I really like her. She's really beautiful. I feel like she's going to get hate if she continues to star in that drama...

She is already successful enough as a member of Blackpink, she doesn't have to star in that drama.

I don't see any reasons why she has to star in that drama. She has nothing to lose. I just hope she would leave.

I'm saying this because I really like her.

pann
[+328][-12]

1. [+143][-5] She hit a big success as a Blackpink's member, she really wouldn't suffer from anything if she leaves this drama. I really don't see why she's still starring in this controversial drama. YG-ya, please get Jisoo the heck out of that drama.

2. [+104][-0] As a Blink, I also hope she'd leave the drama... Why does it have to be this drama?ㅠㅠㅠ It'd be nice if she was in any other drama...

3. [+75][-63] So the fans are only concerned about Jisoo? Well, just like what you guys said... Jisoo is already successful as a Blackpink's member. She has earned so much money, besides from this drama. But what about the staffs of the drama? They're losing their jobs because of this, they're the ones who suffer the most right here. Blinks, just make petitions for the drama to be stopped instead of expressing your concerns towards Jisoo right here.

4. [+43][-0] Realistically speaking, it's impossible for the main character to drop out of the drama all out of the sudden. I think the best thing to do is just to stop producing this drama.

5. [+27][-0] She is an impactful idol, I think it's better for her to not star in such controversial drama...CR.

BLACKPINK’s Jisoo said that she likes Korean history with her own mouth – Snowdrop starring

original post: theqoo

1. I guess she hasn’t studied modern and contemporary history yet

2. Didn’t she study contemporary history? If she learned it, she would never participate in Snowdrop;

3. She just liked it, but she didn’t study hard

4. She likes Korean history, but she hasn’t learned it yet

5. Bye…

6. BLACKPINK is so popular not only in Korea, Asia but also around the world, she should have thought about her influence and made the right decision, but…

7. She didn’t show anything in acting, but thanks to YG, she was easily cast in the lead role in a drama

8. No, but the lead role? Does she have any experience in acting?

9. Jisoo….. wake up now…..

10. I love Jisoo, but I don’t support this drama. CR.

JTBC “‘Snowdrop’ beautifying spies? Speculations, we would never do such thing”

original post: theqoo

1. It’s a black comedy that satirizes the presidential elections???

2. First, please explain the name of the drama

3. Black comedy…

4. Black comedy with the context of the democratization movement…?

5. Black comedy?? If you look at the synoptic or cast, that sounds like a bullsh*t excuse

6. Black comedy? Do they think we are fools?

7. Can the democracy movement and black comedy exist at the same time?

8. Why did the North-South confrontation appear in the democratization movement?

9. Black comedy? What kind of bullsh*t

10. Just stop this drama CR.

[theqoo] THE REASON WHY SEEING BLACKPINK JISOO'S THAI FANS PROMOTING SNOWDROP BY SENDING HER SNACK TRUCKS IS SAD

This was posted yesterday about her showing a proof of her Thai fans sending a snack truck to support Snowdrop

spacer.png
"Blackpink Jisoo, proof of Thai fans' snack truck "Thanks to Blink, the shooting set of Snow Drop is so bright... you're the best<3"

As you may know, Snowdrop is under controversy for this reason now

(article laying out the plot about it occurring during 1987's democratic movement revolving about spying from the other side of the movement)

However, this is what is happening in Thailand right now

spacer.png

"Military resignation and reform of the monarchy" Thailand's democratic movement intensifies.

Exert: Thailand, A military nomination of senators... Bill for national elections constitution failed.
Protest for democratization - Clash between the royalists and the protesters... Tear gas fired at the demonstrators.
Thailand, imprisonment if you insult the royalty.. Demands for monarchy reform

spacer.png

"Rubber bullets, tear gas bomb, and frenzy in flames in Thailand too... Demonstration for monarchy reformation"spacer.png

Eng version:

spacer.png

The same thing that happened here in 1987 is happening to their home country
However they're supporting the drama which directly undermines the events of the 1978 democratization movement.
Even after reading the synopsis, she started as a lead in the drama without much thoughts, posting a picture saying the atmosphere of the set is good
As a Korean, Jisoo didn't even say anything

original post:

It turns out that the activist student who participated in the June protest turned out to be a Nampa spy (Spy sent to the South)" The drama was made with this exact setting, and my blood seems to be flowing upside down. My mother, one of the activist students, actually got cornered by being labelled as a spy, it is not simply violation of the gypsy law, but she was imprisoned for violating the National Security Law.

original post: here

1. I bet the Thai fans didn't even know the plot and sent the trucks right?

2. Ah.... I hate this

3. The I-roaces aren't I-roaches for nothing. Even if they knew what the content were, I bet they would still support itㅋㅋ  Of course, there are people who probably don't know about it so I think that the biggest issue now is for us to educate them about this topic

4. Here and there, everyone's running around with their empty headsㅜㅜ  I'm not asking these actors to study our history, but there are literally movies about our democratization movement out there and they should be at least aware that our citizens have been wrongly tortured. These actors seem like they haven't studied Korean history at all sigh

5. Brainless brainless brainless

6. Sigh... An activist that turns out to be a spy. This drama is really undermining the democratization movement

7. The Thai fans aren't clear about the content about the drama and they're simply supporting her because it's Jisoo... That's why I believe that this definitely cannot air.... The ripple effects will be so severe once it's out... Tsk tsk

8. Do you know what's even more evil than this? The 5.18 democratization movement happened in 1980, May 18th. And the democratic uprising of June happened in June 1987. In other words, they're blending together the 5.18 democratic movement and the June uprising by creating this weird date May 18th 1987, which is blurring the dates of 2 significant moments: the 5.18 movement and the June uprising

9. I'm pretty sure the Thai fans aren't aware of this...?

10. Dumb and dumberㅋㅋㅋ  Like singer like fans. CR.

This is the same movement mentioned in JHope's line in 'Ma City', right?

On the side note, as much as I feel bad for Jisoo, her international fans are making it worst in twitter. As an outsider the one thing we could do is respect their sentiments and the cause they fought for. I'm pretty sure BlackPink has one or more adult/mature fans maybe they can share or explain within the fandom how sensitive the issue is and not always come on the defensive side.

Not sure what the general age demographics of Blinks on Twitter is like since I don't use Twitter, but I've seen Blinks on r/kpop who are understanding of the situation and why the drama is controversial among Koreans. Wonder if it's because Kpop fans on there there lean adult (according to their 2020 census result, 18-24 year olds make up the largest percentage of users followed by 25-34 year olds) compared to Twitter where most Kpop fans are young.

Hobi part is specifically about the uprising in Gwangju (his hometown) in 1980

But i think it all relates to this. It's all part of the same Democratization Movement.

There were many events through out a period of time.

Maybe someone can explain more about this tho

Good to know, at least there are fans who understands the situation.

j-hope was referencing to the gwangju uprising, which happened may 18 1980.

the drama is set on the premise on the June Democratic Struggle, which lasted june 10 to 29, 1987. the latter was what forced the govt to hold elections and essentially led to democracy and the present day government.
