[Issue Focus] GOT7, SISTAR, 4minutes... Idols can't go over 7 years,'WHY?'

Group GOT7 eventually scatters. As the'transfer theory' became a reality, it was virtually dismantled.

GOT7 was overwhelmed by the rumors of transfer and dissolution as reports of individual members' separation from their agency began in December last year. On the 10th, the transfer of all of the 7 members and a detailed report on their future moves attracted the attention of netizens.

◆ Members scattered, virtually dismantled (?)

At the end of last year, there was news that Jinyoung, who is also active as an actor, was connected to BH Entertainment without renewing the contract. The news that Yugyeom's hip-hop label AOMG and Youngjae received a love call from the sublime artist agency have already been predicted.

The concerns of these fans became a reality, and '2021 Golden Disk' on the stage on the 10th became the last schedule of GOT7. As GOT7 members agreed not to sign a renewal, their interest in their future moves is also increasing.

Jinyoung, who has established himself as an actor through several works, is expected to start a full-fledged move as an actor, and if Yugyeom joins AOMG, who is growing in size by recruiting Lee Lee and others, it is expected to show hip-hop-based music as a solo artist. . Leader JB is also preparing for a new start as many agencies are sending love calls.

Jackson is expected to engage in global activities through his global label 'Team Wang', and BamBam will also be active in Thailand and Korea at the same time. It is said that Mark will return to the United States, where his family is, and spend some time.

JYP Entertainment said, “On January 19th, we had an in-depth discussion with the members ahead of the expiration of the exclusive contract with the artist GOT7. As a result, both sides decided not to proceed with renewal of the contract under an agreement, wishing for a newer future.”

Since the seven members were scattered, the disorganization theory also floated on the surface. Accordingly, GOT7 members dismissed fans' concerns by directly leaving a message on social media. They posted the full picture on their social media and added the phrase “#GOT7 Forever”. “The last seven years have been the best of my life,” Mark tweeted. It's not the end, it's just the beginning,” he said. "The 7 of us will deliver the best version to you until the end." JB said on Instagram on the 11th, "Except for saying thank you to the girls (fandom)... thank you."

What is '7 Years Jinx' that GOT7 can't exceed? In July 2009, the Fair Trade Commission enacted the standard terms and conditions of a contract for exclusive use of celebrities, including that the exclusive contract between an entertainment agency and an actor cannot exceed 7 years.

Accordingly, at the time of renewal of the contract seven years after their debut, many groups were often scattered without surpassing the crisis, so nicknames such as '7 Years Jinx' and'Seven Years of Devil' were attached.

Girl group Sistar also announced its dissolution after 7 years of debut in 2017. As a group that disbanded after 7 years of debut, like SISTAR, 4Minute announced the team dissolution in June 2016 and decided to focus on each member's activities. There are 2NE1, which were disbanded in November 2010. In addition, in 2018, Fiesta and Tahiti were also dismantled within 7 years. Miss A, Secret, Children of the Empire, Infinite, Teen Top, B1A4, BAP, etc. also went through the steps of dismantling without surpassing Jinx for 7 years.

◆ To stop idol 7 year jinx… trust between artist and agency is important

Then, what method is needed to stop idol 7 year jinx? In the end, it is'trust'. Of course, this does not mean that GOT7 is leaving the agency because it cannot build trust with JYP Entertainment. If you want to focus on acting rather than singing, you can choose actor-centered enter, or you may want to leave the team because you want to walk a completely different path, such as MC and BJ.

However, there are also many teams that steadily go down the road with trust between members and trust with their agency. The longevity group myth is representative. In addition, BTS also signed a renewal contract with their management company 7 years ago. Apink has maintained the team for more than 10 years, maintaining a strong relationship between the agency and members. In particular, girl groups are more dependent on trends than boy groups, so their lifespan is shorter and there are relatively many discords between members, but Apink is considered an exemplary case as it maintains a lasting relationship beyond that.

Even if it is legally connected, the survival of the group, which has been active for 7 years, is possible because some fans have consistently loved it for 7 years. I hope that many domestic idols who can exceed 7 years jinx will come out so that the love of fans who have been together for 7 years is not in vain.

I mean, I guess after 7 years, due to fame or age, people get some self dignity and won't accept being treated like shit by companies who do the bare minimum at best. Unless they're making big money, which is pretty rare considering that any NCT member (a pretty popular group) is probaly making less than the girl serving pizza in my neighbourhood.
At least that's my take on it.

