The songs that opened up the 3rd generation idols are unquestionable...

The-songs-that-opened-up-the-3rd-generat

EXO – Growl

TWICE – Cheer Up

Idol history shifted from the 2nd generation to the 3rd generation when those two songs made big hits as representatives of male and female idols

original post: theqoo

1. I agree

2. Even if you don’t know the EXO members, you know Growl ㅋㅋ

3. These two songs really make me feel that way

4. I’m not sure about TWICE’s Cheer Up and I agree with Growl

5. Was there a 3rd generation hit song before TWICE’s Cheer Up?

6. Why TWICE…? In addition to that hit song, GFriend, Red Velvet, and Mamamoo were so successful in 2014-2015

7. Even if you don’t know EXO, you know some parts of Growl’s choreography

8. You don’t know Cheer Up?ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ Cheer Up is even more popular than Growl

9. Cheer Up was crazy

10. Cheer Up is a song that even fathers who don’t know much about idols know

Surprised some people in the comments are doubting cheer up when it's probably the biggest gg hit of the past decade in Korea.

I agree with Growl and Cheer Up "opening" the 3rd gen because after these 2 songs 3rd gen groups started to overpower most 2nd gen groups. Other honorable mentions that were released even before Cheer Up and were pretty big too:

RV - Ice cream cake and Dumb Dumb

Mamamoo - Um Oh Ah Yeah and You're the best

Winner - Empty

iKON - My type

GFriend - Glass Bead, Me gustas tu and Rough

You're The Best was bigger. It came out 2 months before Cheer Up.

I was gonna include it but I wasn't completely sure of when it came out but yeah, I agree it was much bigger.

Songs like me gustas tu, rough, you're the best, etc were really big too and they came before Cheer Up but still, Cheer Up is considered like the Gee of the past decade and I think maybe only D4 from Blackpink come close? Idk, but I'm surprised at some knetz doubting about their popularity.

I wouldn't say open up for cheer up but def defined 3rd gen

I think that must be why ppl question it bc it came 4 yrs into gen 3 but if you compare precursor gg songs cheer up >>>>>>>> i think.  Id even think of cheer up before growl.

I think the fact that they came before Cheer Up only shows Cheer Up's impact. I remember it was a close battle for SOTY between Rough and Cheer Up, but Cheer Up was released later and still raked up the most downloads and SOTY.

I think D4 would be a contender but it came pretty late/well into the third gen so I wouldn't say it opened up the 3rd gen.

I stand Twice and was deep into Kpop when Cheer Up was released and I remember how humongous its impact was, it's crazy - that's why I'm shocked at Knetz not bring sure about it lol.

^^^ same goes for D4, Cheer Up was a bit late but I just can't think of anything as big as CU that came before CU.

Agree.

Base on hit songs there wasn't many 3rd gen GGs I can think of with hits around 2012-2013

Therefor Exo's Growl is it. (and second perhaps Bap's Oneshot within the kpop community only...)

IF we go into 2014 - AOA would be the best representative for 3rd gen GGs. They had popular songs like Miniskirt, Short hair and Like a Cat (Heart Attack followed in 2015)

One hit Exid also had Up & Down

What song will be the Growl/Cheer Up of 4th gen?

Maybe in 2022 will be know

For ggs there's already a few "iconic" songs:

G-idle - Latata, Hann, Lion, Dumdi Dumdi

Iz*one - La vie en rose, Fiesta

Itzy - Dalla Dalla, Wannabe

None of them obviously had the huge impact of Cheer Up but they were pretty big.

For bgs, so far only the boyz (if we consider them 4th gen) and TxT chart decently but none of their songs have been a smash hit yet. The closest to a 4th gen bg hit is probably X1's Flash or TxT's Run Away.

seems pretty accurate even tho EXO was pulling crazy album sales they still lacked a recognized bop while Cheer Up literally was the highest selling song of the year and easily put them on the throne that had been held for many many years by SNSD.

Adding on:

In 2015, for GGs popular songs consists of -

Lovelyz's Ah choo

Red Velvet's Ice Cream Cake and Dumb Dumb

Oh My Girl's Closer (with in the Kpop community only)

Known debuts (not hits) Twice's ooh aah, Gfriend's Glass bead, CLC's Pepe and OMG's Cupid

as of now there's no national hits from 4th gen so yes we have to wait imo

so not even dalla dalla is considered a national hit? because it was really big/viral in 2019 and had like nearly 1000M of digital points or something like that iirc

but Growl was/is their most recognized song! I mean, that changes depending on the crowd. Love Me Right, Miracles of December, Ko Ko Bop, Love Shot, etc. But I still think majority of the public know EXO because of Growl. It was and currently is still played everywhere for their appearances on shows, or just when someone does something smug on variety shows.

Hm... I don't know if I would put CLC there. Not many people know that song since it got overshadowed by the comebacks of Red Velvet, EXO, Miss A, Fiestar (who were rising at that time) Ga-in, etc, right before them or after them. Maybe internationally they fared better, but only by like... music video count, and that was expected since they're a cube group. But I would definitely say that even April's debut was more known to the public.

These are good additions.

EXO really played a huge role in the transition from 2nd gen to 3rd gen, because it's so hard to think of any other groups that played big role in 2012-2015 song wise.

But I would add Sistar's Touch My Body on the list.

That's exactly why I put "not hits". At the time, out of the girl groups that "debuted" that year CLC was one of the known ones in the kpop community. Despite their debut ended up being lackluster for some, CLC was still a highly expected girl group since they were from Cube. They had quite a few stans too. People thought they had potential. But welp...
