Local residents are protesting against the construction of a mosque near Daehyeon-dong, Daegu, where Kyungbook University is located. They are even creating a campaign that opposes religious activities that take place in the residential area. Most muslim residents here come from Pakistan, Indonesia, and Nigeria. There are over 80 of them, they are International students who are taking Master and Doctorate degree in Kyungbook University.

September last year, four residential areas in Daehyeon-ro granted the permission to construct mosque, which falls into the 2nd category of neighborhood living facilities. The mosque was about 264㎡, it is originally a Korean-traditional house. On November 2014, 5 foreigners purchased buildings and performed religious activities in the back yard. On September last year, 6 foreigners purchased buildings and constructed a three stories mosque.

Local residents are fiercely protesting against the construction of the mosque, they claim to suffer from inconvenience due to the religious activities that take place. A resident explain, 'It is very noisy because people come in and out several times a day. They also make foods during the festival period and the smell is very disturbing. When they destroy the house, I thought they were going to sell it. It is very absurd to know that they're building a mosque'.

As the number of muslim International students increases, the area slowly becoming 'Islam Town'. The owner of the building next to the mosque claims, 'This area is now rumored as a Muslim residence. Now I can't rent out (rooms) unless if it's to Muslim. As the number of the Muslim residents increase, I worry I wouldn't be able to sell my building at this point"

  • Muslims are not harming us in any way, why are they acting that way?

  • The discrimination in our country is seriously no jokeㅋㅋㅋ The Muslim residents literally did nothing and yet they're hating on themㅋㅋㅋ

  • Ah! South Korea... The country where discrimination comes in naturally and normalized...

  • They perform religious activities a few times in a day, and it's really noisy when they do thatㅠㅠㅠ

  • The fact that you guys are treating them as if they were criminals can also be considered as racial discrimination too...

  • I don't know much about the religion but I think I understand what it means when people say 'Your head is full of shit'... If you know nothing about them, just shut up and learn more...

  • They're noisy and loud?? Churches are way noisier...

  • Judging from the article, I don't see anything wrong with them... They purchased the building, anyway. It's not like they committed crime or anything...

  • I think it's fine, as long as they're not forcing their Muslim way...? on Korean. I think the local residents should tolerate and understand them when they're having festivals or performing religious activities...

  • Guys, learn more about Muslim and their religions before you leave comments here...

  • Why are you guys normalizing racial discrimination...?

  • I've worked with a South East Asian before, they go pray at some times of the days and they also fast at some period of times. Other than that, they're just like us...

  • I'm scared...

  • Why are you selling buildings to foreigners...

  • We should accept all cultures and race equally. There's nothing we can do, anyway. It's not like we can kick them out.

Every culture and religion does this, a group of them will come into an area and generally take it over it just happens, at least they are aware of the Discrimination

Honestly you can find Pakistani Muslims almost anywhere in the world they will go anywhere and make it their home which is quite interesting, but from what I've seen from a Korean Youtubers Islam seems to be growing in Korean among the citizens which is also interest

They can also have a worship area inside university but I guess that would then be called "religious activity that will corrupt our kids11!1!2!"

Also they can just not perform any festivals there etc ,it's not norm to have them in mosque anyway. In such situation, wouldn't tlaking with mosque directly better?

I have to add... Some churches would ring their bells several times a day, my old dorm had a Baptist? Church right next to me, and it would ring it's bell from 9am to 12 pm, no one complained even if it literally makes your brain hurt. Let people do their religious activity ffs

Edit: omg comments that are not translated are disaster, there are so many that suggest kicking out everyone Muslim as they are "dangerous" what the

I guess most commenters were clueless about muslimeen and their mosque. The muslimeen pray 5 times a day starting from 5 am and, their mosque makes loud call before the prayer (azan) to summon peoples to the mosque. This is why the mosque is often complaint of noise.

About the party, barbecue smell can be disturbing if you're very close, islamic barbecue can be especially smelly because all the herb used.

Wait so people have put their own money into building and renting a place to pray and they're complaining? The food stinks? You guys really wanna go there. Pleasantly surprised that some comments are understanding and not bursting with hate. Leave them alone.

Someone needs to tell them that one mosque is not going to change SK's immigration policy. It's simply providing a place of worship for a population of people who have existed up until now (like foreign students who are studying abroad). With this level of ignorance no wonder so many k-netz wanted Trump to be re-elected.

? Islam is only an official religion in three SEA countries: Indonesia, Brunei, and Malaysia. In other SEA countries Muslims make up less than 15% of the population. For example in Vietnam, 73% of Vietnamese people are non-religious, 14% are Buddhist,  and 8.5% are Christian or follow a Christian-based religion. Muslims make up only 0.1% of the Vietnamese population and are primarily practiced by the Cham minority group

LOL There's no such thing as an Islamic BBQ that's the culture of the people that are practicing Islam, Like Pakistani, Bengali, and Indian Muslims would probably use Curry and other spices that may have a strong smell but if they were lets say American Muslims you'd smell hot dog and Hamburgers

P.S. Curry is delicious

Tbh depends!! We do have some strong food culture tho, if it's too strong you can start from Lebanese or Turkish kitchen then slowly switch to stronger kitchens °^°

We do have spicy food tho lol, and it's very meat heavy so it's understandable someone who is not used to would struggle lol (especially pepper flakes my grandma makes ugh I can't put more than 3 in a whole plate omfg)

Interesting! May I know what it is?

During ramadan, the muslim doesn't eat during daytime but will make and eat big banquet together after sunset. It depends on region but, in some countries, they grilled lots of beef or goat in each night. It's sited these muslim persons came from various countries. Some might come from countries of meat grilling culture.

My friend lived in a shophouse and complaint about the new neighbor next door who sold grilled chicken on both the smell and smut. Arabic grilled meat must be even more smelly.

Are you serious omG. I'm cackling.

Me and family are meat lover but we don't eat meat, let alone grilled meat, everyday, not even in ramadan. We still want to live, not to mention my parents are in 60s. You would find literally everyone grilling meat once a year in their home but we rarely use herbs. We are Muslim, and our country while not Islamic, majority are Muslims. So I'm not sure where "islamic barbeque" you're so fond of come from.

Tell your friend to 1) move, or 2) complain to the shop/landlord, if they don't like the consequences of living above food seller. "Arabic grilled meat" are delicious I'm sorry for your bland taste. And while at it, pack your uneducated ass from here 💀

Those who are mad are probably racist or xenophobic, I mean as far as I know A LOT of koreans are very conservative, so I dont think this religions' homophobia and misoginy is going to clash with koreans' values or something and just like with other religions Im sure there are muslims who are very open minded.

This comment is too ridiculous and ignorant to take seriously. For your sake I hope this is a pathetic troll attempt. Yikes

so basically your friend is mad that people are...cooking?

foods from every culture will have a smell. And some people will like the smell. Others will dislike it. But food smell is part of life lmao, you're just describing grilled meat, nothing particularly religious. Muslims have to eat too aksjjnbheurywi

just say you're  islamophobic and move on sis, stop trying to create messy, confusing and weak excuses

I hate it when they lump all of us together. There is a new disney movie doing that too. The difference of culture between the islands and the mainland should be noted more.
