The antis were generally more vicious too. Yunho received poison from an anti. And sasaengs would try to run TVXQ off the road and cause accidents. And fans of rival groups would beat each other up at concerts. It seems a little bit safer now. A little bit. 
 

EXO-L is the only fandom that comes close. The crazies were really awful, so were the sasaengs. ARMY are not as bad, the worst I’ve really seen is they can be bullies on social media but I have not heard of them being crazy in real life.

no we were not and it's not fair to say that without the whole story. at that time SNSD had been under attack by intl fans for years, every time a new girl group debuted it was "are they they new NGG? are they going to dethrone SNSD? i hope they surpass SNSD" and when Twice debuted with 9 members, that really exacerbated the issue. truth is, SONE fandom was very insecure and scared for the future of the group, understandably since at the time, there were noticeable problems in the group and lots of negativity even WITHIN the fandom, and people took advantage of that. Of course we weren't saints, there was an arrogance issue but I feel like the toxicity was an equal exchange from both ends. Kind of like ARMY vs. the rest of k-pop fandoms, though their situation was probably even worse.