Idk how it is for Wayv but NCT member are definitely making a ton of money but i agree w/ the self worth part

after a few years of the drudgery i'm sure at least idols as successful as Got7 realize they dont necessarily need JYP ent to succeed as a whole. plus a bunch of em are popular on their own

Similar to how fans grow out of kpop/ music, I can imagine some groups don't want to continue the idol life all together. They pretty much train for years and debut with ridiculous schedules for years. It should not be too surprising when idol members want to explore other ventures and not stay as a group. Especially with groups where they have pretty popular members( SNSD, Got7 Infinite etc.), why not explore other areas? Some groups unfortunately  are placed in ridiculous situations where disbandment or leaving a company is necessary; can't really fault the idols for leaving at the point.

After 5-7 years sometimes each member have different expectations and goals for their future, which causes tension and disagreement. When an agreement can't be made, then all parties might eventually decides to go their separate ways.

7 years is almost  an entire decade of a person's youth. Not every person debuts thinking they want to be only active in a group for the rest of their careers  and/or youth. A lot people join the idol industry as a way to get their foot in the door for the entertainment industry in general. If the company can't give them what they want, then it's best to leave.

I feel it's a lot easier keeping groups longer if all the members genuinely like being on stage aad performing more than other areas of entertainment like acting, modeling, variety and etc. Of course, that does not mean individual members can not have an individual careers, it just means the group and fans comes first. Also it's important companies are able to meet their music needs and give them creatie freedom.

GOT7, Miss A, SISTAR, 2ne1 are groups that became really popular, used to promote a lot and had tours/worldwide tours. All of them have members that the company supported their solo projects while refusing solo projects for the others, since it was impossible to let all the members to have solo projects while the group was so active. After 7 years, the members started wondering if it was worth to stay attached to the group's schedule or going solo.

TV2Q, SuJu, 2PM, Shinnee, BTS are groups whose members want to be in the group and work for the group's success over their solo projects. They also have problems with their companies, they also feel like the company may give them more opportunities, but they've stayed in the company for over 7 years.

what's the BS? Am I lying?

Shinhwa, Beast, Block B all moved to the same company cause they wanted to keep the group active but they had disagreements with the labels that have debuted them. If GOT7 hadn't agree with JYPent, but they wanted to keep the group active, they should've moved to the same company or opened their own company, instead of doing this, they all moved to different companies what will make group's future activities really complicated, the same that has happened to 2AM whose members moved to different companies. I wish them the best, I'll keep supporting them, but be honest, do you think it'll be easy for them to continue with the group activities while being in different labels and not being linked to JYPent for these groups' promos?

I love how SISTAR has been the only group that had a proper closure. (2NE1 released Goodbye but we know that wasn't planned)

7 years is still a long period of time, with groups you have so much egos, plus you are put in a group, you didn't form it, so it's normal to go on different paths.

Of course its not easy and I'm not expecting regular promo's as a group but you made it sound like GOT7 put their individual interest first instead of their group and the way they left JYPE I think they are still group first as well. It took Shinhwa six years to get back together as a group, so already you are counting GOT7 out.  It's not easy starting a company and plus they still have to think about the other countries they will be active in as well, so maybe it's better to be with a company already establish to deal with Thailand and China, each group situation is not the same.

The way they are acting on SNS, I think they have something up their sleeves.

If JYPE really cared about group activities then they should have supported GOT7 and not block them from doing things as a group who blocks their own group from going on varieties, JYPE that's who.

Also, with 2am Jinwoon just got the military and now Seulong has to deal with his issue.

1st I don’t understand why many fans are so sensitive over the fact that artists may have preferred solo over group. GOT7 members know that in 2-3 years the Korean members will enlist and the group will be on hiatus.

I’m not counting GOT7 out, never. I’ve cheered for GOT7 a lot since their debut. I was sad, a little bit depressed after hearing the news cause somehow I thought they’d pull a 2PM.

For JYPent investors, the group is more important than the solo activities. Staying in a company means losing opportunities, honestly, there are many artists that I thought they’d be better (more money, freedom, popularity) out of their groups/company.

Shinhwa had a long legal battle for their name and rights. Jo Kwon promised a 2AM comeback in 2021. There’s any issue with Seulong, since people and the police understood he was not the culprit (http://netizenbuzz.blogspot.com/2020/08/im-seulong-apologizes-for-car-accident.html).

Anyway, I hope to see GOT7 soon on stage together. However, from what I’ve seen so far in KPOP, it’s hard to promote as a group once all the members have moved to different companies. 2AM members are all in different companies, and they’ve already said how difficult it is to match their schedule for a group comeback.

7 years is a long time and a lot of things can change. considering how many idols are wannabe-actors who got pushed into being idols by their agencies and the fact that idols are at the bottom of the entertainment industry ladder, it's no surprise that many idols want to leave after their contracts are up. likewise, idols are often uniquely restricted in terms of their musical creative freedom, so idols with a true passion for music often need to change companies to achieve that. add to that the inevitable interpersonal and company tensions and the relentless idol lifestyle, it's not surprising that most idols try to make a change after 7 years.
