I remember BlackPink Jisoo's birthday support cost over 600M won (~550K USD)... Imagine receiving over 600M won worth of gifts just on your birthday I'm f*cking jealous
> Imagine the feeling of having over 30K people preparing a birthday gift for you

This isn't everything.. They prepare gifts that you can't even think ofㅋㅋㅋ  They also send you red ginseng packets for you to keep your health, if you're raising a pet, they'll send you dog food and stuff like that. Even gifts that are sent just as a joke, they still pick the most expensive and the best of them. They buy stuff you can put in your house like humidifier, candles, massage chairs, electronics like ipad, notebooks, cameras, phone case, also wine, chocolate, etc. they buy you even food... And they also give you makeup sets from Luxury brands like Dior and Chanel. They give you sunglasses, necklaces, bracelets, perfume, bags, fitness clothing like hoodies/coats, etc. The scale is freaking amazing

Don't you guys find the tribute culture so strange? Why would you give this to kids who earn good money..

No but they're always acting like ATMs but are the same ones asking "Do you only see your fans as money"

I know it's their money, and I get some gifts like fan letters, homemade stuff, or even stuff the idols might need...but 500k worth of gifts? Waht is even the point?

it's honestly just sad because the idols are already plenty wealthy and don't need or probably even want all those gifts and that money could do so much good if it went to people who actually needed it.

^^^ This. It's so excessive to the point that I don't see  the benefit? These idols are: 1) already rich, 2) probably own a lot of these lol, and also 3) now they have to buy an entire apartment for all this stuff because there's so much of it.

Idols are used to money (the popular ones receiving the mountains of gifts), so what's the point? Something handmade or a letter is more meaningful, and also, it makes me sad to see so much money being used when they don't need it....lots of people need the money:( Birthday projects that fundraise or do charity work in the name of their idols are so special and benefit society too.

Idk maybe I'm being stingy but this is so excessive It stresses me out just seeing all those gifts. Where will they even store it? Will they even use it?

do you know whati would love? all fanbases coming together for birthday, sending idol a one huge book of various letters and artwork

i would love that, and it wouldnt cover too many spaces lol, rest of the money can go to charity too

I mean, it's obvious the rich fans do it in order to get noticed. They hope that the more expensive gifts they give their fave, the more they will notice their worth (like, "we're in the same league, I'm rich too" kind of thinking). This shit will always happen because it's part of delusion culture too, just for the rich instead of the poor.

However, since this stuff will always happen, I at least wish idols could make donations out of all these things because they clearly receive so many smartphones and bags that not even their third grade cousins need them anymore. I hope they already do (and don't say it of course because they could never say they gave away the gifts) so that this stuff isn't completely wasted.

I believe I saw some fandoms do that and it's a cute and appropriate thing to do, I agree. Generally I wish idols themselves would promote investing money in charity under their name rather than just gifting them stuff they already have. Maybe companies end up using the gifts money and that's why they don't put a stop to it either but it's just so fucking sad because there is enough wealth to literally change people's lives here.

hm idols did ban gifts before tho, i guess bp didnt, but there is quite alot of groups that banned gifts and cakes o.o i guess this changes from company to company seeing this

overall, i definitely prefer tiny notebook idea, even if its harder to reach to idols rip

Honestly Asian fans are weird with those things. From collecting money to bulk buy albums, collecting money for birthday gifts to the fact that you aren't even considered a fan if you don't pay for a fan cafe. Imagine that those fans aren't always rich yet they spend serious amount of money for already rich people while taking money from themselves.

I've been stanning different western musicians hard for past 15 years and the only thing I did was birthday artwork books with people giving small amounts of money for a birthday cake for a celeb being a maximum.

Yeah, I know but really this money could have been waste on something better. That's why I think it's "unnecessary". Plus, we all know this away for solo & akgaes to flex who has a bigger fandom & who can give the most, lol.

I like when gifts are more meaningful. Lets be honest, Jennie can buy all the stuff she wants or even get it for free as part of promo deals. There is actually no reason to spend thousands on something like this. On the other hand I really loved the idea of photobook with pictures of sky fans prepared for their bias (I think it was Yoona of SNSD maybe?) since she love those.

Why give such lavish gifts to idols (Jennie and Joy) who are already rich enough to afford them and already probably own these items? I could never give something so expensive to someone I don't know much less a celebrity who can already afford it. Why not give to idols and groups who are struggling?

Idols, at least those from the big3 and certain more established ones, should flat out reject fan gifts right from debut. No offence but I think it's rather clear that a proportion of idols are also into enabling this kind of fangift culture, whether it's because there's some sort of underlying popularity competition they have within/ between groups, themselves having an inflated sense of self entitlement or just because everyone love free stuff isn't it?

I find this so unhealthy and unnecessary so companies should just flat out ban it right from the start. Idols already have a very complex and difficult relationship with materialism, as part of their job they are supposed to follow trends and dress glamorously but also throw in competition within/ between groups to see who shines the most, lack of financial literacy etc...it's honestly complicated.

I'll take EXO for example. Back then there was a scandal of Sehun/ Chanyeol trying to hint to fans to buy them Rolex via Instagram which to me is such disgusting behaviour. It's fairly obvious within EXO that there was a Rolex competition at that time, given that Baek has a super well-known algae constantly gifting him Rolexes and Baek will wear them, thus enabling that fan to buy more.

Or how about the well-known 'fashionista' Kai? Recently on I Live Alone he revealed that he never cuts off the labels of his clothes and of course he explained his rationale really nicely on TV, about how he loves fashion and how earning money is difficult for him so he really treasures them. I'm not denying that what he said might be true, but atm I'm ngl and say this behaviour can also indicate other things...he could be someone that sees clothes based on the price tag, or it could be that he never really felt comfortable parting such money but he has some sort of pressure to keep up with luxury goods or worst, I actually thought that he could be passing off his used items as new in the resale market.

I have derailed abit but all in all, companies should just ban this once and for all. Many idols are already knee deep in materialism and are very shallow, insecure and what not, we don't need the fangifts to complicate things.
