June 2018 - The Gatebox is similar to Amazon's Echo — it's a voice-powered home assistant. Created by Japanese company, Vinclu, Gatebox can automate your home in various ways, including turning on lights and waking you up in the morning. It's about the size of an 8-inch by 11-inch piece of paper.The device is intended to be "big enough for you to be able to put right beside you." The actual point is the virtual character that "lives" inside of it. Her name is Azuma Hikari, and she's the star of the Gatebox. Beyond being your personal assistant, she's intended to be a companion of sorts. The tone of the character is intentionally conversational. Azuma is your friend, not just your assistant. Azuma's essentially an endlessly friendly, nonsexual life partner. "The reason why we [developed] Gatebox is not because we are just pursuing entertainment or convenience. We want the characters [to] be naturally in our daily lives and spend relaxing [times] with us. 'I want to live with my favorite character.' We dreamed of such [a] world and we started this project." Rather than simply automating stuff in your home, Gatebox aims to fill your home with virtual characters. That's a lot of virtual characters! But then again, who doesn't want a fish eating potato chips flying through their living room? [cr.] October 11, 2019 - Gatebox Inc. officially released the Gatebox mass production model , a character summoning device which lets users live with their favorite characters. Gatebox has also announced a new “character platform framework” which will enable users to live with a wide variety of characters on Gatebox. As Gatebox worked to develop a product to achieve a vision of “Living with Characters,” the company received enthusiastic requests from many fans who want to be able to live with their favorite characters. Gatebox announced that they are making the Gatebox character summoning device a “character platform” that will feature a wide variety of summonable characters to make their fans’ dreams a reality. As the initial phase of content for the character platform, will begin distribution of Azuma Hikari and Gatebox Video. To enable third party developers to distribute applications on Gatebox, an Gatebox App Market will open this winter.
