JJ Lin Wrapup

JJ is someone that i have checked out before but could never really get into. He's pretty popular and has won a bunch of awards. Recently he won Best Mandarin Male Singer Award at the 25th Golden Melody Awards so it seemed like a good a time to pick him from the request list and feature him for an AOTW thread. For this request, I listened to Stories Untold and Lost N Found. I also listened to a bunch of random songs suggested to me by the people in the chinese/taiwanese fanturd.

My thoughts of him are better this time around. Before i thought he was pretty boring and didn't bother looking into him more. But after doing this I think he definitely has some good songs and it wasn't very hard to pick an album's worth for this list. I think most of the songs on this list is a ballad. His voice fits with that genre and it is easily his strength from what i've heard. There's a lot of feeling and emotion that goes into some of those songs which is what separates a good ballad from a boring one.

That voice that i just said good things about can also be irritating though. He can sound really whiny which can ruin songs for people and me too sometimes. It wasn't a big enough thing to bother me but I did notice it. He also has a lot of dull songs. For every emotional slow song there was a boring one that didn't do anything for me. It's why i feel that mixing up the genres is so important for albums but he really is ballad heavy. And when I said he is ballad heavy, i meant it. So if you like ballads check him out, if not then I don't think i can recommend him to you.

So many requests. I'm trying to go a bunch in a row so they don't sit there for too long. Some of these are artists that I also listen to but i'll try to feature a personal recommendation one that's not a requested artist soon. I don't know when. But if you want more recs, there's a new thing that just started called Listen To A Song A Day. It's where the chinese translations team picks and reviews a songs they recommend. It's a good thread go to along with this if you're new to cpop or want to expand your cpop library because it will be better at introducing you to a variety of songs from people with different tastes. So it's not just my tastes, though I am involved in that too. But yea, check it out. I'll put this in the shameless promotions section too just because. Does JJ have an official thread here? idek i should check before i post this...

Yes!  :ahmagah:

Haha, like every artist he isn't for everyone :) But I'm super glad that you've come to enjoy him a little more! Ballads are definitely his strong suit, I find that most of his less interesting songs tend to be when he tries the more pop-ish songs. So for people who are more into that...yeah, JJ may not be an artist you'd like.

I also found it funny that his "She Says" album were all songs he had originally written for other female artist xD would actually love to hear how these other artist would have performed them...

I like your sig ^^

A-Lin did a cover medley at Golden Melody one time and did She Says. I didn't know who JJ was at the time and i rewatched that video a lot so i kind of prefer her singing it.

And thank you!  :)

I LOVE him, then again, I'm a sucker for ballads and he has loads of them as you said :hurr: I understand his voice might not be for everyone but I don't mind it

Here's one of his recent performances :chu:

Maybe you should include some of your fav lives of the artists if you have any, it's always nice to see how good they are live :)

He's a talented guy and he only started getting real recognition in the last few years, which is ironic because I thought his earlier albums had much better and more enjoyable songs overall but I think my views dont align with golden melody critics lol. Even so hes written a lot of great songs and made some great music throughout his whole career.

I'd put him in the top 3 mandarin male singers, only behind Jay and Leehom.

All my fave songs of his are from his earlier albums though, his last few albums only have 1 or 2 songs that I can enjoy. Also, I think hes got a lot of good songs that aren't ballads.

My fave songs would be Mummy, No.89757, River South, Books, Killer and Waiting For Love, Mermaid, Tale of the Red Cliff, Little Dimples and Evolutionism.

It's worth noting for newer listeners that JJ is fluent in English (actually his English is better than his Mandarin) and he released a few English songs with his albums too like Cries In A Distance and Still Moving Under Gunfire which can be good ways to get to know him if you dont speak Mandarin. Also I found a interview in english from his small american tour a few years back. http://asiapacificarts.usc.edu/w_apa/showarticle.aspx?articleID=15264&AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1

JJ sounds amazing live, I was fortunate that he came back to Australia for another concert because I missed out on the 2010 one  :rlytearpls:  :ahmagah:

TBH, I love his first 2 albums more than the recent ones.  I still listen to Mermaid and River South  :ahmagah:

I think he's always been pretty popular, but i agree, his recent albums after sixology haven't been my favorite, he's had some good songs in the recent ones but not great albums. But i still love to hear him sing.

I think Golden Melody gave it to him because it was long overdue for him to be "recognized" by the judging panel. Stories Untold is not a very strong album but everyone has been waiting for him to win so this was finally the year. But it doesn't make the win any less deserved. Just like how Jay Chou was finally given best male singer in 2009 and 2011 for Capricorn and The Era which are far from his best work..

Yeah I agree that's why he was recognised but I disagree with it being awarded for that reason. Imo that's what lifetime achievement awards are for. The best singer award in golden melody should be for the singer who released the best music that year and for a judging panel that act so snobby I would have thought they'd follow their own criteria. Again, this is coming from a JJ fan, so I am happy he won but he didnt deserve it for that years work. Same goes for Jay.

Agree that Stories Untold was definitely not a strong album from him. Though You n Me is a cute pop song and Later to do has probably become in my top ten JJ songs, all the others were rather lackluster.

Disagree that his albums after sixology weren't great. Never Learn gave JJ a new sound, oddly nostalgic but still fresh. I liked that he was experimenting with the experience he had traveling through Europe. Just take out the We Together song and I can listen to that album on repeat. And 100 Days album has a lot of really great songs, so I would say that Stories Untold is just an anomaly of a relatively bad release.

And yes! His win was long overdue. Just wish he could have won when releasing a better album...:\

OMG, I am forever in love with her performance! All my favourites (for that year) in one hit. I've watched it well over 100 times  .

I am a big fan of JJ Lin and I have been for a about 4 years now. I agree with some of his recent albums not reaching extreme heights with every track, but there are some that I love and are up there with my favourites. å¥¹èªª, ä¸€åƒå¹´å¾Œè¨˜å¾—我 , å秒的è¡å‹•, å¸ä¸æœƒ, é‚£äº›ä½ å¾ˆå†’險的夢 and ä¸å˜åœ¨çš„情人 are amongst them. I also really like æ±Ÿå— and 害怕. The only English song that I like is probably 'One Shot'.

I was lucky enough to get a signed CD from him <3. But I want to see him live in concert so badly.

Here is a recent performance of å®³æ€•!
