[Article] Spotify Launches in South Korea

Spoiler

Spotify Launches in South Korea

FEBRUARY 1, 2021 - Today, Spotify is launching in the sixth-largest music market in the world: South Korea.* Koreans can now access over 60 million tracks and over 4 billion playlists from around the world, as well as enjoy personalized music recommendations and discover new music. Music lovers in Korea can stream Spotify’s broad music catalogue, spanning everything from the country’s own K-Pop to Latin American reggaeton, European electronic, and beyond.

Korea’s launch brings Spotify’s global footprint to 93 markets and is a critical next step in our global expansion journey. “We always want to be where the listeners and artists are, and South Korea is rich in both,” says Alex Norström, Chief Freemium Business Officer, Spotify. “This launch presents a massive opportunity for us to not only further our mission of bringing new and quality content to more audiences, but also help local Korean artists tap into Spotify’s 320 million listeners worldwide. We hope to create more opportunities for Korean artists across all genres to be discovered by listeners around the world.”

Since we debuted our first K-Pop playlist in 2014, the share of K-Pop listening on Spotify has increased by more than 2,000%—but music in Korea spans far beyond K-Pop. As a part of today’s launch, we’re introducing a range of new playlists made exclusively for South Korea. These curated collections offer the latest music from our team of Korean music experts across some of the most popular genres. Get ready for: (note: OHers links to below playlists provided on source website)

  • TOP Playlists: Korean Music Hot Now, FRESH! New Music Korea, Hot Hits Korea, Korean Music Rising, Today’s Drama OST Hot Now, K-Pop Daebak and more
  • Genre Playlists: TrenChill K-R&B, TrenChill K-Hip Hop, K-HIP-HOP +82, K-Are & Be, In The K-Indie, Korean City Pop, K-Rock Spirit, Folk & Acoustic Hot Now, Orchestra Korean Ballad and more

These new playlists will join the existing K-Pop genre hub that encompasses a wide range of Korean music, including K-Pop, hip-hop, indie, OST, R&B, and more. They also complement RADAR Korea, a playlist uncovering fresh K-music finds and a part of Spotify’s global emerging artist program. The hub is localized in over 72 countries, including Russia, India, Brazil, and the UAE. Plus, stream Spotify across a wide range of devices and app integrations, including Instagram, Facebook, Samsung mobile and TV, LG TV, Microsoft Xbox, Bose, and more.

To enjoy music the way you want it, download the Spotify app today via the Android or iOS app store or by heading to www.spotify.com/kr-ko/. For those in Korea, the Spotify app is available to download for both Premium Individual and Duo plans. Question is: korean charts and shows can let Spotify be part of digital points or not? Spotify will be make an awards shows with Daesang including for make more lucrative the korean advance?

Yes, it possible for Spotfiy to be part of shows. However as of right now, there hasn't been any announcement about Spotify being part of the digital points for shows yet.

Honestly I don't see Spotify making their own award show for Korea. They don't do it for other countries either. .

I think it will depend on Gaon, whether they include Spotify or not. I don't even know if they include apple music.

Gaon doesn't count Apple Music and the korean catalogue is limited so Apple Music is for niche of korean fans of international music

A lot of experts consider Apple Music floped in SK

I wonder how it'll affect the digital market in SK or if it'll count for music shows. Melon has already lost a lot of users so I wonder if they'll lose even more to spotify. So far KakaoM artists aren't gonna be in Spotify though.

Spotify Officially Launches Service In Korea

Spotify is now available in Korea!

On February 1, the app launched on both Google Play Store and Apple App Store, successfully opening up the database of 60,000 songs and 4 billion playlists to users in Korea. Some of its services include a personalized curating service and the option to enjoy music while being active on other platforms like Instagram and Facebook as well as on devices like LG TV, Microsoft Xbox, and more.

Spotify’s music editor team also revealed unique playlists for Korea. The team continually updates their playlists based on their study of all the playlists created by their 320 million users. As mentioned, Spotify is a frontrunner in recommending music to users on a personalized basis. Some of these playlists include “Daily Mix,” a daily mix of one’s usual favorites and new music, “New Weekly Recommendations,” a playlist that reflects one’s usual music taste updated every Monday, and “Release Radar,” a playlist that recommends new music that might fit one’s preference that updates every Friday.

One thing to note is that music distributed by KakaoM will not be available on Spotify. As the distributing company houses four labels and artists such as IU, this is a great disadvantage to Spotify. KakaoM’s share of music distribution reached 37.5 percent as of last year.

How well Spotify secures music content is a key factor of its competitiveness in the domestic market. Therefore, it is expected that much attention will be paid to how well Spotify secures music contracts. Especially with relationships already established between KakaoM and Melon as well as CJ and Genie Music, it is unclear whether Spotify will be able to acquire music smoothly. In the case of Apple Music, it entered the Korean market in 2016 but failed to make an initial hit due to difficulties in securing domestic music and has shown a low market share ever since.

Park Sang Wook, the managing director of the Korea branch, stated, “We have been working together with artists, labels, and distributing companies to provide a quality of service that will satisfy domestic users and artists.” He also emphasized that efforts will be made to further Korea’s music industry.

Alex Norstrom, Spotify’s Chief Premium Business Officer, said, “We are very happy to announce the official launch that has been long awaited by Korea’s music fans and artists. We will help more Korean artists connect with fans not only in Korea but also around the world. We will work with other players in the industry to provide an excellent music experience for users in Korea.”
